SUMMARY: Lyra runs into Jason again.

[If someone had been looking down onto the rooftops of this particular part of town, and had also been able to see past illusions, said hypothetical observer would have seen a small teenage girl hovering above the rooftops with a pine marten either in her arms or on her shoulders, occasionally landing and looking around before moving on.

Lyra wasn't that far from her house. She'd headed out to patrol, and hopefully clear her head- what had happened to Vivi bothered her the more she looked into things.]

[Jason's boot connects hard with the face of the mugger and he quickly puts him out with the side of his hand to the mugger's neck in a swift but powerful swipe. There's all kinds of nerve centers in the neck and he strikes a good handful of them at once and the burly man goes down for the count. But, before he hits the ground, Jason is about to finish the job and is about to kill him.]

[Okay, beating people unconscious is fine. Lyra's not one to complain about that, given her habit of using horrifying illusions in crime fighting. But killing someone who's already knocked out? Not okay at all. She reaches out with her TK, trying to immobilize Jason before he kills the mugger.]

No! That's enough!

[The TK does indeed stop him, just inches from the guy's nose, and for a second Jason's just confused. What the hell is this? When he glances up at her, he realizes that this must be her ability, like how he has this brand new night vision. Awesome.]

He's a dirtbag, kid. He deserves it.

[Lyra just shakes her head, as she starts tying one of the muggers up. Her expression seems a little bit hurt. Almost betrayed.]

Maybe. But I'm going to leave these two for the police. And make them think spiders were crawling around in their heads for a bit.

This place.... the police are good, but there just en't enough of 'em. So people help them out.

[Jason continues to try and break free of the TK, angered that she stopped him. Just when he thought he was starting to like her, she has to end up like all the other goodie-two-shoes out there. Just like Dickie, just like Drake, just like all of them.]

Sure they are. And then the dirtbags break back out and go right back to what they were doing. Great plan.

That happen a lot in your world? Because it doesn't here.

[She finishes tying up one mugger and, using TK, releases Jason as she drags the other mugger toward her to tie him up too.]

Besides, if we did that, everyone would be scared of us again. And not everyone can hide or defend themselves.

It does. [The comment is filled with anger, terse, as Jason pockets his hands, feeling quite ready to murder something.]

When they're back out on the street, I told you so. You can't just let them do what they want. We have to rule by fear. Trust me, I've been around long enough to know.

Then I'm sorry. [It's sincere, but she's not sure what else to say. Lyra glances toward the thug that's still conscious He doesn't seem to be listening- in fact, he's pretty much panicking and trying to squirm away from something that can't be seen.]

There are loads of ways to scare people without killing 'em. Especially with all the powers people here have.

[Jason stares over at her, confused by the apology. He hasn't heard one from anyone in a very, very long time. Hearing it from a kid almost seems wrong. Still, it soothes his temper and he shrugs like he doesn't care one bit.]

What kind of ants does this guy have in his pants?

He thinks he's looking at a monster. D'you want to see it? [Lyra shifts her weight, then rests a hand on Pantalaimon, keeping her tone neutral. The offer to show him the monster is intended more as an offer to show off than as a threat.]

No thanks, kid. [Jason shakes his head for added emphasis. His definition of a monster is a pedophile who gets out of jail, a rapist who dodges justice on a technicality; those are the true monsters. He crosses his arms and glances over at her.]

How long have you been doing this?

More than a year. Toph and I decided that if this place needed help, we'd give it. Besides, we'd both been through dangerous stuff before we came here. [Lyra lifts Pantalaimon up, and somehow, she looks older than she should be for a moment.]

We've actually done pretty well in this neighborhood.

[Jason knows that look, knows how that feels, and still just shrugs.]

That thing Toph?

[He didn't know whether or not he'd start seeing someone else wandering around with Lyra and felt suddenly and strangely protective before he shook it off.]

No, this is Pan- he's my daemon. [And she pronounces it the same as 'demon'.] Toph's a girl.

[Lyra straightens up, while Pan looks up at Jason with an expression that's suspicious, and far too intelligent to belong on an animal.]

[Demon, huh. The kid's involved in witchcraft. That's no small chunk of skills right there. He shrugs.]

Just like names with faces.

[Lyra's never going to be able to get away from people assuming she's some sort of witch, is she?]

You'll probably meet her sooner or later. [And Lyra makes a note in her head to tell Toph about this guy.]

So are you going to try to walk me home again tonight? Because I got other things to worry about right now.

[Probably not. But it's not Jason's place to judge that kind of thing.]

I'm not a glorified babysitter, kid. I'm here to do a job, too.

What, did you hear about something? Toph and I, we've gotten most of the worst stuff out of here. [Lyra doesn't normally care if other heroes patrol in the neighborhood, but if he's going to shoot people... Pantalaimon lets out a barely audible growl.]

Are you going to patrol around here a lot?
