[Barnaby enters his unit at the MAC late in the evening, weary and slow-minded. He spent the day performing odd tasks around—something he hadn't done since his early teens, before he entered the academy. With a shake of his head, the memory clears. He reaches for the light switch, only to find it already flipped, and Kotetsu making himself at home.]

Well, this saves me the trouble of finding you. [He hoists the plastic bag he carried in with him onto the table. It clunks, containing a few six packs of discount beer. He doesn't explain it.]

[he gives a short laugh.] I just came over to say hello. [and opened your door and made himself at home.] It's more homey than just a chair, right?

Now I regret not bringing food. [He pauses, like he's at a loss for what to do. No TV, an unfamiliar internet, no bathtub, no wine. Is this really what he's like when there is nothing superficial to amuse him? Just.. Kotetsu. So he reaches into the bag and pries two beers free, moving to sit down in a spare chair near by, offering a can to his companion.] This city is... primitive.

[He sniffs is distaste, cradling the unopened can in his hands.] I don't see how you can say that.

You make the best with what you have. [a sigh before he takes a drink.] I'm from the country, I'm sort of used to this.

[Making a sort of noncommittal sound, he busies himself with opening his beer. Can it really be true that he doesn't know where Kotetsu came from, what his life was like before he was Wild Tiger—no, before their partnership? And does he want to know these things now?] I've... never left Sternbild.

[Well. that stuns him into silence, which he covers up with a gulp of the distasteful liquid. Then finally...] Ol— Kotetsu. I've been wondering something.

Huh, what's wrong? [he gets up to go get some glasses, because he drinks his beer classily.]

[There is a pause, in which is decides how exactly to place his words, let alone any number of things to ask about.] Do you remember when I became King of Heroes?

Of course I do! You had a whole interview after it happened too. I was also there when I broke the top five. [he's so happy that he's not in last place anymore.] Why do you ask?

[He drinks slowly, considering this information. Though, thinking deeply about matters of time travel is too terrifying for a night like this.] I don't have any memory of that.

[instead of being worried, Kotetsu makes a small thinking noise before replying simply:] Oh, you must be from the past. It's okay, Bunny- you might just be a few months behind me.

You seem awfully used to this. [He sighs] You've barely recovered from your injury. And the program recently decided how many points Jake was worth. That's the life I remember.

You're almost a year behind me. [that explains a lot of it, actually.] It doesn't matter, though.

Why doesn't it? [Suddenly, he's looking over at Kotetsu, expression wobbling on the edge of confusion.] A year of my life out from under the burden of revenge.

[He ducks his head to hide his smile, his soft chuckle.] That sounds like something Sky High would tell me.

Hey, hey, don't give Sky High credit for something that cool! [huff huff. but, he's glad to see that bunny is at least chuckling.]

Sky High-- [He's very serious again suddenly] Did he mention anything strange to you?

[Deciding that he'd get to the bottom of this whole strange thing of Maverick turning his back on them, Kotetsu actually considers whether or not to tell Barnaby.] No, not really. Why?

[And Barnaby too decides that mentioning exactly what Sky High said would go nowhere. GOOD COMMUNICATION SKILLS GUYS.] It's unnerving, being able to potentially see your own future.

[Finishing off his can, he sits it aside. There is a pause here, as if he's truly contemplating his answer. Then:] I think you've summed up our partnership.

I'm good at some things, you know. Despite what everyone says, there's some good that comes with age and experience. [Let it sink in...] Did I just call myself old?

[A low, dark chuckle, and he glances in Kotetsu's direction.] That's true.

I don't know if that's a compliment or you're actually agreeing that I'm old.

Definitely old. [He hoists himself up to fetch another beer. The taste isn't quite so bad anymore, and neither is his mood.]

I just can't win, can I? [He hasn't even opened his beer, so he just tosses it at Barnaby.] You take it and I'll grab another one.

[He pauses on his haunches to catch the can, then falls back down into a sitting position.] I've told you before, you shouldn't set yourself up like that.

I've already come to terms of my fate. Some people were put on this earth to lose. [sighs so dramatically; his first world life is so hard.]

[He smiles, mostly to himself, and contemplates the unopened can. He barely has a buzz, but it feels like the alcohol has done its job twofold already. After a pause, he speaks again.] I wouldn't call fourth place losing.

... Huh? That stupid ranking thing. Who needs to be King of Heroes anyway - [then a beat, he just insulted the King of Heroes anyway!] other than you. I'm not cutout for being on top anyway.

I know. [He's not clarifying what he's referring to, maybe all of it.] But it isn't worthless.

[Even though Kotetsu is leaning back with his eyes closed, he's completely serious.] I didn't become a Hero to compete for rank. You're the King of Heroes because you have what it takes.
