Sometimes when this place gets kinda empty, the sound of the breath fades with the light

WHO: [livejournal.com profile] sweetvalleygirl & [livejournal.com profile] undeadsidekick
WHERE: Jessica's room and then elsewhere!
WHEN: Thursday at midnight and onward!
WARNINGS: None probably.
SUMMARY: Jessica sneaks out of Laura's apartment to have an adventure with Jason!
FORMAT: Words

It was just before midnight and Jessica had given up on Jason coming to pick her up. Whatever. It wasn't like she really wanted to go out anyway. That was what she kept telling herself at least as she rebraided her pigtails and changed into her pajamas. Her feelings weren't hurt, not really. It's just that this was the first time her demands had gone unheeded with him, and really, it was an unusual feeling for her. Was this how girls felt when they got rejected? It must be something like that, she figured.

Sighing sadly, she called goodnight to Laura and switched off the light, crawling into bed with the puppy on the foot of her bed. The sooner she fell asleep, the sooner she could forget about stupid Jason standing her up.

Approximately two hours later (and four hours past their designated meeting time), came a metallic tapping on the glass of her bedroom window. Jason was lucky, Jessica's room had a fire escape which meant easy climbing. No ziplines, repelling, or other theatrics necessary. It was cold and the new jacket he'd acquired wasn't quite as thick as the one currently draped over her desk chair, so when she didn't answer after the first knock, he tapped again, harder. Surely the dog would hear it at least.

It was only in retrospect that he thought of her claw-happy roommate and how that might not have been the slickest plan. Oh well.

"I told you," he said, dusting himself off. "I had shit to do."

He made quick work of removing his gloves and verifying that all essentials remained in place during the not so difficult climb. "So you wanted to go out."

"No, you didn't." Or so he'd keep telling himself. There was no way she'd been convinced a guy she'd gone out with all of twice was whipped enough to take her out at midnight, right? Right?

Watching her dress, he gestured vaguely to the pastel pajama pants that dragged a little on the ground. "Is that all you're wearing. It's cold you know."

"Suit yourself." If she didn't want to wear real clothes it wasn't on him. Not that Jason would ever be caught dead whipping down the street on a bike with no pants again. Two years as a teenager was quite enough of that, thanks.

He looked toward her, then to the window, then back to her again. "We've got two options here. Either we go through the door like normal people, or I can take you down the fire escape like a goddamn burglar. Advantage to the first being, your neighbors think you're less psychotic, but I don't want any trouble from that Laura girl. She tries to shank me again, and I'm leaving."

He considered another minute. That's right, they had multiple dogs. Multiple barky dogs.

"Alright." He crouched down, offering an arm to her. "If we're gonna do this, piggyback is probably the way to go since I'm betting those shoes have next to no traction and you've never jumped more than about four feet before."

Expert jumper or not, that didn't mean she was used to jumping out third story apartment windows or that he'd let her try it. Still, the tackling was a little unnecessary. "Oof. You're heavier than you look."

"So fucking comforting." He replied with a huff, even though he wasn't actually worried. Laura had animal senses or something. If she wanted Jason's head, she'd probably already have it. With no small amount of control, they slipped out from under the open window and onto the fire escape. "Alright, seriously. Hang on tight."

And with that he jumped off the side, one hand pushing off the safety rail and angling their fall such that they landed solidly on the lower platform.

"We good? We've got two more of these to go." He paused just a little longer than necessary after that that squeak just to make sure she was still hanging on okay. After Jason felt her squeeze around him again, he nodded, and took off, mimicking the same movement until they were down on the next landing. Then again, till they were down on the cold concrete of the alley.

Again, he dropped to his knee and let her climb off. "Alright, let's go. There's got to be a deli or something open this late. We can get a soda before you have to sleep."

He side-eyed her slightly as he walked over to the candy apple red motorcycle chained to a lamppost at the end of the alley. "I don't know if ice cream is really what you need right now."

"Jeans." Reaching the bike, he climbed on, holding the only shiny red helmet out to her. "Or sweats, or something actually warm."
