SUMMARY: Trying to stop thinking so much, Momiji starts wondering around the City.

Momiji had been spending his first few days in the City trying to wrap his mind around the concept of being stuck in this new reality. It hadn’t been going well. Thinking about it left him depressed and filled with questions about the future. The silence that filled his apartment wasn’t helping. Momiji had never really been alone. Sure, the houses on Sohma estate were usually quiet, but there had still been the background hum of human life. To keep himself from dwelling on his situation, Momiji had been busy acquiring a new wardrobe and decorating his room.

But there was only so much time he could dedicate to deciding between shades of pink and by Friday, Momiji running out of things to do. Determined not to spend his weekend worrying over something he couldn’t change, he rose early and with a game plan. He was going to explore the City and get familiar with the place he’d be calling home from now on. Mentally pumping himself, Momiji pulled on a sweater and strode out the door.

Momiji took a step back when she took out her eye. He didn't know whether to be horrified or grossed out. He settled for something between disturbed and polite. "B-because I might meet someone new who wants to be my friend. And they'd want to know who I am."

"That's why have name. Two not needed."

The eye turned to keep him in its sight. Aughra cackled. "Frightened of my eye? Hm?"

"Well, most people don't call me by my last name. Usually I just use my first." He still staring down that eye. It was staring back. "Umm." Would it be rude to say yes? But lying was also wrong. He nodded slightly, feeling guilty. "I'm sorry. I'm not used to people taking out their eyes."

This reaction made Aughra pleased. "Good boy. Have sense. Be afraid of unknown. Means you won't die easy." She nods.

Momiji tried for another smile and bowed slightly. "I hope that I won't." Dieing here would be terrible. "Thank you for the advice Aughra."

She smiled back, although it wasn't that much of a change. The eye popped back in her head. "Pay attention around you. Watch heavens. Even here, heavens tell what will come."

Momiji would be a liar if he said he was relieved that the woman put her eye back in place. "I'll try to. I've never seen signs from the sky, but if they come here..." He mused, looking up. Maybe that was just how things worked in this world. " But I promise to pay attention!"

Aughra nodded. "Aughra always pay attention. That's why I 3000 now." She nodded again.

"3000?" He exclaimed, impressed. "That's amazing! Is living that long normal for your world?"

She looks pleased. "No. Aughra better than everyone. Know more." She nods. "Know more means live longer. Learn!"

Momiji smiled, it seemed he had gotten on the woman's good side. "Ah, then you are special." He nodded, again taking her advice. "I intend to learn a lot here. I'm planning to start school so I can see what this place has to offer."

"School? What that?"

Momiji took a few moments to figure out how to best explain the system. "It's a place where people go to learn. Older people who know more, teach the younger people what they know." He paused thoughtfully. "People usually go for about a decade, but some people keep going for many more years. That way they can learn even more."

"How ones who teach know what needed?" Aughra asked, interest piqued. Her eye came out again, so she could see Momiji's face better. "People not need to know same things."

Momiji barely twitched when he was the eye pop back out. "Well, at fist every gets taught the same stuff. How to read, history, math. As you get older you can special classes to learn the stuff you want to know." He paused, looking down and thinking. "But that's not really the same as what you need to know."

"I guess that it's up to the person learning to find out what they need to know and learn it."

Aughra nodded. "Still must pay attention. Not pay attention, not know anything."

Momiji found himself nodding along with her. "Yes. I'll work hard to pay attention."

Aughra nodded again, satisfied. "Good boy," she said, popping her eye back in again.

Momiji smiled up at her. "Thank you, Aughra." He was again relieved to see the eye return it a 'normal' position. He might be able to roll with the punches, but some stuff would always give him the willies. Someone popping pout their eye was one of those things.

"Where you go now?" Aughra asked, blinking a few times to get used to having her eye back in her head.

"Hmmm." Momiji though, rocking on his heels. "I don't know. I was planning to explore the City. See what I could find."

Aughra snorted. "Big rocks. People. Things that move. This tree better."

Momiji grinned, shaking his head. "Maybe. But I'd like to get to meet the people here. Make some new friends."

"Friends?" Aughra repeated slowly, the word obviously unfamiliar. "What that?"

Momiji could have fell over when he heard that. "You don't know what friends are?" He asked, shocked. "They're one of the most important things in the world!" He failed for a few moments, thinking of how to explain.

"Friends are people who love you and care about you and you want to spend time with and..."He rambled, trying to put it into words. "They're just so important!"
