Friday evening is actually one of her favorites in the week. For one, it's the end of the work week, and means that tomorrow she gets to sleep away half the day if she wants to. (And she generally wants to.)

For two, it's one of two days she gets to go train under Scathach, which is increasingly becoming a highlight of ways to spend to her time. She's learning a lot, and while Scathach constantly pushes her to the very edge of her limits, the accompanying faith that Max can take it and experience she gains is more than worth it. And beyond that, Scathach is simply excellent company. Time spent with her always winds up being spent well. 

As always, she's at the dojo by 5.15, the fastest she can get there after work ends, already in her training clothes and ready to go. She doesn't want to waste any of Scathach's time, after all.

[Scathach was waiting in her customary full-lotus on the floor of the dojo, barefoot, wearing white shorts and a tank-top. Eyes closed, she heard Max approaching and smiled to herself. She had grown very fond of her student, and actually enjoyed her company quite a bit. And Max was a hard worker, an attribute which Scatty always appreciated when she found it.

As soon as Max entered the dojo, Scathach opened her eyes, smile widening a bit.]</small. Welcome.

[ She smiled back, ditching her bag by the door and heading over to where Scathach was. ]

Thank you. How are you today?

[The redhead didn't move--she didn't even blink. She simply watched Max approach, small smile still on her face.]

Decent. Just finished teaching a class a quarter of an hour ago. They're mildly competent.

[Implying that Max was more than that.]

[ She smiles at that, catching the implication, and sits down to begin stretching, a little warm-up first. ]

That's good. Better than incompetent, at least.

What are we working on tonight?

[symmachy]

[Scathach shifts to join her, rolling her shoulders before starting to stretch.]

Much better. And I hadn't planned anything. Any suggestions?

[Of course she had a back-up plan, but that was just in case Max didn't have any preferences.]

I was hoping we could do some more work on Eskrima today. I'd like to be better at using weapons instead of just my fists.

[ Fists weren't always effective enough. ]

[Scathach nods, and then stands to go to the back wall. There's a chest there, and she pulls some wooden sticks out of it.]

We'll start slow.

[ Max finishes her initial warm ups and then stands to walk over to Scathach, taking a pair of the sticks. ]

Okay, cool.

[Scathach twirls the sticks around her fingers, and takes her place in the center of the dojo.]

Eskrima was practiced in the Philippines, but it came originally from Spain. It is a very elegant style, and good for the islands because the people there prefer blades to guns.

[ Max moves to stand opposite her, listening attentively, testing the feel of the sticks in her hands. ]

It has a lot of disarming techniques involved, I've read.

[She nods, rolling her shoulders.]

It is often used as more of a defensive technique than an offensive one.

That's one of the biggest reasons I'm interested in it. I've been watching some videos of it - it's surprisingly versatile for a defensive technique.

[ She's not going to make the first move here. Trying to stay aware of everything. ]

[Scatty nods, picking up the hint. She pauses for just a moment, and then (not at her top speed), leaps forward and casually swings one of the sticks out at Max while the other attempts a stab.]

[futurebatwoman]

[ She forcibly shuts off the part of her brain that wants her to use it and blocks one blow, sliding out of the way of the other and trying to trap one of Scathach's sticks between two of hers. ]

Good.

[Since this is a teaching exercise, Scathach lets Max catch her stick.]

Now try to disarm me.

[futurebatwoman]

[ She steps in at the same time as she pulls to give her more momentum. It closes the range between her and Scathach's other hand, but that also means she's too close for a hard hit. Hopefully.

She twists, trying to use that and the momentum to yank the stick from Scathach's grasp. ]
