[ kanaya could've taken lunch at the office, but all she wanted to do now is get away from it, find some room to breathe. she hasn't managed to thread a stitch in days, it's all been balancing the books since the last issue went to print. honestly, she shouldn't even be using money for food to begin with, but looking and realizing that she's the only one in an otherwise empty office just made it all sink in.

that she ends up at the pie hole really isn't any kind of accident. there's a nagging feeling in the back of her head as she rolls over a few ideas. but she can't jump to any conclusions, she can take anything for granted, she's supposed to make everything work. that's her job.

she looks around a little awkwardly once she walks through the door, eventually ducking into the first available table and just slumping down on the bench with a heavy sigh. ]

[catmask]

[ Kanaya doesn't sit for long. As if it had been planned, Carrie slides into the seat across from her just a couple seconds later, casual and the picture of belonging exactly where she is. ]

Long day? [ She doesn't actually look up as she asks it, this soda in front of her has snagged all of her attention. ]

[glowsferatu]

[ kanaya looks up with some surprise. she hadn't expected anyone to join her, except maybe minako to take her order. she certainly wasn't expecting carrie, not when they haven't spoken since she arrived. this is the first time kanaya's realized she's still around. god, she should probably ask terry how that's going. ]

Long life, really. It just waits to remind you of it sometimes.

So. Uh, how've you been?

[catmask]

[ And on Carrie's end, there's apparently nothing to ponder here. Being obscenely reclusive, well, that should just be expected. She hasn't even thanked Kanaya yet for helping out when she first back back? No big. She finally glances up, and it turns into a sidelong study over her straw. ]

Fine. [ An answer that will probably never change. Except, wait, she's not here on business, so she arches a brow and adds: ] How old're you now, anyway?

[glowsferatu]

[ fine. don't think kanaya doesn't know the code behind that one, she uses it all the time. she takes a deep breath and runs her hands through her hair, glancing up at the ceiling. ]

I've been sixteen since May. Went home for a bit and came back older, you know how it is. [ she says this hoping it will prompt carrie to answer the question herself. it's a longshot, really. ]

[catmask]

[ haha, Carrie be forthcoming with information. She only nods, considering that. ]

That was way too heavy a sigh for a sixteen-year-old, back there.

[ Nevermind that they're the same age. Totally different situations, man. ]

[ kanaya should've expected this, really. she doesn't move much, but her gaze does flick down her pronounced nose to somewhere more carrie-ward. ]

Maybe it was. But if that's the case, when have my sighs ever been typical of my age? [ sixteen-year-olds aren't supposed to be running households, they are not supposed to be managing failing magazines. ]

[catmask]

[ Yeah, Kanaya has always been pretty... responsible. That's not a stress-free lifestyle. She glances away to study a wall across the restaurant. ]

You were on that thing with Jess. City Lights, right?

[glowsferatu]

"Were" is a funny way to put it. [ especially since she's thinking about making it a past tense thing. she sits up, finally. ]

Have you seen her anywhere today?

[catmask]

[ She shakes her head, eyes still on that wall. Maybe there's a TV screen over there, or a suspicious figure. Whatever it is, it's easier than getting angry at the Porter all over again. No matter how long you're out of the City, you never forget that struggle. ]

She's gone. Maybe she'll be back in a bit, but...

[ ...But it's best never to count on that. ]

[glowsferatu]

That's what I thought. [ and she lets out another sigh, slumping further down the bench. ]

One more for a very long list month. But that's summer for you, isn't it?

[ She keeps wanting to pack up and slip away, and every time she reaches for her drink it's with the subconscious intention of scooping it up to be on her way. But she finally forces herself to put it down on the table fully and ease out of her perpetually-ready-to-go half slouch into a proper sit.

Doing social is hard. ]

I kinda figured Jess was here for good.

[ kanaya notices a bit of oddness as the other girl's posture shifts, but it's nothing she can quite put a finger on. instead, she corrects her own, starts paying more attention. ]

I suppose that's just how it is with the more longterm departures, but I wouldn't say she's the first in the current running. She had already been here quite a while when I arrived, but I imagine it will be much the same if [ when? ] I'm ever exPorted.

[ she's quiet for a bit, screwing up her lips as she looks carrie in the eyes. ] ...It was with you.

[Minako's been spending most of her time in the kitchen, but that doesn't mean she doesn't regularly look out across the tables to see who's here. When she spots Kanaya, it's a good reason to find the time to take a little break, and she soon comes wandering over.]

Hey, it's good to see you!

[glowsferatu]

Well, you know. I had just remembered that I'm actually allowed breaks, and thought I should stop by. [ it's a funny way to put it when the one who approves your breaks is yourself, but let's be real, she's also the only person likely to have denied it to her.

she hasn't really thought it ahead this far, what she should say about what's on her mind. better to not bring it up at all until she does know. ]

I'm glad that you did! That kind of thing is bad to forget about, you know. [She keeps the concern low-key and friendly, but she can't keep it from showing altogether.] You seem a bit tired.

Can I get anything for you?

[glowsferatu]

[ easier just to ignore that note with the question left open. she's incredibly tired, of a great many things too, but she doesn't want to talk about that. even thinking about it is a bit overwhelming, given all the things causing it. ]

What soups do you have for the day?

[Minako lets it pass without comment, although she doesn't exactly stop looking concerned.]

Today there's tomato, chicken and vegetable, or miso.

[Which is more than the two soups-of-the-day mentioned by the menu, but never mind.]

Suppose I'll take the tomato, then. It will complement the grilled cheese better, I think.

[ because she's totally the expert here on human food, definitely. she puts her menu back down and looks up at minako. she may not know what she's going to say, but she needs to at least be clear that something has to be said. ] You don't happen to have a few spare minutes, do you?

Sure. [No hesitation. She can make a little time if she needs to.] Just let me get your soup and your sandwich first. And something to drink?

[glowsferatu]

Darjeeling, if you don't mind.

...I hope it won't be any trouble. [ more the time than the tea, of course. ]

Not at all! I'll be right back.

[With a quick thumbs-up, she heads briskly off.

Before long she's back again, carrying a tray with a bowl of soup, a grilled cheese sandwich, a cup of tea and an iced coffee. Everything but the coffee is set down in front of Kanaya; the coffee she keeps for herself.]

Here we go! I hope that you enjoy it.

[Keeping the coffee for herself, she stashes the now-empty tray in the seat of an unoccupied chair and settles down in the seat opposite Kanaya.]

--So, what's up?

I just, you know, wanted to talk... [ obviously nothing cagey in that. she picks up her tea and stirring it as she waits for it to cool a bit. ]

How have things been here, since you've taken over?

[xxii_thefool]

Busy. [A rueful admission, accompanied by a little hitch of a laugh.] I kind of feel like I've been running around in circles a lot, you know?

It's gotten a bit easier now that I have some regular help, but it's still keeping me really busy. I never really thought about how much stuff there is to do besides cooking, serving, and cleaning up. It's more complicated than I'd thought.

[glowsferatu]

I'm sure it would have to be. The full implications of how much work is there never fully sinks in until it rests solely on your shoulders. But at least it isn't being carried alone, from the sound of it.

[ which is probably something she can use to segue, but, well... ] And all that help was been working out well for you, yes?
