Joey nodded sheepishly, smiling at the pup's tail went all waggly and she (he?) leaned over to lick Mary's cheek again, craning out of Joey's arms for a second before just leaning back into his chest with a contented 'wuff' noise.

He held up one hand to the puppy, though really for Mary's benefit, and spelt out later?.

The puppy licked his nose again.
