Walking into the bar is like walking into a wide open room, but the dimmed lights never seem to be bright enough to catch every detail in one swoop. To the far right wall is the bar, and a long bar it is, with bartenders lining it spaced by about five feet or so in between. Nobody actually sits at the bar, of course. The bartenders are there to make drinks for the servers. While both the bartenders and server girls wear tuxedos, the women's are made for the intent to actually catch the eye, of course. Fishnets replace slacks, dressshirts cut much lower than necessary, and tophats on each woman's head. They grin, and flirt, and make their way, but the moment a hand drifts too far, there's the legion of bouncers who line the walls, watching for any infraction. The Penguin is, after all a chauvenist, but he is no pig.

The middle of the wide area is devoted to tables, an endless sea of white clothed tables, each one a unique and different ice sculpture in the center. Each one unique, lit from beneath with a light that lets an almost wet light radiate from each table.

And of course to the left is the stage, performers that never cease to move, or sing, or whatever is up for the next part of the night. Breaks between each are sparse, quick, and the music never becomes too loud. And the stage, it is lined with penguins. A bit of irony, perhaps, but Penguin wouldn't begrudge his prior career as a gotham rogue. Perhaps he even reveled in the reminder. Out there for everyone to see.

Regardless, there would be no grand plots or schemes tonight. Just a party.

[Zatanna's here for the networking, or so she says. Really, she's here because she likes parties and maybe she was looking for an excuse to take her mind off of the past few weeks (months?) and what better way to do it than with a glass of champagne in hand?

Her dress is catered to a high-end event like this, but as always, she can't help but add a little something that references her occupation (in this case, a pair of rabbit earrings). She's hovering near a table, but not sitting down; there's a half-finished drink in her hand. She's giving off a pretty approachable vibe, so why not come and say hello?]

[It's always as if they're going to run into each other in a place like this. A classic play, Cross asks what she's drinking and comes over with a refill.]

Seems it would be a shame if you had an empty glass.

That's very kind of you, but I saw you flirting with Selina and you'll have to work harder and be more inconspicuous if you want to find out what I'm wearing under this dress. [She takes the glass, however.]

Flirting? No, I was merely providing company. [he moves to lean against the bar before leaning in.] If I was flirting, I'd reach for her hand - [he does so] a move to kiss it like a true Englishmen would. I would say, "my how lovely you look tonight, Mistress Zatanna. Circe herself would be jealous."

Yes, yes. Of course you were. [She looks at him, something between amused and annoyed, though not entirely unwelcoming of it (she'd just pull her hand away and punch him, if that were the case).] First off, you're rather lucky that she isn't here. Circe's not the kindest of women. And, second of all, you'll have to tell me where to find these "true Englishmen," as my prior experience has never involved that, even in jest.

I'm not exactly Odysseus material, I think I'll be okay. [He would have kissed it, but he lets it go before offering her a shrug.] Maybe, or maybe I'm just used to saying it. [Who knows???]

She just likes to screw with people for no reason. It's one of her things. [She's Diana's villainess, however, so she's pretty safe. And it's a good thing he let go. She's more comfortable with little gestures that aren't meant to impress.] So what you're saying is that it's a line that usually works, huh? Hate to be the one to screw up your record, there, but I call bullshit. Save the smooth talk for someone that's easily seduced by things like that.

[She appears a little disinterested. Sure, he's good-looking, but certainly not the first guy this evening to come up beside her and try to chat her up.]

You don't waste time. [She swirls her glass and takes a sip. Oh. She's playing hard to get.]

Maybe. Every time I think I have, I hear something new.

[She peers to the side. Something about a guy with scars...] I haven't seen you around before tonight. [She's trying to appear disinterested, waiting for him to offer information instead of asking for it outright.]

So you aren't an imPort, then. [But he's cute, so.] That's what you're meant to do if you'd like to remain in my presence, yes. Otherwise in a minute or two I'll pretend to see someone I know and excuse myself.

[ When he spots Zee from across the room, Thomas hems and haws for a considerable amount of time, as is kind of expected. One one hand, it wouldn't hurt to say hello. On the other, looking like this? Well. Anyway, he's eventually slowly meandering up to her. ]

Uh. [ Adjusting his bow tie a little, he gives a smile. Awkward. ] Hi.

[It honestly takes her a moment to realize who she's looking at. There's a moment of silence as she studies him, but it's not at all judgmental and certainly not disgusted. With the way he's acting she can only assume that whatever happened to him wasn't exactly... something he wanted. He's not usually shy. She sets her glass down and decides to cross the distance, placing a gentle hand on his shoulder, tilting her head up to offer a small peck on the cheek.]

Hello. [And she pulls away, but remains close. More for his sake than her own.] Should I ask about the elephant in the room or would you prefer I pretend that everything's as it should be?

[ The sudden proximity and touch comes, honestly, as a bit of a surprise. But a little quirk comes to his lips as he leans in to the peck, stays close to her when it's gone. Tilting his head to the side, it's his human eye that's primarily facing Zee. ]

We can talk about it. [ A tiny shrug, but he struggles with continuing. ] Denial can't fix it, you know?

No, it can't. [She crosses an arm under her chest, wrapping it around her frame; it isn't defensive in the slightest. She holds out one hand, gesturing a little as she talks.] A bit of not-so-eloquently spoken magic might, though. Depending.

Oh. [ At those words, he's immediately perking up and leaning in. Keen and hopeful, bright. ] Depending on what?

If it works or not. My magic is near-limitless, but this place sets up a wall for it. [More obnoxious gesturing; she can't help it.] To make a long story short, because of how it works and how my magic is not defined by something like "elemental," or "protection," or whatever, I usually need to try something before I can figure out if it works. I don't want to, you know, be that asshole that offers you false hope, but I'm certainly willing to put all my effort into trying.

[With that she allows her arm to return to her side and with the other, she takes the glass again and gulps down the second half in a very unladylike manner. Clearing her throat, she grins.] It's up to you, of course.

[Oh well look at this it's a person she totally doesn't know at all hiding behind a disguise she definitely didn't make. Maybe he's a fan or something.]

Pardon me, but I could swear I've seen your face on posters about town.

[Why, who is this dashing stranger (who she has never seen even once before in her entire life)? She feels compelled to speak to him -- and at great length.]

You might've. Depends on who is asking and why.
