I'm a loser baby, so why don't you kill me?
WHO: Lancer, Rin, and Archer
WHERE: The MAC, specifically Rin's apartment. Then the Roof.
WHEN: Monday
WARNINGS: Rage, betrayal, fighting and death. FIND OUT WHO'S!
SUMMARY: After a brief recounting of the events that led to Rin's demise in New Vesuvius, Lancer departs to carry out his masters instructions: To protect her from the person responsible, her servant Archer. This is the perfect excuse for him give that stuck up Faker what he deserves.
FORMAT: Shirou in the bedroom.
[Even if Kirei hadn't ordered him to, Lancer would have still be B-lining it straight across town to see her. If what the phoney priest had said was correct, Rin, one of the only people in this city he could honestly say he had any fealty to, had died.
He didn't want to admit it, but the news had been devastating.
Ever since he had arrived in this city, the blustery little Magus had been there for him, admonishing him and supporting him in equal measure. While there were a few people in the city the lonesome warrior appreciated personally, Rin and he had history.
During the events of the Holy Grail War of "his" world, she had given him the one thing he craved since its beginning.
A truly noble death, for a noble cause.
A warrior like him had no need for something as gaudy as a "free wish". Especially when the only ones he held in his heart were worthwhile only if he could attain them himself. Honor and courage were not something that could be granted. They're nurtured and grown within one's self.
Even though Kirei had promised that she was alive and well, in a matter of speaking, and back in the city, Lancer had to see her to make sure for himself. Death, even temporary, is not a burden one carries lightly.
Archer, her servant, was reportedly the one responsible for her demise. Gross negligence or something to that effect. He and Lancer also had a history... One punctuated by Archer's repeated betrayals of his master. How they ever reconciled was beyond the straight forward knight. Normally Lancer would be content to ignore the loathsome creature who pretended to be a hero. Let him wallow in his self inflicted misery. But now... Now he had gone too far. There was no way Lancer could call himself a knight and let this disgrace go unanswered.
Taking him only minutes to cross the entirety of the city, Lancer found himself sailing down towards the MAC. For such an accomplished tracker, it was easy for the Hound to determine which dwelling was her's, her pleasant scent was distinctive to him and easily followed.
Briefly becoming ethereal, he slipped into her living room soundlessly. In his haste, he didn't even thing about showing up unannounced into the heart of her home would be rude.
He just had to see her. ]
Figures you'd be too stubborn to die. Let me guess, you berated the Reaper into submission?
[Chuckling, he shifted back into the material plane. However, while he teased her, his face was an open book. And his joy was clearly written across it.]

[ Rin hasn't had the opportunity to set up a boundary field for unwanted visitors yet; after all, the only other spirits there were ones she was allies with and therefore she had no reason to keep them out. Not yet, at least. Since Archer was incapable of turning into a spirit, as well as Saber, this left the one she didn't even think of right away to slip into her "home" easily and without notice.
Her reaction to this is hilarious and hostile as she flings an empty glass straight for the direction of his voice. It doesn't hit her right away that he's Lancer, no, she just hears someone talking to her casually. ]
Deviant! Pervert! Burglar!
no subject
Flailing back, Lancer stumbled back from the cloud of glass shards raining over face and crashed back onto the counter of her small kitchen, tipping over and shattering a rack of plates on the tiled floor.]
Ooowww! Stop! I am NOT a BURGLAR idiot!
no subject
Lancer, there's this thing they've invented so long ago that it had to exist during your time. It's called a door, you knock on it, and then you're allowed to come in without surprising your host unexpectedly.
[ At least she's still her "usual" self despite that. ] Hmph, what a mess.
no subject
Bushing a few shards from his shoulder, Lancer gives a hearty laugh as he regards her usual energetic form.]
Hahaha! I see you're as infallible as always. As for doors, they're only meant to keep the uninvited out. Surely your earlier welcome to your domicile is still open?
[Realizing his mistake, Lancer does feel kind of bad for barging in... but there's no way he'd admit that now. ]
no subject
Wait, don't answer that. ] Of course it's open, but I'm a young lady who lives alone. If anyone heard me shrieking in surprise, they would assume the worst. Oh well, it doesn't matter now.
[ In fact, she'll busy herself by leaning down to start scooping up pieces of plate with her bare hands. After gathering enough pieces, she'll chant a little under her breath and with a drop of her own blood (easily acquired since she's touching glass against her flesh), it'll form back into pristine condition. ]
What is it, Lancer? You wouldn't show up unless you had something to say. If you've come to scold me about dying, well, it didn't count. I was only out of it for a few seconds so that means it's not that real of a death.
no subject
--only to instantly reassess the situation at the sight of Lancer there. The casual concern on his face vanishes, swept underneath a cool mask. ]
I see, someone let a stray dog in. Rin, you should be more careful.
[ Even as he speaks, he's moving to interpose himself between Rin and Lancer.
And he hides the sudden upwelling of bitterness in his chest. He gives no hint that he can easily guess why Lancer is here. ]
no subject
That's it? All you have to say for yourself is dog jokes? Between you and Kotomine that schtick is starting to get old.
[He laughed. But it was a cold laugh, hollow and flat as he look on at his rival.
No, not a rival. That requires at least a modicum of respect.]
At least come up with some new material. If you're going to hide your cowardice behind a wit, at least lets be sharp about it.
no subject
Why are you here, Lancer?
[He knows. The bitterness in his eyes says that he knows.]
no subject
As if you don't know! The cute, 'I'm too young to know the difference' act you and the Priest are pulling isn't fooling anyone! The past tends to repeat itself and you are a living example of that.
[Reel it in a bit boy. Here isn't the place...
After taking a small breath, eyebrow twitching, he gestured to Rin with a sigh.]
It seems my master shares my opinion on the matter. He's ordered me to be Rin's new guardian and protector as you have twice now failed in that regard.
no subject
I don't recall giving up my place at her side. No, I think I reaffirmed it lately.
Have I failed her? Hmph, who knows--my sins are my own and not your business at all. I am Rin's Servant. I'm the one she summoned and the one she chose. Tuck your tail between your legs and go home, Lancer.
no subject
[ Rin's quick to leap into the fray herself, not so much physically as she does verbally. No, she keeps to her position near the floor, but watches Archer's back. He talks about being at her side, but here he is in-between her "guardian's" wishes and her own.
What a pain this was turning out to be.
Pushing herself up off the ground (leaving a few dishes unintended to), she walks right up to Archer's side in an attempt to pass him. She has to be the one to stand in-between these two, doesn't she? The wall that neither of them can break down, yes, that makes sense. ]
Archer's right--he's my Servant and the one I've chosen. Lancer, you can return home to your Master and inform him that Rin Tohsaka doesn't need him to fight any of her battles. I'm Archer's partner in everything, so it's alright if mistakes happen. I support every action he does as a Master should.
no subject
Not only that, he was being dismissed. For the first time in a while, Lancer didn't know what to say. His code still prevented him from ignoring Archer's actions... but Rin had just pardoned him fully.]
So he just keeps getting away with it? Time and time again he lets you down. You remember what he did to you right? How he left you to be raped by that bastard whats his face? And now he gets you killed again and you wave it off?
No. [He waves his hand out to his side in a solid movement.] I can't accept that. This has to stop.
[Again to Archer]
I can no longer sit back and let you ruin Rin's life and then profess you care about her. Right now you may think you do, but in the future I've seen the real you. The part of yourself you try and hide from the rest of the world.
Today, that ends.
no subject
[ Archer glances back to give her a brilliant smile, just for her--though Lancer may catch the edges of it. ]
You don't need something as trivial as a protector--you need a partner. So--
[ He turns to face Lancer again, intending to make some dramatic pronouncement about how he needs to get lost.
And then Lancer speaks.
Archer stops. His eyes widen. What is Lancer saying? Just what did he do to Rin after betraying her? No. No, that's not possible. He'll go against Rin's wishes, he'll hurt her heart, but all that is only for her greater good, all that is just to separate the two of them and give her a better Servant in the end, really. He wouldn't let someone hurt her like that. He wouldn't truly put her life in danger in a world where it counts. ]
Don't throw around lies like that. Don't--
[ '--I've seen the real you.'
Stupid, he wants to say. There is no real him. There's only a great gaping empty space. But isn't that exactly what he tries to hide? Isn't that the one thing he doesn't want Rin, who treats him like a human being instead of the worthless void he really is, to find out?
He stands there, frozen in place. None of this can be true. Rin can't find out. What he has with her is too precious for his own falseness, his own worthlessness to threaten it. But if he really did that to her, then hasn't he already ruined it all?
(And he despises himself all the more for showing this face to Lancer, who is just the sort of real hero someone like Rin deserves.) ]
no subject
[ He's gone far, too far, judging from the fact she uses a cold tone to address him. Completely void of her usual fieriness, she stands there in shock that he would say that.
It can't be helped really. Lancer's the kind of person who has to lay everything out like that and rise to the challenge of being a hero. Really, he's more the kind of Servant she's always wanted. Both Saber and Lancer held themselves to the standards of knighthood with great honor, while Archer was more fit for a colder magus than herself. ]
I, I told you that, that, that... [ Speechless, she steps towards the one in blue in desperation, leaving Archer to stare at her back instead. ] Why? I thought that I, augh--this is really problematic.
[ Because now there's no going back. Archer knows what could have happened to her and that Lancer was the only one who thought to save her. Too many thoughts are swirling in her head and she's feeling the effects of vertigo to go along with it. Reaching out for the one in blue, she just wants to cling and shake him for unraveling all the work she's put in for the past few months since she's arrived in the City. ]
That really... happened, didn't it?
[ She whispers more to confirm it with him than to deny it. Not much is making sense to her right now, but something about the way he says it causes her to believe that maybe she didn't make it up.
That she didn't make Lancer up.
Does that make him someone she can rely on more than Archer?
Rin doesn't close the distance all that well as weakness paralyzes her in place. Desperation, fear, everything that she should have felt at dying rushes her at once now that a certain dam has been brought down. ]
I, Lancer, I... [ She's at lost for words which is never an ideal place for a magus to be. ]
no subject
[Concern overwhelms anger as Rin swoons. She really didn't seem well. Distracted from his conflict with Archer, his stance loosens up as he opens his arms to her --as if allow her close and catch her if she falls.]
What's wrong?
[Kotomine had said she wasn't well... Did this have something to do with her current behavior? If this was a side effect of death, Lancer wouldn't be surprised. Even as head strong as she was, Rin was so young.
But this seemed to be more than that. She was almost delirious. Confused even.
Maybe she really is sick? And this conflict may have over excited her, exacerbated her condition? A knot tightens in his stomach as he considers his fault in the matter.]
Rin, I'm... sorry. I didn't--
[Maybe he can steady her, give her a second to breath. Concerned that she might fall at any moment, he takes a step forward to embrace her.]
1/2
It's strange. He keeps feeling like he's lost something, like he's lost something really precious, but since when has he had anything to lose?
But Rin is in Lancer's arms, and it definitely feels like he's lost something. How stupid! How stupid of him, that it's only now that he looks back on the past eight months here in this City with Rin
and realizes
that he
was happy.
Still broken. Still full of self-loathing. Still empty, but sometimes Rin smiled for him. ]
I see.
[ His voice is flat and dead. ]
Enough. This is done.
[ And he moves forward, inhumanly fast, and lays one hand on Rin's shoulder. ]
Rin.
[ Why, right now, is he remembering the times she's kissed him? It's almost as if he wants to kiss her too. But she's in Lancer's arms, so he can't. ]
Rin, I--
[ His mouth forms words he doesn't say. Then his other hand comes down on her neck to neatly take her consciousness away. ]
no subject
Well, then, Lancer, you wanted to fight, right? Let's see who's more fit to be Rin Tohsaka's Servant.
[ He grins recklessly at the other Servant. He knows, they both know that there's no longer any question about that. Rin belongs with Lancer now. But Archer won't show such weakness as to give her up without a fight. Not in front of this hero in blue. ]
no subject
Or so he thought.
When Lancer realized he had knocked her out, he looked up at the man with eyes wide with disbelief and outrage. The corners of his mouth pulled down taut as he bared his teeth.]
What the hell did you do?!
[Hastily he checked her condition. Though he was quite sure she was fine, that didn't change the fact that he had just abused yet again. And so blatantly.]
You bastard...
[With the utmost care, he slide his hand around her and scooped the limp figure his arms. Casting a single venomous glance toward Archer, he turned and set her gently down on her couch.]
You must really be looking forward to chocking on your own blood.
[He casts a sidelong look at his nemesis before standing up abruptly and flicking his wrist.
Like a spark igniting gas in the air, a great red, fiery light flashes in his hands, cutting the space in front of Lancer like a glowing wound. From it he snags up his faithful spear of Assured Death Gae Bolg.]
no subject
She likes you, for some reason, and she loves me.
[ 'For some reason,' he does not add. He has to show smug confidence in front of Lancer. Even now. Especially now. ]
We're going to clash now, but she'd have probably tried to stop us and been hurt in the process. I kept that from happening. If you care for her, you should thank me.
[ And suddenly he's holding his twin blades. ]
I won't fight you in Rin's home, Lancer. I don't feel like cleaning up that kind of mess when this is over.
[ And he points one sword at the door. ]
no subject
[Cool as ice, Lancer stared him down without a trace of reservation. This was a long time coming.
Tension filled the air and the few seconds of inactivity between them seem to take hours as Lancer waited to see who would move first.
Archer was right, they couldn't fight here. But even the slight gesture of turning would open him for attack.
In the blink of an eye, Lancer leaped back, a small twitch of Archer's eyes was enough to know the first attack was on its way.
Without stopping, he faded out as he passed through the door, immediately crouching and becoming solid again outside the apartment
--Poised and ready to strike Archer as he followed. It was a simple move, nothing that would take down a fellow spirit. But it was a nice opening.
no subject
[That's all the reaction that comes from Archer at Lancer's disappearance through the door. In truth, he's reacting to Lancer's words from those long few seconds ago. It hurts more than it should to be told he doesn't care about Rin.
He dismisses that hurt. He's good at those dismissals.
Instead of letting his broken heart move him, he narrows his eyes at the door. He knows the moment he exits it, he'll be attacked. Lancer has the advantage here. But one thing is to his advantage, and oddly that is his own weakness. Lancer will expect him to pass through the door as a spirit. But he can't do that.
Instead, he kicks the door open and lashes out with his swords in the same moment, preparing to deflect the first blow with a combination of the door and the blades.
(He may not want the apartment to be messed up too badly, but he'll settle for ruining Rin's door.)]
no subject
[Indeed, when the door suddenly bowed and rocketed off it's hinges at Lancer, it completely caught him off guard.
To not be buried by it, Lancer drew a drew a quick X slash across the door with the tip of his spear, neatly cleaving the board into four equal pieces.
However, his stance tapped by that motion, he was unable to ambush the still solid Archer, who now had him at the disadvantage.]
HAA-!
[He exclaimed in equal parts surprise and amusement as he threw his spear up in a desperate block. Only his honed reflexes allowed him to pivot on his rear foot as their weapons clashed allowing him to swing out to the side.
If he hadn't, Archer would have bull rushed him to a wall completely sealing his movements.
But now they were on open ground. The advantage was evening. Now if only he could open up the distance... They were still too close for him to bring the full brunt of his weapon to bear.]
Nice try! Isn't this nostalgic?! [The butt of his spear swung up towards Archer's temple in an attempt to ward him off.]
no subject
[He jerked to the side to dodge the end of the lance that raced at his head, lashing out with one sword in the process--not at Lancer himself, but at the shaft of the spear, to try to knock it away and create an opening.]
I can't recall any nostalgia for such a worthless battle!
[Of course, he and Lancer were thinking of different fights...]
no subject
For a split second Lancer regarded him through the haze of light. He looked almost wounded by the comment. But then its gone, replaced by the same grim determination he had at its start.
For someone like Lancer, a fight was something of a celebration. Even with his most hated foes. It was the purest form of self expression and calling it worthless was like calling the participant worthless.]
Heh, your right.
[A quick swipe with both ends of the spear, left then the right, cut between them as weapons clashed.]
There's no enjoyment to be had in a battle with someone who's ashamed of their own name!
no subject
You're wrong.
no subject
It was immediately clear that Archer had a substantial advantage when it came to close quarters. In the last two fights with him, it had been on open terrain where the reach of his weapon and superior agility gave him the edge.
But now, his spear was almost as long as the hall was wide. In the flurry of blows that passed between them he had left several gouges, marks of his passing, all down the hall.
Clearly Archer had learned enough about Lancer's fighting style to take advantage of it. Pressure from Archer's advance kept him on the defensive and prevented him from leveling his spear.
For a moment he considered phasing away and trying to get on better ground.
No. He couldn't. Even a small withdrawal from Archer's advance would be like confirming his position. If he had any hopes of breaking through and getting his point across to the stubborn warrior, he had to stand toe to toe.
This was a battle of wills.
Unfortunately he almost immediately came to regret his decision as one blow from his spear went wide, sailing cleanly over the red warrior's head close enough to shave off the tips of a few platinum locks. Unable to fill the gap in his defense in time, Lancer worked his body like mad in a futile attempt to dodge the attacks. While mitigating some of the damage this way, he was still cut cleanly three times by the very edge of the weapons before he could bring his weapon back down.
Instead of trying to counter with a strike, he leveled it horizontally and tossed it forward as if bench pressing it away.
It was a ruse, a feint to collect Archer's guard low while he went high. Above the colliding weapons Lancer hopped and brought his forehead down in a sudden rush, aiming for Archer's face.]
no subject
That was why, as he pressed forward with his own blades out and flashing, he didn't understand what Lancer was trying to do. He saw the lance sail forward, and he quickly went to block it--
--only to find his vision exploding in red and black as Lancer's head collided with his.]
Ha--
[Blood in his mouth; he'd bitten his tongue. His whole jaw felt jarred. His nose wasn't actually broken, but it was bleeding a little.
The pain hardly got to him, but the sudden rush of disorientation and dizziness made him stagger for several seconds, trying to fix his swimming sight.]
...that's what your head is good for, huh...
no subject
However he was laughing as the rush of combat started to over take him.
As offensive as he was to Lancer, he had to admit Archer was one hell of a fighter. Every successful attack, no matter how minor, was to be savored.
Gently, he brings his hand up to his forehead and collects some of the blood left there by Archer, licking the tips of his fingers as he lowers it again.]
Damn, you have one hell of a hard head.
no subject
[Archer finally stilled himself, stopped swaying.]
Being soft would get me nowhere.
[And hadn't it gotten him nowhere? All these months here with Rin, adjusting to life with her, to having a home again, however temporary it was--in the end, it amounted to nothing. He'd committed unforgivable sins against her, and whatever they had could go nowhere.
The memory sent a fresh flood of despair through him, and that powered his movements as he lunged forward--
--and released the white blade into the air even as he struck at Lancer's chest with the black one. In the time Lancer would have to take to block the sword coming at him from the front, the other one be circling back to hit him from behind.]
So how are they getting to the roof? ^w^
[Suddenly changing his tactics, Lancer bellows as he dives back in to meet the charge.]
But a heart is a different story!
[The throw was cleanly dodged, the white blade sailing harmlessly by as Lancer collided with Archer's advance.
What was this look in Archer's eyes? As they faced off, Lancer could see, could feel the fury in the warrior's soul, but it seemed... distant. As if it wasn't being directed towards him. But rather, he was feeling the effects by proxy.
But who was he mad at? Was he lashing out at Lancer for exposing him to Rin? Or was he just a convenient target?
But Lancer didn't have time to sit and think on it as the blade to his back sailed in, zeroing in between his shoulder blades. In the close quarters, he had few options for countering this. Had he continued to withdraw he would have been sandwiched between attacks, trapping him. Giving up what little distance he'd earned had been a sacrifice, but it bought him a split second to shove off of Archer.
With serpentine grace, Lancer dipped suddenly, legs splitting to drop as he slid back away from his opponent as the blade slice cleanly past him over the top of his head.
A few blue hairs drifted past his face as he slowed to a stop but he was no worse for wear. He'd dodged the attack, but it leaves him relatively flat footed as he quickly made to right himself.]
Come on "hero". You can do better than that!
no subject
It was, as it had always been, directed at Archer himself.]
You're right. I can.
[And without any further speech, he swept one blade at the shaft of Lancer's spear to try to knock it off-balance. It was far too easy for him to try something like that in these close quarters, and he followed it up with a swift slice at Lancer's abdomen that would be likewise troublesome to dodge with so little distance between the two of them.
The narrow environment tilted the fight in Archer's favor.]
no subject
[Lancer clicked his tongue as Archer came in for another furious assault. Only the brief respite gathered from their recent impact kept him toe to toe. Dazzling swordplay pushed him back, making him work his spear this way and that to stunt the flurry of chops looking to take him apart.
Archer clearly wasn't pulling his punches either; one chop took Lancer's spear up high as another slid in while his defense angle was askew.]
HRUAAAH-!
[Clamping his teeth as the sting of the cut burned through his nerves. Only a quick twist of his abdomen to mitigate the force of the blow saved him from being completely eviscerated.
Burning up the rest of his retreat room, he flung himself back with all he could was the only way to peel himself from the sword sliding across his abdomen.
With a crash he smashed through something and landed hard at an awkward forty five degree angle from the ground. Taking a second to shake off the impact, he fully expected to have fallen into someone's apartment. But he certainly didn't expect to look up and see... stars?
With a sudden rush he sat up, eyes wide with the sudden realization that quickly turned into a snide grin. He had just broken through the door to the roof access!]
AaaaHAAAA!
[A quick somersault backwards set him back up on his feet as he kicked off and up the remaining stairs, surely dodging Archer's next attack as he landed gracefully on the far side of the roof.
Now things were going to get fun.]
no subject
Ha--!
[But those were stairs Lancer had just landed on. Too late, Archer realized that his opponent was now out of his grasp. He lunged after him all the same, only to find himself lashing out at an empty stairwell. Lancer had fled up the stairs to the roof.
With a small sigh, Archer righted the broken door. It would be easily enough fixed by him or Rin later; just a matter of restoring some hinges. For now...he made his way up the stairs in measured strides.
He lacked Lancer's extraordinary speed, especially now, when he could not waste prana on reinforcing his legs. It took a couple minutes before he emerged onto the roof, but when he did, his swords were held at the ready.]
I see, so you've got the advantage now, Lancer. All the same, let's end this.
