DRAIN YOU OF YOUR SANITY
WHO: The Emissary and co. versus everybody
WHERE: Off the coast of Battery Park and throughout the City
WHEN: Just before midnight October 31st (technically November 1st)
WARNINGS: Violence and frightening imagery
SUMMARY: Drawn by Illidan’s magic, a demon from beyond reality has come forth to help the Betrayer doom the world. The battle that saves or destroys everything has begun. Happy Halloween, Cityverse!
FORMAT: Paragraph to start, whatever works after.
It came.
The Moon of midnight on All Hallow’s Eve shone wetly on the waters of the City’s Harbour. From beneath the surface a rumbling could be heard, as though emanating far, far below, within abyssal depths and ancient fathoms that could not possibly be there. First there was a ripple, then a wave, then the creature began to arise from the waters. It slid upwards and upwards, rising smoothly and continuously out of the ocean like a living edifice, a vast Thing ancient and immovable, a walking island sunken no longer. The head then the shoulders then the wings then the misshapen body came forth, yet still more of Its bulk remained beneath the waters, with slow thighs beginning to move It towards the City. All around it the sky and the ocean seemed to darken with an almost positive quality, as though jet-black ink was spilling into the universe itself. The Emissary had come.
Water flowed off Its body in torrents, mixing with drool and ichor. An unending series of sickly slopping and slobbering noises came from the twitching forest of tentacles around Its mouth, the product of a ravening hunger. The ocean heaved immensely around the Titan form, waves thrashing from the power of Its body. How to describe such a thing? How to even conceive of such horror, outside of madness or nightmare? That immense octopus head crowning the terrible body, those dragon-bat wings sprouting from Its back, those rubbery, sea-green scales, the mingled and loathsome aspects of the reptile, the mollusc- and the human! For it was on two feet that It moved, and with two arms did the Emissary reach out toward the morsels It slavered for.
An aura of panic and despair announced It, greater than any herald’s trumpet. Merely to look upon that incomprehensible shape and its alien geometry was to gamble with one’s sanity. Its very presence emanated a sense of immeasurable insignificance and absence of meaning, as though all the Earth was plankton in the presence of a whale. It moved with a shambling, unwholesome motion that had nothing to do with clumsiness, gathering speed. A mountain walked or stumbled! Toward the City, toward the Well. Toward the end of the world.
[ooc: goddamndoomchat is open on AIM if anyone's interested! There are some people fighting the Emissary who have not been slotted into threads yet; we will work those out as we go along! The raid against Illidan in Central Park will be posted by Jill later. Have fun everybody!]

"So you're making sure people get out to the evacuation sites. Do you need help?" Since she didn't have enough paper to make another phoenix yet.

"How are you on roofs?"
no subject
She pointed toward the doorway. The paper man shifted a little, to hold it steady. "Ma'am, I'm a professional bodyguard. I can't move until you go through that door." She paused, still so very serious. "Unless you would prefer I pick you up and carry you."
no subject
"Just this once, but I can more than take care of myself. It's sort of a requirement which I'm sure you know since you seem to know Cass."

Maggie followed Batgirl once she went through . "Yes. She and I met through the Birds of Prey. I know you're capable," Maggie said honestly, as the girl obviously carried herself in a way that showed good combat training. "I never said you weren't. But I have to do what I'm trained to."
Maggie pointed. "There's more residences down that street. I haven't checked it yet for civilians or paper."

She made her way up the street. Any possible papery thing they passed she sucked up into her sleeves. Something hadn't been discussed yet. "I'm Maggie, by the way."
One building ahead of them looked like it had its lower levels hit pretty bad by passing monsters on their way to ground zero. If someone was on the upper levels, they might be too afraid to go down, and the fire escape looked rickety.

She noticed the nicking of paper as they went along and raised an eyebrow. "Paper klepto or Porter ability?"
no subject
"If I have enough paper, I can make a bird capable of carrying up to 10 people and flying at airplane speeds," she explains very matter of factly. "But since I've been evacuating people all week, I'm out."
no subject
"I have, uh, a belt full of crap and really great upper body strength which means you're my new best friend if we need a carryout. How much paper are we talking?"
no subject
"For the full size creature, I need at least two cases' worth, or a small room full of books. Just to carry one or two people, I can make a smaller one and... well, I can carry them, while it carries me. I probably have enough for that now."
She looked up at the building they approached, eying windows for lights (if the power was out someone might still have lanterns or flashlights) and also for what was the safest way to get in.

"Maybe we should split up, in case one mode of entry is better. If you can take the walls, I can take the stairs. If anything's unstable on the inside, I can shield myself with the paper. Whoever gets there first starts prepping them for evac."

Steph pulls out her grappling gun and nods. "See you there."

Maggie goes to what she thinks is the door to where Steph saw the figures and knocks loudly. "This is - uh... Maggie," she trails off lamely, but then adds more firmly, "I'm here to help." She listens at the door, then tries at opening it.
no subject
"We have an elderly couple and their grandson. How are the stairs?"
Sorry, been hiatusing
She looks at the frightened grandmother, who is hugging her grandson to her side. "Ma'am, could I please have those newspapers?"
The old man looks at Batgirl. "We got a girl in a costume and a girl who wants newspapers. Are you two crazy?"
NP BB!
Grabbing a blanket she holds out a hand to help the elderly woman up. "Fire escape is good to go, but we should hurry."
no subject
"That's so cool!" The boy emotes.
"I'll show you something cooler when we get to the roof," Maggie promises, and lifts him up to climb through to the fire escape.
"Sir, do you have medications you'll need with you?" She asks grandpa, knowing things like heart medication and the like are bad to be skipped.
The man pauses, frowns about young people assuming old people needing medication, then grumbles. With as much speed as arthritic knees will allow, he goes into the bedroom, and comes out with a toiletries bag a few moments later. She offers him a hand to go through the window. "We're coming out," she gives the heads up to Batgirl, to explain the delay.

The way to the top wasn't far but it felt like forever. Maggie was impressed that Batgirl had been helping others like this all day--the whole atmosphere was so... well, apocalyptic, and it would be hard to sort through all the places to find people. When they made it to the top, Maggie handing the boy up to Batgirl before she came up last. "I was thinking," she said to Batgirl, "I probably would have passed by here without thinking anyone was still here. Thank you very much."
Not just for seeing them, but reminding her that there was no point in looting paper for birds if she didn't find people to evacuate.
She walked to the center of the roof, and told the family to stand as close to her as they could. She nodded at Batgirl. "I'll take them now. But thank you very much. And good luck." She spread her arms, then paused. "You'd better stand back."

"Hey, I'm all about team-ups, so no worries on my part. See you around, Maggie!"

Random paper whorls about in the back draft, and one small card (http://pics.livejournal.com/origamiguardian/pic/00001chh) flies toward Steph.
