DRAIN YOU OF YOUR SANITY

WHO: The Emissary and co. versus everybody
WHERE: Off the coast of Battery Park and throughout the City
WHEN: Just before midnight October 31st (technically November 1st)
WARNINGS: Violence and frightening imagery
SUMMARY: Drawn by Illidan’s magic, a demon from beyond reality has come forth to help the Betrayer doom the world. The battle that saves or destroys everything has begun. Happy Halloween, Cityverse!
FORMAT: Paragraph to start, whatever works after.

It came.

The Moon of midnight on All Hallow’s Eve shone wetly on the waters of the City’s Harbour. From beneath the surface a rumbling could be heard, as though emanating far, far below, within abyssal depths and ancient fathoms that could not possibly be there. First there was a ripple, then a wave, then the creature began to arise from the waters. It slid upwards and upwards, rising smoothly and continuously out of the ocean like a living edifice, a vast Thing ancient and immovable, a walking island sunken no longer. The head then the shoulders then the wings then the misshapen body came forth, yet still more of Its bulk remained beneath the waters, with slow thighs beginning to move It towards the City. All around it the sky and the ocean seemed to darken with an almost positive quality, as though jet-black ink was spilling into the universe itself. The Emissary had come.

Water flowed off Its body in torrents, mixing with drool and ichor. An unending series of sickly slopping and slobbering noises came from the twitching forest of tentacles around Its mouth, the product of a ravening hunger. The ocean heaved immensely around the Titan form, waves thrashing from the power of Its body. How to describe such a thing? How to even conceive of such horror, outside of madness or nightmare? That immense octopus head crowning the terrible body, those dragon-bat wings sprouting from Its back, those rubbery, sea-green scales, the mingled and loathsome aspects of the reptile, the mollusc- and the human! For it was on two feet that It moved, and with two arms did the Emissary reach out toward the morsels It slavered for.

An aura of panic and despair announced It, greater than any herald’s trumpet. Merely to look upon that incomprehensible shape and its alien geometry was to gamble with one’s sanity. Its very presence emanated a sense of immeasurable insignificance and absence of meaning, as though all the Earth was plankton in the presence of a whale. It moved with a shambling, unwholesome motion that had nothing to do with clumsiness, gathering speed. A mountain walked or stumbled! Toward the City, toward the Well. Toward the end of the world.

[ooc: goddamndoomchat is open on AIM if anyone's interested! There are some people fighting the Emissary who have not been slotted into threads yet; we will work those out as we go along! The raid against Illidan in Central Park will be posted by Jill later. Have fun everybody!]

Olivia had seen no reason to evacuate the City. Back home her job would have been to stay there and take these things down, and just because she wasn't officially employed to do so here didn't mean that she couldn't do it anyways. She had taken it upon her to gather a lot of ammunition- enough to last the night. So she roamed the streets and buildings, killing the spawn she could find. Tops of buildings were the best spot to locate new targets and she learned quickly to look up as well as down for the things could fly. On one such adventure to the top of a building she spotted what appeared to be a kid fighting them in the sky. Olivia didn't even hesitate a moment to begin shooting at them, being careful to avoid the kid, and called out, "Hey! Come over here!" It didn't matter to her which group heard- she could better protect the kid if they were closer and would have an easier time killing the monsters if they got closer.

Lyra managed to take out one of the creatures with her knives, and the gunfire took out another. Lyra snapped her head over to where she'd heard the voice, shoving back the remaining three spawn with telekinesis. Pantalaimon snarled, and Lyra put on a burst of speed, hoping to get to the woman before they could catch up, and she landed next to the woman, falling to her knees before raising a telekinetic shield around them, her knives falling onto the roof next to her.

"You- thank you," she mumbled, clutching Pantalaimon to her chest.

As the girl landed with some sort of creature (it looked a little like a fox (but not really) and Olivia's knowledge of animals wasn't great enough) she fired off more shots into the beasts which had begun to move in their direction. There wasn't any panic in her shots, just the confidence and surety that came along with Olympic level marksmanship. She took two down before the third got close enough to spit some goo at them, faster than she expected. There was only time to duck and cover the girl before it hit but it never reached them as she expected, instead spatting on the shield. Quickly she fired at it a few more times, dropping it from the sky, though more were sure to come sooner or later.

She turned to the girl and spoke softly. "Hey, what are you doing here? It's not a great time to be out and about."

"I didn't realize some of them could fly." Lyra's expression was something far, far more serious than should ever belong on a fourteen year old girl's face.

"We wanted to get an idea of what was going on and where I should go to help," Lyra said, standing up, "I'll be more careful next time."

She gestured, and the knives lifted themselves to chest level, still dripping with whatever was inside those creatures, when a cry of "Look!" from Pantalaimon made her glance over her shoulder to see several more spawn glide over.

"There's more of them!"

At the cry Olivia jolted to her feet and found the creatures in the sky as they approached. There wasn't any time to worry about the fact that this girl could levitate knives (that a girl so small had knives in the first place and such an expression) and that whatever had stopped the goo was probably from her as well. The top of the roof wasn't ideal for combat, so she drew her gun again while placing a hand on the girl's shoulder.

"We should get off this building and back on the streets. We have more routes of escape from there. It'll be better if you stick with me."

Lyra nodded, and the shield intensified, tinting everything outside of it in shades of gold.

"Don't use your gun until I stop it," Lyra warned. The last thing she wanted was bullets ricocheting around her head as she went down the stairs.

The visible outline of the shield gave Olivia more confidence and she followed the girl down the stairs, holding her gun ready for as soon as the shied dropped. Her training and experience had served her well tonight and she'd had no trouble catching sight of any monsters before it was too late. It also wasn't very easy to sneak past them so there was no point in staying silent.

"I'm Olivia. What's your name?"

[identity profile] lyingbrat.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 06:41 am (UTC)(link)
"My name's Lyra."

Lyra was moving quickly, Pantalaimon riding on her shoulders as she headed out the door, hands clenched into fists as several spawn headed over, and Lyra dropped the shield with a simple "Now!", sending out a shockwave of telekinetic energy than knocked the closest spawn a few meters back.

"Nice to meet you Lyra. Why don't you stick with me until we can get you somewhere safer?"

Olivia fired as the shield dropped, barely even registering Lyra's cue. Without stopping she fired at each one, dropping them to the ground from right to left. Her gun clicked empty on the last one, leaving it wounded but standing and moved as quickly as she could, dropping the empty clip out of her gun and pulling out the next one, hoping Lyra would keep it from charging them while she was doing so. Even if Olivia was almost sure she could kill it before it reached them there was no harm in being safe.

Lyra sent a knife into the last one's forehead, sending it stumbling back before falling over and not getting up. Lyra sighed.

"I know where I need to go." Which was in Lyra's mind, wherever she could help.

[identity profile] helpedyoupaint.livejournal.com 2011-10-31 07:10 am (UTC)(link)
Olivia clicked the new clip in place and gave their surroundings a quick scan before glancing down at Lyra and holding out her hand. "Where's that? I'll take you."

[identity profile] lyingbrat.livejournal.com 2011-11-01 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
"I can take care of myself," Lyra told the older woman as she recalled her knives to her hands as Pantalaimon darted ahead.

"I need to get some things from my home- and make sure that it's still there," she told her, "Then I'm going to keep fighting these things.

[identity profile] helpedyoupaint.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
When Olivia thought about it, the girl could take care of herself. At least far better than any other child could. But it still went against everything she had ever done to leave Lyra to do her own stuff.

"I'm sure you can, but it'd be better if you were with at least one other person." She probably didn't want Olivia hanging around her either. "Do you have any friends that stayed back that you can be with tonight?"

[identity profile] lyingbrat.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
"Vivi and Toph are probably still there," Lyra told her, as Pantalaimon shot the woman a look of obvious exasperation as Lyra kept a look out for more creatures.

[identity profile] helpedyoupaint.livejournal.com 2011-11-02 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
Olivia didn't miss the look that confirmed her suspicions. "I'm not the most desirable companion so I'll accompany you until you find them and then take my leave."
