here's my fist, where's the fight?
WHO: Kyouko Sakura (
seeksherownsalvation) and Kanaya Maryam (
glowsferatu)
WHERE: Downtown, by the High Line.
WHEN: Backdated to the night of February 13th.
WARNINGS: Violence between teenage girls.
SUMMARY: Kyouko succeeds in goading Kanaya into a fight.
FORMAT: Prose to start with.
The food court near the northern end of High Line Park is a medium-sized plaza partly penned in by a tall fence and covered on top by the underside of the elevated park itself. A more narrow walkway and stairs branch off the main body of the park and lead down to the ground level, providing some higher ground nearby. Not far away, buildings crowd in. In other words, it's a mix of moderately open spaces and obstructions: a good place for a mid-range fighter. Kyouko isn't always the sharpest tool in the shed, but when it comes to a fight, she knows what she's doing.
Right now she stands atop one of the picnic tables lined up on one side of the plaza, clad in jeans and a baggy sweatshirt, with no weapon in sight. There's a cocky grin on her face. Or at least, there's a cocky grin on her face when she's not too busy munching on the bag of chocolate-covered pretzel chips she holds in one hand. Either she doesn't take this very seriously, or she brings snacks to every fight.
Actually, it might be both.

Finally, Kyouko may notice a figure in the dark dropping off the wall nearby as the troll finally marches in, hands balled in fists at her side, head down, glaring ahead. She stops just inside the fence to look Kyouko in the eye, her lip curling slightly. She's got no use for words right now, the look says everything she needs it to.
no subject
"You took a while! Get lost or something on the way, or almost chicken out?" She pops the last of the chocolate-covered pretzels into her mouth and balls up the bag to toss it away. "Whatever. You ready now?"
no subject
And with that, she charges in. "Let's hope you've made similar use of your time!"
no subject
The distraction lasts a split-second only, because she knows Kanaya is coming at her. Even as it happens, Kyouko's leaping high into the air, one hand extended, the unassuming little ring on it now glowing. (The empty, crumpled bag starts to fall.) Red light sweeps over her, blasting away her clothes--mercifully not long enough for much to be seen before they're replaced by a rather more stylish scarlet ensemble and a long spear in her hand. (The balled-up bag hits the table and rolls off to drift to the ground.) She lands on the next table over, brandishing that spear against Kanaya's attack, lashing out to both counter it and knock her enemy away. (The bit of trash she really should have thrown out before hand reaches the ground and wobbles listlessly there as the fight begins above it.)
"I don't need to prepare. I'm always ready for a fight. That's how it is, being a magical girl."
no subject
Her charge stalls when she sees Kyouko move, but the transformation is too quick to take advantage of and now a spear's heading in her direction. She holds out her hand to the side and her own weapon suddenly fills it, seemingly from nowhere. There's no need to start the engine, she won't be cutting anything, just knocking the blade headed for her away.
"It certainly does nothing for your manners!" No sooner does she say it than she spreads her hands, pulling glowing green threads from the air, from the ground. She drops through the resulting portal, launching out behind her opponent and aiming a kick at her back.
no subject
The portal is something she isn't expecting. Her eyes widen as Kanaya disappears, and automatically she starts to whirl around in a circle, brandishing the spear to knock away anyone approaching from an unexpected direction. She nearly doesn't make it in time to avoid Kanaya's kick. But she catches a glimpse of the portal reappearing as she's spinning and hurls herself to the side. It's a rough, dirty motion, and she lands on her knees on the pavement, scraping them.
She doesn't seem to care about the actual damage, just about her pride. "What a low move! You just can't stay put, can you?" She hurls the spear again with little grace behind her movement, even as she rises back to her feet. This time, though, it doesn't go straight at Kanaya--it twists and splits into segments which aim to wrap around her.
no subject
She gives the cord a few tugs to rev the motor. If she can get the teeth spinning, it may dislodge or even tear through the chain.
no subject
"What d'you mean, you're not fond of it?" She jumps back to another picnic table to put some distance between herself and Kanaya, then stabs out with the spear again. "You oughta like your weapon even if it's way over-the-top!"
no subject
"I was talking," she begins as she sprints forward, hunched down to duck under the approaching spearhead, "about staying still!" Once she's darted close enough, she pulls back her fist and leaps for the tabletop, releasing the blow once she reaches Kyouko.
no subject
For a moment, she looks like she's considering it. Her grip tightens on the lance, and she starts to brace herself to lunge and meet her head-on. But at the last moment, she hesitates. The problem with a move like that is that if it connects, with Kanaya hurtling at her with no time to block, it'll do real injury. It might even kill--and Kyouko just doesn't have the killing impetus in her right now.
So she launches her counterattack a split-second too late, the spear wavering slightly in her hands, and by then Kanaya is upon her. That fist hits her with slightly less than its intended impact this way, but it's still enough to send her staggering back, holding up the spear to block any further attacks, looking vaguely dazed.
no subject
The spear is still an obstacle, grazing past her shoulder so the edges opens a wound. Nothing serious, she can push past the pain. She'll have to go around it in its current defensive configuration, dash to a new angle of approach. She strikes low, a quick jab aimed at Kyouko's ribs.
no subject
So she slumps slightly as if winded and needing to catch her breath, but in a split-second she hits back, sweeping the spear out hard with extraordinary strength to try to knock Kanaya right over.
no subject
She wasn't putting enough thought into the fight to even consider it might have been a feint, her lip is caught right on that hook. Everything powering her right now is adrenaline and fury, her only strategy is hit where there's an opening and keep hitting. It brings her charge to a dead stop as her legs fall out from under her and her chin scrapes against the ground, leaving a green streak.
It takes her a moment to recover, but she wastes no time trying to get to her feet again. She doesn't like being vulnerable, leaving such a window open to be attacked.
no subject
Kyouko bounces back from that miss, holding the spear across her body with both hands. "You even bleed in elegant colors, huh!"
no subject
"And just what is that supposed to mean?" she asks and she begins moving again, dashing about plaza in quick bursts, both to make herself a more difficult target and to find a good opening to attack.
no subject
"What d'you think it means?" Kyouko turns slowly as Kanaya moves, staying on the defensive for the moment as she tries to figure out what her opponent is doing. "You oughta be worn down! All messed up! That's what happens to someone who fights for justice and saves people!"
She waits until Kanaya has started another dash, and then, gritting her teeth, she makes her move: she calls up a barrier, a tall fence of tiny interlinked spears, right in Kanaya's path, hoping to daze her and open her to another attack.
"You're doing it wrong."
no subject
It works, for the most part, but when she dashes away from the barrier she seems slower, favoring one foot, teeth gritting every time it hits the ground.
"Who said anything about justice?" she shouts, and if she had the presence of mind to do so, she'd wonder what Terezi would think to see her now, thinking about vengeance again. That's what this was all about, wasn't it? No real lesson, she just wants to make Kyouko hurt because she'd hurt others. Because she was herself hurting. Terezi was gone again, and there's no one to tell Kanaya to stop that she'll actually listen to anymore. "I told you that being 'all messed up' isn't a condition I retain!"
She balls her fists and moves in Kyouko's direction. "Is that where your fears truly lie? Letting others be hurt because you may yourself be harmed in attempting to do anything for them? That anyone would be?" She zig-zags as she closes the distance, trying to disguise her real angle of approach, but it's less effective when she's not at full speed. She's still moving faster than most people ever could, but something in it feels lazier, hardly an impossible target.
"Maybe that's just a weakness on your own part!"
no subject
Maybe that's just a weakness on your own part.
It is, of course it is. That's what she's always known, isn't it? Girls like this Kanaya, like Mami, they can fight evil and aid justice without ever putting a curl on their head out of place, much less becoming responsible for the deaths of their entire families. But Kyouko can't be like them, so she has to give up entirely and be a villainous punk instead.
Staring at Kanaya rushing at her, Kyouko bites her lip. She always used to think like that: that she'd failed a beautiful dream of being a perfect magical girl. But the flat look in Kyubey's eyes as he told her the truth about Soul Gems haunts her now. What if there's no such thing as a perfect magical girl? What if it's actually kind of awful? What if that wasn't what she failed at all?
With Kanaya practically in breathing range, she snaps back into action.
"Maybe, or maybe I'm not the weak one at all!"
And this time, when she lunges forward with her spear flashing out before her hands, she puts all her strength into the blow.
no subject
The spear tears through her side, leaving a green spray in its wake. The most Kanaya's twisting did was further opening the wound, splitting it to the point where she passes around the spear's point as she collapses to the ground. Huddled on the ground with her fists balled, her teeth gritting, her eyes shut tight, trying to hold back the jade tears that the pain brings. Her whole body shakes.
She can't stay like this. She can't lose, she can't let the pain stop her. The blood is still pouring down from the severe split in her midsection as she fights her way back to her feet, but the furthest she makes is her knees, fists against the granite to hold her steady.
This one won't heal on its own, not quickly.
no subject
"Hey..." Her voice is a little raspy; her eyes are wide. "Get up, will you? If you don't get up that means I win."
It's upsetting for her, to see this lovely girl's blood all over the pavement. Of course, she put it there, but she's never had the wisest judgment, really.
That's why she continues like that. "Don't you know? Villains aren't supposed to win."
no subject
"You...haven't..." She spits her words through gritted teeth, words from a week, rasping voice. She takes a deep breath to gather it again, her lips curling into a mad smile. "You haven't won yet."
She can feel her the flesh and gristle try to stitch itself back together, but it doesn't have the energy it needs, there's not enough power. It needs blood, and she knows just where she intends to get it. Slowly, menacingly, she staggers her way toward Kyouko again.
no subject
"What's wrong, huh?" She doesn't move. She doesn't go to attack again. But she tenses and draws herself into a defensive position. "You look a lot less elegant now!"
And she springs forward out of that defensive position, launching herself once more at Kanaya. But even though she's remembered her place as a villain, the fire that sent her attacking Kanaya with full force before is gone. The swipe she aims at the troll now with her spear is much less vicious, and possible to dodge even with Kanaya in her current state.
no subject
"Elegance...was never...my intention!" she shouts as she sidesteps the spear. Twisting to the side in the process proves to be a mistake, as the difference in direction between her torso and her legs disagrees at the waist, tearing open the small efforts already made to close her wound. The pain travels throughout the right side of her body, and despite her determination to push past it, her hand is a numb mass of pins as it grips the shaft of the weapon extending in front of her with no strength behind it. She compensates by bringing in the left to assist it.
The feeling passes quickly, but as her body overclocks itself to keep her going, the hunger only quickens. Tightening her grip on the spear, she pulls it toward her, hoping to bring its owner with it.
no subject
Instead, she lets herself be dragged, and only as she approaches does she finally let go of the spear. Instead of backing away to a safe distance where she can use her mid-range attacks again, she does something reckless, as per the usual.
She tightens one hand into a fist and hurls it at Kanaya's face.
no subject
She twists back with the hit, but catches herself with a foot on the good side, the one that isn't throbbing in pain. A hiss rattles through her throat, as she snaps back toward Kyouko, her hands shooting for the upper arms of her opponent as she opens her mouth wide, fangs aimed at her neck.
no subject
Anything but an open, fanged mouth coming at her neck as hands clamp down on her upper arms.
She stands there in shock. She barely even feels the pain as the teeth sink into her flesh--why should she, anyway, with this body? She just doesn't understand why Kanaya is doing this.
Vampires are bad guys, and Kanaya is clearly a good guy.
no subject
She feels like a new troll again, never so alive as when she revels in her undeath. She's never fooled herself about being a monster, it's just how she directs it that has always been her main priority. It's the stopping that's the hard part, burying the hunger again once it's been set loose. There's always that temptation to keep going, to drain the victim of life until she's taken it all in.
She's fought Kyouko enough, right now she doesn't feel strong enough to fight herself.
no subject
She won't be weak. She won't lose.
"Get back!"
Spears spring up out of the ground between the two of them to fling Kanaya away from her.
no subject
Her eyes are wide and pinned, the look in them wild and mad above with her bloody-toothed snarl. The light she's giving off is the brightest it's yet been, but concentrated and intense, not extending far beyond the edge of her skin. There's no elegance anymore. Her wounds have all healed, but she looks more animalistic, more monstrous.
The only thing keeping her from pouncing in renewed attack is the barrier between them, she's lost herself too much in instinct to even think about using a portal.
no subject
Actually, it's gotten to be more like fighting a witch. And she doesn't want that. Kyouko doesn't want to see Kanaya turn into something like that because of a fight.
"What the heck are you doing, Kanaya?" she demands from behind the barrier, clutching tight to her spear now. "You gotta snap out of this. It's no fair fight if you're just standing there snarling!"
no subject
And then she springs forward, the chainsaw appearing in her hand and roaring to life and she strikes the barrier with it again and again, trying to tear apart the spears that make it up individually if she has to.
no subject
The barrier of spears shatters, and she has no more time to lament. She has to fight.
Kyouko lets fly with the spear again; it separates into segments and flies out to try to wrap around the chainsaw, intending to disable it.
no subject
The weapon is wrenched from Kanaya's hands, and she lets it go. It shattered the barrier already, serving the purposes she had meant for it. It flies across the plaza, embedding its blade into on of the support beams, engine stalling as the teeth try and fail to tear themselves free.
Kanaya then uses her now empty hands to duck into a handplant, flipping into a kick launched toward Kyouko's chest.
no subject
The impact jars her, and the spear she'd just summoned back to her goes flying. It crashes into the support opposite the one the chainsaw landed in, and the platform above the food court cracks and creaks alarmingly overhead.
no subject
The creaking only worsens into a groan overhead as the two pillars start leaning against their own wounds.
no subject
--and that's the last push the platform above needed. With the spear wrenched out of one support, the whole thing sags alarmingly for two seconds, tilts for one and a half, and then comes crashing down onto the food court.
no subject
She will think all of this, but not yet. For now, she'll be too busy getting caught under the rubble of the falling High Line.
no subject
She turns and looks back at the falling debris. Kanaya's still there. Should she let her be hurt? A pang of guilt seizes her. But taking care of herself is what she does, isn't it? She has to run.
Never mind that she wouldn't have bothered to "take care of herself" if the platform hadn't fallen. Never mind that she would have simply let herself go down fighting a monster.
Kyouko runs.
no subject
There are sirens moving in her direction. She'll take care of Kyouko later. ...Some time. Hopefully something will have been learned from this other than just how crazy Kanaya herself is, though there's little confidence that this lesson really served any ultimate purpose.
Kanaya pulls in her glow and disappears into the night. This whole thing has just been a mess, and she has an arm to attend to.
