[ he wasn't actively avoiding everyone. well, maybe he was, but he couldn't help it. he was in that weird spot where his whole stupid perception of things had been turned on its head, and he still wasn't sure how to deal with it.

he liked jess. a lot. and that hadn't changed and shouldn't be affected and he knew that. even if she'd been peter at one point or whatever (he still wasn't completely clear on the details; at first he'd been too freaked to listen to fully listen to what was being said, and now it was too late to ask) it didn't really change anything. he was still goofy in love with her.

but he'd made her cry and been an ass, and he wasn't sure what to do to fix that. it couldn't be as simple as gwen said. but then again, johnny's dealings with these things were slim. he was the guy who cut and ran when things got difficult. fixing the mess he'd made of things was hard.

so instead of you know, seeking out his girlfriend and apologizing, he was sitting on a rooftop trying to figure out a good way to do this.

he wasn't actually having much luck. ]

[Spidey was taking a coffee break on top of a water tower when he noticed a familiar-looking figure a few rooftops away. The distance was too far to make out any facial features, but something about their posture, and the shock of blond hair ... Johnny. Well, there were worse coincidences -- Peter'd been wanting to talk to the kid anyway, after the mess Jessica'd come home in the other night.

After a brief detour to toss his coffee cup -- a bug he might be, but a litterbug? Never! -- Spidey swung his way over. He landed in a perch on the edge of Johnny's rooftop, perfectly balanced on top of the narrow sill. Johnny, up close, looked ... slightly less than balanced himself. ]

I know it's just an old wives' tale, but life as a superhero being what it is? You'd better be careful, or your face might actually freeze that way.

[ oh it's peter. JUST WHO JOHNNY WANTED TO SEE.

which might be a little unfair, since this is hardly this peter's fault. but the urge to sock him is still there. johnny blows out a frustrated breath. talking to this peter is still a little weird. he's just this side of too...well, johnny can't quite define it, but there's some sort of disconnect here, and he's aware of it, even if he can't find the words to accurately describe it. ]

[Still crouched, Spidey reaches up to scratch his head, unsure how to proceed. Jess is the little sister he'd never had, but Johnny's the younger version of a man he loves like a brother -- and for all that Peter wishes Johnny had handled Jess' revelation with a little more grace, he remembers himself at fifteen, and his Johnny at fifteen, and he knows neither of them would have handled the situation any better.]

Look ...

[He rolls forward into a more normal sitting pose, hands braced against the edge of the roof.]

I'm going to skip the usual bantery preamble, all right? I talked to Jess.

[ and johnny just puts his head in his hands. because this is really happening. this is really his life right now and weird old peter is going to talk to him about the fact that he was making out with a clone of his best friend. ]

Are we gonna have a talk?

[ the words come out all muffled because johnny's face is hidden behind his palms. ]

[Spidey pauses long enough to let the weight of the situation sink in. Then:]

How are you doing?

[ there's a pause while johnny smooshes his hands over his face again. ]

This kind of sucks.

So I heard Jess' side of the story ... [A few beats.] She thinks you're disgusted by her. Now, maybe I'm just an old romantic at heart, but I've got a hunch that that's not true.
