SUMMARY: This log is forever open to fraternize, socialize, and otherwise eat pie in Ned's restaurant. Extra notes for November:
- There will be a Thanksgiving hosted here, but I will make a separate log post for it.
- There is now a lifesize cardboard cutout of Han Solo outside, feel free to notice/comment on it!

Open, during a Saturday

Calvin is here for a brownie to celebrate the fact that it's Saturday and he's free from school! At least for now- he does have a lot of homework for the weekend that he really ought to get started on avoiding. But for now, he's going to have a brownie and then head off to work on a certain special project outside of school that's contained within the empty shoebox beside him.

Wait.

Calvin pauses in mid-chew, swallows, frantically checks the box, then feels his eyes getting very big and his heart getting very low in his chest. The box is completely empty, and the Pie Hole's Saturday is about to get a lot more interesting.

"Hey, everybody!" Calvin calls out to the entire shop, waving. "I might have lost something. If anyone sees something, um, odd running around, let me know, okay!"

"Oh, and you might want to tuck your pants into your socks."

WHY IS EVERYONE PROSING. slowly replies

"How odd?" Ned calls from just behind the kitchen door, leaning back to look out nervously. Ears like a hawk, this one. He walks out and sets down Calvin's plate with a clatter, glancing around his beautiful tile floors for anything amiss. "Not alive-odd, I hope."

And then Digby barks. Ned gulps, looking to Calvin apprehensively for guidance.

BECAUSE THE PIE HOLE DESERVES OUR BEST

Calvin doesn't respond at first. He just tucks his pants into his socks, then draws his legs up away from the floor, onto his seat. He's looking around, scanning the ground.

"Don't make any sudden movements," he says. "I'm pretty sure it sees motion as prey. Oh, and I've been trying to train it so that it can smell fear." Calvin puts the shoebox on the table in front of him, beside the brownie, its lid off. Inside is a ragged tumble of grass, leaves, dirt, and shredded newspapers. He looks up at Ned.

"Hey, you've got the number for poison control around here, right?"

"P-p-poison control?" he asks, eyes flying wide. "Should I be calling animal control instead?"

Digby barks again and Ned sighs, motioning for Calvin to follow him. No one disturbs his kitchen, okay. No one.

"Look, all I'm saying is that there are a lot of calls you might want to make right now."

There was a soft kapwing noise as Calvin levitated into the air and softly floated after Ned, using his flight powers to avoid touching a floor that, as far as he was concerned, might as well be made of lava. He carried the shoebox with him. And his brownie.

Ned's eyes widen but he doesn't react otherwise, watching very carefully where he steps, leading Calvin into the kitchen and snagging a rolling pin off the counter.

"Hey!" Calvin is immediately perturbed. "You're not going to squoosh it are you? Have you got any idea how long it's taken to feed and train that thing? And talk about hard to catch!" He flies protectively in front of Ned. "I was almost ready to release it in the school, too! You can't squish it now!"

"But it's poisonous. You do realize the Health Department could have me shut down." Not that a small child would care about these things. Sigh. "Did you say the school?"

Incorrect, Ned. The prospect of his brownie and pie source being shut down is something Calvin cares a great deal about. "What?! They can't do that! It's not your fault it got loose!"

He catches himself, still hovering. "Not that it's my fault either, or anything. It's just one of those things that can't be avoided! Like a lightning strike!"

Yeah, he's just going to gloss over the school part, there.

Ned sees a shadow out of the corner of his eye and lunges, but there's nothing there. At least, not that he can see. "What were you doing with a venomous insect on your person, Calvin?" The overly calm tone really should be telling, here. Ned doesn't deal with anger well.

"Well, to be technical it's not really classified as an insect. It's more of an arthropo-YAAAGH!" Calvin flew straight up into the ceiling as something very fast and very skittery darted across the floor beneath him. Terror loosened his tongue.

"I was training it! I caught the biggest centipede ever during summer and I was trying to make it as big and mean as possible! It was going to be my pet monster and I would use it to unleash a reign of terror!" He was wailing now, giving full reign to his melodrama. "How could it have possibly gone wrong?!"

"H--aghh," Ned let out a frightened sound, leaping into the countertop and doubtlessly bruising himself. So much for being the adult. "I won't even dignify that with a response."

But after a beat Ned is trailing after the creature, trying to locate it before it flees back into his restaurant, rolling pin held high.

The bug's legs were a blur as it ran. Whatever the thing was, it was darting straight out the door and into the City, loosed on an unsuspecting world. Calvin hovered in the doorway and watched it go, hoping that it would evade Ned's wrathful rolling pin.

"Go! Run! Be free!" He yelled. "We'll see each other again someday!" Calvin looked down sadly at the empty shoebox he was carrying. "I hope."

Ned let out a long sigh of relief and bolted the kitchen door behind the critter. Running a hand through his hair, he set the rolling pin back down on the counter and peeked at Digby out of the corner of his eye to make sure he was alright before trying to settle the matter of Calvin within himself. He had never been good at discipline, and children were so beyond his scope he'd never even considered the possibility of--well, anything like this. Having been forced to become an adult himself at age nine had certainly not likened him to children who are even slightly more normal.

"Calvin..." he began crossly, but he wasn't the boy's father. He wasn't anyone. What could he really say?

"I know, I know," Calvin said as he went to sit back down with his brownie. "As a good proprietor, you're so sorry for all this trouble and the loss of my property that you're going to give me my next item free, right?"

Don't worry, Ned. You may not know what to say, but Calvin does.

He sighs to let go of some of his pent up anger and just nods. "That's right." But no. He needed to put his foot down. He just, was famously bad at knowing where to put it. "As long as you sign something promising never to bring anything living inside the Pie Hole but yourself."

There. That sounded firm-ish.

"Sign something, huh?" Calvin took a moment to count the possible loopholes and found many. "That sounds completely fair! I can do that, no problem!"

There were after all a great many things a kid could do with dead bugs...

Guess who is not very happy about this. It's not very hard to guess correctly.

"Um, excuse me. But what sort of thing have you lost?" Shirley pries, piling on her super sweet voice in order to get all the information out of him. She's not going to let him scare away customers.

Oh hey it's Brownie Lady! Calvin is naturally inclined to cooperate with the one who introduced him to the Pie Hole.

"Well, I don't know the exact name of the species," he said as he climbed up on the table to be safe. "But if you see something long and creepy with a lot of legs and poisonous pincers moving really fast across the floor, don't get in its way."

Here comes a glare that could melt steel.

"So this thing has got a lot of legs and its poisonous. Did you really think bringing it into a restaurant was the best idea?" she questions, attempting to maintain eye contact at all times. "Because if I find this thing somewhere I don't want it, there's going to be trouble for you."

Calvin cannot face the glare, and immediately busies himself looking at the floor for his escaped experiment/pet/threat to civilization. "I didn't mean for it to escape!" He protests. "The box was supposed to be secure! I guess it's just gotten stronger than I expected." He frowns.

"Uh, what kind of places would count as somewhere you don't want it, exactly? Just speaking hypothetically."

"If it gets anywhere near a customer, then you're not going to be eating here for a long time." Shirley warns, before deciding it's high time to search for the thing. Whatever it was.

"Now, how big is it?" Her tone is significantly more friendly now that the warning is out of the way. The Pie Hole isn't very busy at this point in time, so she doubts that it will cause too much trouble.

Calvin gulps, then holds his fingers about pencil-length apart. A large pencil. Shirley has just secured his complete and unconditional cooperation. He wants to save the thing if he can, but he wants to keep having brownies more. "It likes dark places," he adds, trying to be helpful.

"Like under tables?" she pries, clearly unimpressed. "I think Ned keeps a flashlight somewhere around here- Why don't you go find it for me?"

"Yeah... under tables..." Calvin can immediately see why that is going to be a problem considering the whole customers issue, and feels the need to get away from Shirley's glare. "Sure, I'll get it right away!"

He flies up and through the shop and starts noisily ransacking drawers behind the counter. He's rushing, and receipts fly into the air and pens clatter onto the floor before he pops up waving a flashlight. "I found one! Is this it?"
