Well it wasn't like Jon was surprised that Remus was there, or that he'd entertained the unrealistic notion of being able to dodge encounters actually (gasp) talking to people the whole night. His expression slipped into a smile that didn't quite meet his eyes.

"That's generous of you." He responded, putting a hand on Nico's shoulder, mentally calculating. Probably asking after Remus's family would be perceived as a threat. Asking after the weather would be dull and asking after the party itself... well, that seemed relatively benign.

"Was it a lot of effort, setting all of this up?"
