A city of villains. Hell, he should have figured. There was no way in hell this kind of conspiracy could have been restricted to one city, and there was no way that there was just Iron Man in this world. There had to be others, they just didn't know where to look.

Now things made a lot more sense.

It looked like it was that time again- it was these brainstorming sessions (if you could call them that) that had gotten them their best ideas as to Iron Man's true nature and purpose- hopefully, this would be just the same.

He absently wondered, as he opened the front door, the bell jingling, if Mello still had that pie he'd brought before.

Duo nodded back, similarly without a word, and followed Mello up the stairs. This was, after all, purely business. Following after Mello, he plopped himself into a chair opposite the couch and rested his elbows on his knees.

He looked thoughtful for a moment before opening his mouth to speak, closing it again, giving a small nod, and finally speaking. "Think they're ported in or native?"

He cocked his head. It was a difficult question to answer. On the one hand, they seemed to have been established for a while. On the other, the amount that Iron Man knew about them made it seem as though he'd been keeping tabs on them for a while, and that would mean . . .

"At this point . . . " Mello said slowly, "I'd say it's a toss-up. But I'm leaning towards ported in because Iron Man's obviously been keeping tabs on them. That'd tally with what we know of his stalker habits regarding his 'charges'." He snorted slightly. "They're villains, but it's obvious by now that the guy doesn't give a crap, so there's got to be another reason he's monitoring them."

"But if he had an entire city to shove the supervillains he ported in into, then why is he still porting in and setting loose obvious villains in this city?" Duo shook his head. "I think there's a little more to it than that. Especially since now, he's telling us all not to go there. Right?"

Duo stared at a point on the floor somewhere, thinking again. "I think.. maybe..." He lifted his head again, like a lightbulb had gone up above him. "What if there's a villain equivalent running that city that's porting bad guys into there with 'villainous potential', and Iron Man's porting those in here with 'heroic potential', and both sides are gearing up for some kind of all-out war with each other, using us as expendable pawns?" It all just sort of came out before he could really stop to think about the theory.

"If there's an equivalent villain Porter - which, I don't know, I find the whole idea of a villain's city to be pretty damn ridiculous in any case, because this isn't a heroes' city, it's just full of people who got ported here randomly and may or may not be doing anything useful - " Mello let out a long breath, shaking his head irritably. "The point is, if there's a 'villain Porter', then it'll be making mistakes, too, bringing in people who don't quite fit the criteria, like this Porter brought in the Joker and Carnage and so on. We'd probably have heard about something like that."

Glancing up at him, he frowned slightly. "As for war . . . I don't know. I'm still of the opinion that whatever's going on with Iron Man is more complicated than politics or anything like that."

"Right..." Duo looked thoughtful. "Hm... but then again, Iron Man does somewhat control the flow of information in and out of the city, but..." Duo sighed. "He said it picks based on heroic potential. We don't know exactly what that means, but it could be based on power, or- well, definitely doesn't seem to be based on people's individual moral values..." He chuckled. "So what if the other one has one like that? Though then again, since they're all villains, they might just kill any good guys they port in."

"But in the chance that it's something entirely different... maybe they were his first 'test subjects' when trying out the porter, so he tossed them into that city- like a cage- and the people he's kept in this city are the perfected versions?" He shrugged.

"He doesn't have to be, though. We could be doing a lot more to get information. There are plenty of unlisted people who could be doing digging outside the City. Just because he controls things here doesn't mean his influence reaches everywhere. Although . . . " Mello tapped the arm of the couch thoughtfully. "It might be greater than is immediately apparent. That'd be something to investigate. As far as killing any 'heroes' that are ported to the HIVE, that's . . . also a possibility. I can't see any way of proving it short of going there, however.

"If it's a cage, though, I can't imagine he'd be as afraid of them as he seems to be. No . . . " Frowning, Mello looked at the space just above Duo's head and gritted his teeth. "It's something else . . . "

"Yeah, well, it's getting them to pay attention for a minute that's the problem, I guess. That's the main problem with this city- short attention span." He ran his fingers through his bangs. "If we can get these people to help, okay, but if they won't or dunno what they're doing, they might be doing more harm than good."

"Yeah, well, what?" Duo frowned in thought. "I mean. ...They're enemies, the HIVE and Iron Man. It seems that much isn't an act. But if there's more, we need to know more about them."
