DRAIN YOU OF YOUR SANITY
WHO: The Emissary and co. versus everybody
WHERE: Off the coast of Battery Park and throughout the City
WHEN: Just before midnight October 31st (technically November 1st)
WARNINGS: Violence and frightening imagery
SUMMARY: Drawn by Illidan’s magic, a demon from beyond reality has come forth to help the Betrayer doom the world. The battle that saves or destroys everything has begun. Happy Halloween, Cityverse!
FORMAT: Paragraph to start, whatever works after.
It came.
The Moon of midnight on All Hallow’s Eve shone wetly on the waters of the City’s Harbour. From beneath the surface a rumbling could be heard, as though emanating far, far below, within abyssal depths and ancient fathoms that could not possibly be there. First there was a ripple, then a wave, then the creature began to arise from the waters. It slid upwards and upwards, rising smoothly and continuously out of the ocean like a living edifice, a vast Thing ancient and immovable, a walking island sunken no longer. The head then the shoulders then the wings then the misshapen body came forth, yet still more of Its bulk remained beneath the waters, with slow thighs beginning to move It towards the City. All around it the sky and the ocean seemed to darken with an almost positive quality, as though jet-black ink was spilling into the universe itself. The Emissary had come.
Water flowed off Its body in torrents, mixing with drool and ichor. An unending series of sickly slopping and slobbering noises came from the twitching forest of tentacles around Its mouth, the product of a ravening hunger. The ocean heaved immensely around the Titan form, waves thrashing from the power of Its body. How to describe such a thing? How to even conceive of such horror, outside of madness or nightmare? That immense octopus head crowning the terrible body, those dragon-bat wings sprouting from Its back, those rubbery, sea-green scales, the mingled and loathsome aspects of the reptile, the mollusc- and the human! For it was on two feet that It moved, and with two arms did the Emissary reach out toward the morsels It slavered for.
An aura of panic and despair announced It, greater than any herald’s trumpet. Merely to look upon that incomprehensible shape and its alien geometry was to gamble with one’s sanity. Its very presence emanated a sense of immeasurable insignificance and absence of meaning, as though all the Earth was plankton in the presence of a whale. It moved with a shambling, unwholesome motion that had nothing to do with clumsiness, gathering speed. A mountain walked or stumbled! Toward the City, toward the Well. Toward the end of the world.
[ooc: goddamndoomchat is open on AIM if anyone's interested! There are some people fighting the Emissary who have not been slotted into threads yet; we will work those out as we go along! The raid against Illidan in Central Park will be posted by Jill later. Have fun everybody!]

and so, she leaped from the corpse she'd just finished with and onto a passing flyer, tearing at its shoulders until it steered downward into a new wave approaching. she then pulled a portal in front of them to confuse their progress and got her chainsaw ready until they found a way around it, catching whatever second wind she could in the meantime.
she was very tired, herself, but at the same time she couldn't allow herself to acknowledge it. ]

You should retreat.
[This was stated rather matter-of-factly as Laura fell into place next to her, claws popping out of her hands and feet again.]
no subject
I vehemently disagree. There's work yet to be done here, and I have no intention of simply walking away from these duties while they remain unfinished.
[ the creatures were starting to work their way through her momentary bottleneck, so she took a moment to rev her chainsaw before setting upon them once again ]

[Laura saw that attitude in a lot of people, really. She knew that Kanaya was different, and possibly just as difficult to kill as she was...although her healing took significantly longer. Which meant that if she did make a mistake, she'd be useless for the rest of whatever this insane invasion was.]
[Still, she followed the other into the mass of monsters, tearing into them with the same rather horrific efficiency she'd had earlier.]
no subject
[ after all, the important thing in this situation had absolutely nothing to do with kanaya's needs. they would, if anything, only serve as an obstacle in the path of her duties.
the important thing had everything to do with a chainsaw and some monsters, and as few others having to dirty their hands as possible ]
no subject
[Laura had no idea what the girl's endurance really was, since she really had no information on vampires on any world, let alone vampires that glowed and had horns. But she somehow doubted 'fight forever' was one of their skills.]
no subject
[ and if it just so happened to get you killed, well what does that matter when you're already dead? ]
no subject
What was that?
[The question was directed at Kanaya even as her attention was focusing on searching the crowds for an actual human. She spotted a flash of what might have been blonde hair trying to run through the monsters towards a nearby street.]
There.

[ she ended up hopping from beast to beast, no time to deal with them, then spread her arms wide, the threads in her hands becoming faintly visible as she interacted with them, and two portals opened on either side of their wayward evacuee, parting the surrounding abominations not unlike the red sea, if kanaya had been familiar enough with judeochristian lore enough to recognize it.
the horde now occupied a bridged area that effectively skipped over the area where the endangered woman was, save for a handful too close to her to have been caught up in the two bridges. kanaya stood firm where she was, holding the portals open, then glanced back at laura. ]
I won't be able to retrieve her from here, I'll require your assistance with the follow-through, if you don't mind.
[ all the while, the monsters closed in on where kanaya was standing. this fact didn't terribly bother her. ]
no subject
[She didn't even slow as Kanaya did her portal thing, though she made a mental note to ask about it later. She hurled herself into the suddenly empty space, slashing downwards along one of the remaining creatures from head to leg, and then kicking it into another and sending them both toppling.]
Here, now!
[This was shouted at the terrified woman, who just stood there though in shock, and Laura let out a hiss as she moved to intercept another of the creatures.]
no subject
she bares her fangs at the nearest one before it swats her away, and her hold loosens a moment as she flies through the air. she manages to recover quickly enough to regain her grip, however, and kicks another attacker in the head before it gets closer. unfortunately, she's still surrounded, so she has little recourse but to grin and bear it when a massive, armored newcomer slips through and wraps a tentacle around her ribs.
its grip is crushing, and the pain as she hears what must be her bones grinding is excruciating, but she will not let go of those threads, no matter what her arms could be instead doing for her own defense ]
no subject
[She hissed in frustration, turning, and in two steps she had grabbed the woman.]
Come with me or die.
[She practically hauled her along by the wrist before she could even complain, and as soon as they were clear of the portal corridor she was chopping her way through the creatures that had gathered in the interim with her free hand. She stabbed one through the spine, and shoved it into two more with her foot, sending the three tumbling and clearing a space for her to drag the woman through.]
[And then she let go of their rescuees hand and threw herself into the air, the claws on both her feet arcing out as she tumbled forward, slashing through the tentacles that held Kanaya...right around the large creature's shoulders.]
no subject
she meant to open another to get the civilian across the river, but all this crushing was beginning to affect bloodflow and she couldn't think so clearly, so she instead worked her hands around the tentacle so she could try her best to rip it apart, but she had terrible leverage for such a maneuver.
luckily, within a few moments, the whole arm collapsed and she was able to squirm her way out easily, but had some trouble supporting her own weight. she decided then that it might be prudent to make a quick snack of the same arm that held her as she opened a portal across the river.
she shouted to their wayward innocent: ] Quickly! It's imperative that you get to safety!
no subject
[Which left Laura with a separate problem, watching the troll girl attempting to rescue someone while barely being able to stand.]
It is time to leave.
[There was little room for argument in her voice, not so much because of the fact that she wasn't expecting one, but for the fact that as she said it, she was grabbing Kanaya under the arms and lifting her bodily off the ground. Laura might have been tiny, but she was mostly muscle.]
[And then she was racing them both towards the portal, probably getting there a moment or two after their would-be rescuee.]
no subject
she broke free of laura's hold and tumbled to the ground, letting out a low growl as she tried to force herself to her feet. ]
You can feel free to retreat as you will, but if you expect me to follow, you'll find yourself to be most deeply mistaken. Moreover, I would very much appreciate if certain individuals would kindly cease to deprive me of my source of nourishment at the times when I find myself in direst need of it!
no subject
You can barely stand. If you fall back, recover, and return, then you're still useful. If you fight until you drop and die, you've accomplished nothing because the battle continues regardless.
[She released her grip with another little growl, half-turning to face the monsters that were regrouping to charge the two teenagers again. She didn't turn far though...if Kanaya tumbled again, Laura would probably grab her to keep her upright.]
no subject
[ she stumbles for a few steps before deciding that her legs are probably not going to get her where she needs to be, so she grabs a handful of threads and twists them around until she drops onto one of the beasts from above, ready to sink her teeth into it ]
no subject
[Her attention is momentarily diverted by a pair of the creatures lunching at her, and once they were dispatched green eyes twisted back to find Kanaya...biting one of the monsters.]
Is drinking the blood of demons a good idea?
no subject
Perhaps not if you;re seeking something flavorful, as the one had by these is deeply unpleasant. And yet, it still works to the desired effect.
no subject
[Laura had no idea how a vampire functioned, or an alien vampire, but she doubted drinking the blood of evil nameless monstrosities from the realm of classical horror could be without its downsides.]
no subject
[ she'll just have to deal with the resulting indigestion later ]
