Dirty basements, dirty noise, Dirty places coming through

WHO: Jack Bauer and OPEN
WHERE: Superjail
WHEN: From Saturday evening through the week.
WARNINGS: Probably none.
SUMMARY: Jack Bauer has been arrested. Come visit him.
FORMAT: Paragraph.

The 'Superjail' had been opened specifically to hold prisoners too dangerous or resourceful for containment in ordinary facilities. Its past residents had included alien symbiotes, superhuman sociopaths, vampires. Jack Bauer's abilities hardly put him in the same category, but he was an Import and he was extremely dangerous in his own way. So once he was arrested by Nicholas Angel, the former police Captain and current shame of the force was incarcerated in the police's own facility under heavy guard, pending trial.

Jack had a lot of time alone with his thoughts. Those thoughts were mainly sad, weary, and frustrated. It was fitting in a way: his cell was only a few floors up from the lobby where he and Seras had confronted a Skrull imposter. That encounter had ended in the deaths of two officers sent by Jack's orders into a situation they couldn't handle. Like everything else he'd done, he stood by that decision. Like everything else he'd done, it still weighed on him. Here, the memories of his sins and failures were kept close to him in more ways than one.

The thought of escape hadn't been seriously considered yet. The jail didn't have the greatest track record, but it was still a world-class facility, more than adequate for holding a powerless and downcast former federal agent. Jack knew that if he was going to leave, it would have to be through outside help, and that step would have consequences he wasn't ready to invoke yet. He chafed at the inactivity of his cell, aching with the knowledge of everything he had left unfinished out there, threats looming on the horizon: Vulcanus, Skrull infiltration of the government, killers at large, attacks being planned. He was unable to do anything in here, and that was something he couldn't take even though he knew the City had many defenders- in many ways better defenders- still working outside.

Another reason escape wasn't an option was because on some level Jack knew he belonged here, that this was what he had earned. He had broken his word, set himself above ordinary accountability, hurt a hell of a lot of people. He had changed so far and so fast, since he was Ported in retired and unwilling to return to a life of secrets and bloodshed. The happy life he'd left behind was a thing of the past by now, abandoned bit by bit in the name of necessity. Worst of all for him, more often than not his measures had failed to stem the danger and death the City was so often afflicted by. These were the things Jack brooded over alone in his cell, a busted ex-cop awaiting trial.

"Hn, I suppose there's a fair bit more digging to come," he decides unenthusiastically. This was all bullshit and he only wished there was a way of conveying his opinion- the right opinion- to everyone else. "I'm not happy with Mitch for this."

"And I have no interest in revealing the extent of how we got to know each other." Geddoe's good eye twitched, his expression hovering somewhere between humor and dread sarcasm. "I don't care what people think of me, but I value my freedom. I don't know how much protection my new employer would offer should unfriendly eyes be cast my way."
trueltning_fury: (by the way)

Geddoe smirked back. "I don't doubt it. Even if they care about your human rights here and won't torture you."

He idly scratched the back of his neck. "It's work," he admitted. "I'm not entirely thrilled with the men on my team, they make me miss the 12th more than I expected. But so far I haven't been asked to do anything too distasteful. To be honest, I didn't actually need the money. I was just bored."

James can only offer up a heavy shrug.

"It's the choice of lawyer I have the main problems with. If he's not careful, his little redemption speech is going to bite him on the arse sooner rather than later. Funny how he can give mass murderers, psychotics and sadists a second chance at the bat of an eyelid, and yet be so quick to get you in here."

Ugh...

Jaime shook his head, shifting his weight and exhaling heavily. He didn't know much about trials and...and all those goings-on, but sometimes they lasted for months, didn't they? Months of this?

"I don't really know how to feel about all this," he admitted, looking back at Jack. "Like...I don't know. We're supposed to put other people in here." Not you. Because you're not supposed to be one of the other people.

"We need to discuss Import law. You've done nothing that the situation hasn't asked from you. It's bull crap that you took the call of duty seriously and you're the one behind bars." Callie shrugged, her body relaxing a bit. "Something along those lines." She pulled up closer to the bars.

"... What about the CPD? You know your boys better than me. Do you want me to keep an eye on them? Seras is going to flip if she hasn't already."

Tonks approaches the jail cell door. The expression on her face is mostly neutral. The only exception is a slight frown that tugs at the corners of her lips. She doesn't like this. It's not right.

"Wotcher Jack."

She could break him out. She has her wand on her. It wouldn't be completely easy but neither would it be difficult. It would just be a fight. Tonks could do it.

"How have they been treating you?"

You're a good man.

[He raises his voice as he says the words, willing the strength in his voice to aid in the strength of his limbs.]

But these are things that happen to all good men.

"I know. It doesn't mean we have to just lay back and let them railroad you though. We'll get you a good lawyer and we'll fight this." And if they do convict Jack, well a breakout would be back on the table. "I'm not going to let them take you away."

Those last words might have come out sounding a bit more possessive than she'd be willing to admit.

Jaime's exhale was peppered with a rueful laughing sound as he shook his head. Ah, jeez...

"A bunch of that work's got a lotta you telling me where the heck to go," he pointed out, his mouth quirking on one side. "And I guess that's not really going to sparkle too much in the face of that big pile of crap piling up, but..."

But it did color his own opinion, for whatever that was worth. Disappointed, yeah...yeah, probably. But betrayed? Jaime hadn't gotten to that. He probably wouldn't.

"Uh, well," he shifted his weight again, unfolding his arms. "You know I'm not going to be too much help with all this--" his fingers wiggled, "--court stuff."

He let his hands drop after another shrug. "I mean, I don't know how sleazy or not the system is here..." His tone got briefly wry. "On account of half the guys who need to filter through bust out of jail before there's an outcome." A shrug.

"But I'm sure I'm not the only one hoping for the best."
