[ terry had left the envelope on the kitchen table unopened.
in the blur of the past several weeks, he'd almost forgotten that applying to college was something he'd finally gotten around to doing. it hadn't been easy. the process had been surprisingly personal, and complicated for an adolescent import. there were blanks for your parents names, essays asking for your personal story -- all things he could have gone without explaining to people that were just going to judge and compare. after he'd finally pressed send, the chance of anything coming out of it seemed unlikely anyway. and unimportant, maybe, once carrie had gone again. he'd even convinced himself he didn't really care anymore.
but when the envelope came, he couldn't bring himself to open it. something about the possibility of rejection made his stomach turn. so he'd left it and crawled into bed instead, transforming into a miserable lump of teenage anxiety under the blankets. somewhere along the way, a handful of the household animals had come to join him, adding a layer of fur and paws to the pile on his bed. ]
