Masks of all counterfeits paid tribute to the color spectrum that soon poured out into the confetti-strewn streets that morning. The flood of spectacle drowned away any groans of the mundane, and once ten o'clock stuck then did intrigue ascend to the hazy plateau of status quo. Bodies moved like whispers against each other, some seeking friends, while others hoped to fool foes. The air sung with sticky excitement: mischief was welcomed here, as long as you did it honestly. As long as you wore your face over your mask.

[Peter almost doesn't register the glimpse of wings at first, what with the number of people in masked and feathered finery, but when he does he saunters over, hands in his pockets and a smile on his lips.]

You look lovely tonight, Nill.

[She's busy inspecting a statue of a lion when she hears her name. Her wings flick and she turns, curious. It has to be someone she knows, since they've addressed her by name--

Nill takes a moment to recognize him, but his voice had helped. She grins, raising a hand in greeting. She hadn't known Peter had come along on the trip, but was glad to see him.]

[He waves back, then nods around at the festivities.] Nice party, huh? Seems like you're getting into the spirit of things. Me, well, I've been lazy.

[culver]

[She opens her mouth in a silent laugh, shaking her head. Nill gestures to him and nods: she thinks he looks nice! Besides, when it came to costuming, well. It was relatively easy to go as an angel because of her wings even if she knew it was boring.]

[He chuckles.] Well, thanks. That's nice of you to say.

Seen anyone else you know yet? I've only just started wandering around.

[Ha, nice of her to say. Peter, that's why she likes you.

She shakes her head. Since separating from Kate, she's been on her own. He's actually the first person she's run into, timelines be damned. The question is rebounded with a tilt of her head and brows slightly raised.]

What? Oh! Yeah, I've seen a couple people around -- but I'm not sure it counts when they're my roommates. Right?

[That makes her laugh silently, a slight shake going through her shoulders. She shakes her head; no, it doesn't really count!]

Well, in that case, that makes you number one! [He winks.]

[Oh Peter, you cad (not really). She nods, and gestures to him to reciprocate the sentiment.]

Guess there's only one thing to do then. [He offers her his arm.] Shall we dance? I promise I'll try really hard not to step on your toes.

[culver]

[Nill puts on a show of deciding whether or not she's going to say yes, folding her arms and tapping her chin. But of course the answer is yes! The blonde takes his arm with a smile. She's actually not a bad dancer, having taken lessons two years ago fro prom, so she feels pretty confident in her ability to dodge wayward stomping if she has to.]

Hey, you're pretty good at this. [Peter isn't as terrible as he was pretending, either. He's got a natural sense of grace and balance, it's more the self-consciousness that makes him falter sometimes.

Well, that and not knowing the steps.]

[Nill has the natural grace thing going on too, honestly. One of the perks of her avian DNA, apparently. And don't worry, she's kind of making up the steps as she goes--but isn't he supposed to be leading? Her thoughts are immediate, translated to his mind:]

[And now she really needs to hot-foot it if she wants to keep from getting stepped on, because he stumbles to a halt.]

Did you just -- was that you just talking in my head?!

[Oh no! She forgot that... not everybody knows about her power, oops. Her face turns scarlet, and she manages to dodge his stumbling. Nill panics for a moment, automatically thinking Yes which is immediately followed by Sorry before she forces herself to actually stop thinking and just nod. Her wings are pressed close to her back, eyes wide and apologetic.]

Whoa, whoa, whoa. [He lets her go and holds up his hands, waving them in presumably soothing motions.] It's okay, Nill, you just startled me. I had no idea you could do that, that's all. I'm not angry!

[Now she is kind of standing there on the dance floor, trying not to look awkward. She forgets about her power sometimes. She tries to smile, wings slowly extending to their normal resting position. Okay, this is fine, he's not mad. Nill lets out a slow breath and nods, acknowledging that he isn't.]

I didn't mean to scare you -- I hope I didn't scare you, anyway. You just took me by surprise. [He smiles, as reassuringly as he can.]

[Nill returns the smile, shaking her head. No, he hadn't really scared her. She doesn't think she could be scared of Peter even if she tried (not that she'd ever mention that, of course). Gently, she offers her hands forward again, head cocked to the side. Does he want to keep dancing?]

[He reaches out to take her hands in his:] Sure. Let's bring the house down, huh?

[culver]

[When she laughs this time, he'll hear it rolling through his head, not held back. Nill nods, not letting anything else slip through her mental barriers.]

[Any bystanders listening in may think he's laughing quietly all on his own, but they both know he's not.]
