[She tilted her head slightly at the eager reaction.]

Sindar? I don't believe I've heard them referred to in such a shortened form before...

What are the Sindar as you know them?

A mysterious people said to have lived thousands of years before our time, powerful sorcerers who knew more about the secrets of the True Runes than anyone else ever has. They were rumored to have either died out long ago, or gone into hiding, possibly in another dimension. All of their secrets, their lore...died with them. Only the ruins of their great cities are left, scattered all over the world.

[he has a very intense look on his face] ...they were said to know techniques to remove True Runes safely from their bearers, and seal them in order to protect them.

[Ysera looks thoughtful for a moment.]

I admit, there are some similarities in what you speak of and the elven races of my world. The Highborne of the ancient Kaldorei were among the greatest mortal sorcerers Azeroth has ever known. After the Sundering they parted ways with the rest of the Kaldorei, who turned to druidism instead of arcane sorcery. The Highborne renamed themselves the Quel'dorei thousands of years ago. It was only recently, however, that most of the Quel'dorei renamed themselves once again, to the Sin'dorei.

But the Elven races have always had a great affinity for magic and the Quel'dorei are the original teachers of the human mages. I am uncertain what True Runes you refer to. But some of the greatest, and longest lasting, of the magical works of the Quel'dorei are the Elven Runestones.

[he is utterly fascinated, with the look in his good eye of someone who's just found the Holy Grail. It only takes a moment's thought before he's pulling off his right glove and showing the back of his hand, where there's a faint mark like a very faded tattoo]

I bear the True Lightning Rune. Is something like this...at all familiar to you?

[he's not aware that the Rune incarnation met Ysera in dragon form - it doesn't tell him these things]

[And that's why the magical energy around him felt familiar. Familiar, but very much muted as if mostly sealed away. And then Geddoe's face clicked with a vague memory that had been shared by an Ancient of Lightning.

Her eyebrows lifted in surprise as her ears flicked back at the shock.
]

You have an Ancient sealed into your very flesh?

[just a slow nod, even if he's never heard the term before]

I have been True Lightning's bearer for almost eighty years. It has been an almost constant companion. [the slightest flicker of some darker emotion, then] I never sealed it away or tried to get rid of it.

[identity profile] ofthedream.livejournal.com 2011-09-07 05:54 am (UTC)(link)
[She frowned slightly as she looked him over once again.]

Eighty years... Are you not human? [Either that, or the Ancient's power has made him immortal.]

How was this done, and why? Are you the Ancient's living Avatar? [The Trolls did that sometimes with their Loa. Normally, the Loa were willing participants and chose their Avatars. But some recent and notable instances had involved enslaving the Ancient animal spirits.]

No, I'm human...the Runes give eternal life to their bearers.

[a pause and a sigh. He's already spilled some major secrets, no sense in holding any back now. Not with someone this powerful]

It was an accident. I was never meant to bear the Rune...but Rune have a choice in the matter. It attached itself to me when I was thirty-six. We have no means of removing them, without the Sindar...well. [a very uncomfortable pause] Without killing the bearer.

[identity profile] ofthedream.livejournal.com 2011-09-11 09:34 am (UTC)(link)
[A human turned Eternal...]

The Ancient chose you, then? But you say it is a Rune, not a being; and that there are others. Why are your world's demi-gods bound so?

[Something of a touchy subject. She had no wish to see Ancients bound or enslaved unless it had been necessary to stop some maddened rampaging that upset the Balance, or voluntary for some cause.]

[thinking for a moment how best to explain, with that look on his face]

It...is how our world was created, the stories say. The 27 True Runes were born at the beginning of the world. They seem to prefer to be attached to people rather than dormant in crystal form. [he glances at his right hand, still laid bare to her] True Lightning does, anyway. If not for my interference, it would have remained closed away in a temple in Harmonia, collected like some treasure never to be used.

[identity profile] ofthedream.livejournal.com 2011-09-14 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
[Ysera frowns slightly, considering that. It was unlikely there was any accurate knowledge of how the Ancients had been bound as crystals or with avatars. Not unless the Ancients knew. But if they didn't even tell their bearers...

She sighed softly.
]

I can understand why they wouldn't wish to be bound in crystals. It is not the same as most Ancients I know - they take physical forms of their own. But there are some who choose mortal avatars to bear their power, granting them power and abilities they would not otherwise possess. Such seems the case for you.

[one more flex of his hand, and Geddoe draws the glove back over the Rune to hide it as usual]

They can take forms...but they usually don't. Not unless something goes wrong, or they're invoked. [as he remembers True Fire's dragon at the opening of the seal] Perhaps True Lightning shares my desire for freedom. It isn't something I would have chosen, but I'm stuck with it now.

[a pause, and then he looks up at her, still somewhat in awe] I haven't spoken with someone who understands in...such a long time.

[identity profile] ofthedream.livejournal.com 2011-10-15 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
[Ysera smiled softly at his expression. For all that he was an Avatar, he was still very human and so very young still. Unlike the Troll Avatars, he hadn't taken on any of the physical characteristics of True Lightning - certainly no horn or horse head and hooves. And from the accidental nature of his choosing, it was likely he and the Ancient didn't commune very clearly. He was certainly no trained priest used to channeling the voice of his deity.]

Our worlds are very different from this one, but ours share some similarities, I suspect. There are not many others who would truly understand where we're coming from.
