DUEL MONSTERS TOURNAMENT ♠ ROUND 1

WHEN: Saturday March, 20th early afternoon

SUMMARY: Round 1 of the duel monster's tournament.
FORMAT: Whatever you want!

Months of planning and recreating an empire from the ground up was finally reaching its climax. Fireworks shot into the sky as the workers ran out of the way trying to avoid the large screen to which the firework stands were attached. If there was still anyone who had not heard that a Duel Monsters Tournament was being held in the city, the sights and sounds quickly informed them.

The same set up was found in the two locations. One at the center of Central Park and the other stretched next to the water by the harbor. The rules the duelists had been given told them where to meet and when to be sure they would be there for the beginning. Since Kaiba couldn’t be in two places at once, especially as he had his own duel to prepare for, a video had been pre-recorded to start the event. The screens turned on at the same time, the KaibaCorp logo flashing across the screen. It disappears to show a montage of duels fought by different monsters. Those who are paying close attention may even notice cards that Kaiba could have only found out about in the City. The montage ends with a Blue Eyes White Dragon destroying everything in its path and causing the screen to fade to white.

The blank screen suddenly changes again to a video of Kaiba. “Welcome to this City’s first chance at a Duel Monster’s Tournament!” it started. “You have had plenty of time to prepare, and now it’s time to show exactly what you can do. At the end of this announcement the tournament will officially start.

“Find your opponent and duel! The winner will go on to the next round. The loser can go home. You have all been given copies of the rules. Any cheating will be punished.”

The Kaiba in the video paused, emphasing a big-brother idea about how cheating would be caught and punished. The look changed into a smirk as he threw his hand forward and dramatically proclaimed,

“Game Start!”

"End turn."

"Draw." Before even looking at the card, Alastair tapped the button on his duel disk's unusual face. "First I activate my Backfire trap. From now on, every time you destroy one of my Fire monsters, you take 500 damage." Oh, he had so been waiting for that. He glanced at the card in his hand, and blinked. He had forgotten he had this one. "This goes face-down, and I remove Flame Spirit Ignis from play to summon Inferno, in defense mode."

The monster popped out of his graveyard, and he slipped it into his back pocket. Back to four monsters, though one was Dark and not Fire. He still couldn't attack, so he had to, "...end turn."

"Draw." Kiryu's expression fall as soon as he checked. Another trap he couldn't use. And he already had three traps on the field; placing another that wasn't likely to go away wasn't the best idea.

He paused, going over his other cards in his mind. he could still hold on to this... "And I end my turn."

Alastair hesitated before drawing. He left a card in his hand, and didn't attack Science Soldier.

"Hey. Kyosuke." His duel-disk arm lowered slowly. "Are you really giving me everything you've got? I could win on this next turn, you know."

Kiryu had to smile at that, but it was one of his nastier ones that he usually saved for his ex-teammates. "I never hold back. Try it."

That was more like it. "All right then. My move."

He didn't need to activate the trap, now that Kiryu was holding a card. "Gorlag, attack that Infernity Guardian!"

Kiryu braced himself and took the 800 damage, only looking vaguely annoyed at losing life points. They had to go for this to work.

"Trap card, open! Rope of Life!" Kiryu slipped the card in his hand into the Graveyard. "When one of my monsters is destroyed, I can discard my hand to Special Summon it back from the Graveyard, and it gains 800 attack points."

Alastair made a similar face at being denied the chance to special summon that monster to his side of the field. Infernity Guardian was now as strong as his Gorlag - but stronger than Gaia Soul. "Smooth," he commented, regaining his smirk. "All right, then. I'll play the magic card Junk Dealer, to bring back a monster from my graveyard with half its original attack points. And I pick...Tenkabito Shien,' he declared proudly.

"So you stopped me this turn. Think you can get hold me off one more round?" he teased. He'd been behaving himself up till now, but there really wasn't anything stopping him from trash-talking. Even if he did like and respect Kiryu more than most people in the City. "I've got moves up my sleeve you've never even seen before."

Kiryu laughed again, drawing a little more dramatically than usual. "So do I. Draw!"

His eyes widened a little and he tried to keep his face as neutral as possible. He'd been needing this, but he couldn't summon it right now.

"Infernity Guardian attacks Science Soldier."

Oh, Alastair saw that. And did his best not to react, smoothly removing Science Soldier and dumping it in the graveyard. "No matter. He was in the way, anyway. Can't use Gorlag's effect if I've got no monster spaces left, after all." Pity it wasn't one turn sooner - he could have filled that spot with a second monster from Junk Dealer. But he was sitting fine. His strategy was still in place. It was still neck-in-neck, too.

Kiryu paused a moment before saying his turn was over. But there really wasn't much he could do to get his monster's effect working again...

"End turn."

"Draw!" Alastair was excited, sensing his chance to strike. He tucked the card into his hand and quickly arranged his moves in his mind before going to work. "You ready, Kyosuke? First, I switch Inferno into Attack mode. He's got a little extra something in the damage department when he hits, so hold on tight. Now - Gorlag, attack his Infernity Guardian!"

Kiryu hissed under his breath as his monster was destroyed and his lifepoints dropped again. Not by much, but any amount was too much.

Infernity Guardian reappeared out of the graveyard onto Alastair's side of the field, boosting Gorlag up to the maximum 3500 points. Not that it would matter...it looked like Alastair was about to win. He hesitated, but he had to call the order. "Inferno attack his life points directly! Then I'll offer Tenkabito Shien and Infernity Guardian to Gaia Soul, to make it worth four thousand attack points, and attack your life points again!"

Inferno's effect only worked on monsters, so it only attacked for 1100, but the following shot would end it - he had Kiryu in that one attack, unless he had another trap. Gaia Soul would be destroyed at the end of the turn, but if it was end-game, it was worth the sacrifice.

Unfortunately, neither trap Kiryu had down would help in this situation. He braced himself and bit his lip to keep from screaming in frustration as the attack hit. Sure, he'd lost to Rudger a few times in practice duels, but other than that, he didn't lose. He wouldn't have conquered Satellite if he'd ever lost...

His hand almost clenched, but he was still holding his Dark Tuner. His Dark Tuner that had gotten there twenty turns too late. It was times like this that he wished the darn thing was also an Infernity monster.

The field cleared, Gaia Soul exploded, and then the match was over. Alastair couldn't help but stare in a bit of astonishment...he'd won, yes, but he was expecting to have to fight tooth and nail for it. Winning was everything when your soul was at stake, but it had been two years - his deadlier instincts were gettign dull. After all, he thought he would be facing down a god. He cleared his duel disk of its cards and let the scythe-arm retract, ignoring the scattered applause from onlookers.

"Good fight, Kyosuke," he said sincerely, raising his head proudly. "No one except Kaiba himself has ever given me that good a match."

"Yeah." Kiryu gathered his cards and slipped them back into their case, also ignoring the applause. Knowing there were people around just made it worse.

"I wanted you to see him," he said softly. Then he laughed and dragged his hand through his hair and across his face. "I guess he didn't feel like it today."

Alastair crossed the field to make this discussion more private, even though they could converse in Japanese to the detriment of any onlookers.

"I wanted to face him," he admitted. "I wanted to see if I could hold my own against something that big. Like I used to. Or if I'm just some amateur now, without a special card to back me up." He breathed a bit of a sigh and smiled. "One thing's for sure. I didn't realize until right now how much I miss dueling."

He laughed again, grinning cheekily. "The whole point is that you can't, you know~ Or he wouldn't be a god." His expression faltered a little with that, but it was brief and he wasn't about to dwell on his doubts.

"We'll have to duel again. I can't believe we hadn't yet in the first place."

"All right, you got me there," Alastair chuckled. "But I've seen crazier things in my time." After all, he got to witness the pharaoh take down one of the Egyptian gods with just his magnet monsters. Anything was possible with higher stakes on the line.

"Yeah, we should," he agreed. "Maybe after the tournament is over, so it can be just for kicks. Which, you know," he added modestly with a flip of his hair, "could be Monday. My luck could run out a lot faster than I want." He reached out and gave his friend a playful rap on the shoulder. "Wanna go get something to eat? Or are you going to go smack down some newbie just because you can..."

"Heh, any newbie would be dead in a few minutes. I wouldn't be satisfied with that. Food sounds much better right now." His grin got a little bigger. "If you're paying."

Alastair grinned widely. "Oh, I think I can swing that. C'mon." He turned to sashay back over to his motorcycle. Screw walking, they could go anywhere today. On the way, he added over his shoulder, "so did I satisfy you~?"

Kiryu's expression turned bitter as he followed, tugging his cape off so it wouldn't be obnoxious latter. "You were closer than anyone else I've dueled."

Oops. Wrong topic. "Enough dueling talk for now," Alastair shrugged. "There'll be time for that later. Where do you want to go to eat?"
