WHERE: Bars all around the City, and the occasional back alley or two.

SUMMARY: Tonks asked Kurt out to dinner.
FORMAT: Action!

[ Tonks arrives at the Institute at five minutes before seven. She reaches up and smooths out her magenta-colored hair and then exhales a breath. There's nothing to be nervous about. It's just dinner! She likes Kurt. They're mates. It doesn't have to be anything more than that, she tells herself so there's really no reason to be nervous.

When she is done talking to herself, Tonks enters the Insitute proper. After going through what security measures there are, she finds herself on the other side of Kurt's door.

Knock! Knock! Knock! ]

[ Ah, well. She was certainly punctual. You can't fault anybody for that. Kurt slips into a jacket and quickly debates whether he ought to squeeze his feet into shoes, deciding on 'no', before opening the door with a slightly apologetic smile for the pause. ]

'Evening, Dora. How's it going?

[ He called her Dora. ]

Wotcher Kurt.

[ Tonks smiles. Don't worry about the shoes Kurt. They are going someplace that is a bit casual. ]

I'm great. What about you?

Just fine, thank you.

[ Great. Ready to go, then. He closes the door behind him and starts down the hallway. ]

Are we within walking distance, or are we teleporting?

[ Because they can both do that. How convenient. ]

I'm glad to hear it.

[ Tonks walks beside him. ]

I thought I'd apparate us both to Union Square and we could walk the rest of the way.

Sounds good.

[ He isn't sure how apparation works, so... ]

Do we need to be outside for that, or is it an anywhere sort of ability?

I can do it from anywhere. Well, most places that haven't had any protective charms set up. I do have to hold onto your arm though.

Interesting, and simple enough.

[ He offers his arm, hoping somewhere in the back of his mind that her form of teleporting isn't something that's secretly horrific. ]

[ It's not the destination that's horrific, however, apparition itself might be. Ask Sherlock. He was nearly sick.

Tonks links her arm around his. She smiles. ]

Brace yourself.

[ And away they go! Bang! ]

[ Oh, yes. That was fairly dizzying; different from what he was used to in an uncomfortable way. Granted, it's over in an instant. He has to look around to make sure everything right-side up, though. ]

Well. That is... Odd and squeeze-y, but here we are. Good show.

You're not going to be sick are you? Some people are after their first time apparating.

Oh, no. I'm fine.

[ He's determined to be perfectly okay, because he's a teleporter, and he should be used to any similar situation. ]

Which way are we off to, then?

I made reservations at Max Brenners. You said you weren't giving up chocolate and since then, I've been having a terrible craving. I don't know how I made it through the day to be honest.

Well, we will happily solve your problem, then.

[ Lead on, Tonks. You can keep his arm. ]

It's too bad most problems can't be solved this easily, yeah?

[ Tonks will do that! And they walk... ]

How are things at the Institute?

They could be better. Hank is still gone, and we've recent had a rather unfortunate incident, an attack... I suppose I should be glad nothing's exploded just yet.

[ He's not too keen on going into more detail than that. It was more than 'unfortunate,' and, though he'd hate to admit he was ignoring it as best he could, he was trying to push it form his mind more and more. Anyway... ]

What about you? All of these goings-on lately with the police force...

It sounds like your week was rubbish. I'm not very handy with most household spells but if you need any help restoring anything, let me know Kurt. It wouldn't be any trouble to pitch in and help.

Has the school ever exploded before?

[ Oh, Tonks. What you don't know. ]

Oh, well. Things could definitely be better. Ever since Jack was arrested...

[ Tonks frowns. She wants her boss back. ]

It's doesn't feel like it's the same force that I was first hired in to, d'you know what I mean?

[ He nods solemnly at the offer. It's something he'll keep in mind. ]

I'm surprised that we have had this one for so long, really.

[ It's kind of a joke, but there's a ring of truth to it. Then he considers the police force, which is something that he doesn't know too much about, but that feeling of rapid change, alienation... ]

Yes. I can understand that. I think it must be the sort of thing everybody feels, at some point.

Really?

[ Bar the occasional mishap in Potions or Charms, Hogwarts has never exploded completely. ]

I thought about quitting and finding something else but then I'd be leaving Seras and everyone else that's decent by themselves. I don't really mind what people say about me but with all the firings and arrests, I don't think I can.

[ Besides. There is remarkably little else that she's trained for in The City. ]

Guilt does it, then? You do not want to leave your colleagues behind? I suppose that is understandable. I hope you will not let that undermine your happiness, however. Liking what you do is important.

Yeah, that's it a bit. It's probably not the best reason to stay, I'll admit.

[ Tonks makes a face. ]

I loved being an Auror. Here it's all different. There are more rules and more laws. Which is great, in a way. I think the Ministry could learn a thing or two.

I cannot say much about that, having not met this Ministry of yours... Perhaps just give it time? Allow things to cool, and then do what you feel is right.

To be honest, you're better off not knowing the Ministry. I'm not saying that everyone who works for them is awful but they do like to think of a body as guilty first.

It's good advice, Kurt. I'll just have to wait, you're right.

[ Tonks smiles. This conversation has gotten a bit deep. Let's turn it around. ]

Have you thought about putting on another show at the Institute?

[ Fair enough. ]

There is something every semester. This time it will be smaller, however. I've had less time to dedicate to my individual classes. It is not a big deal.

I thought it might take your students minds off of the recent troubles you said you were having.

[ They are almost at the restaurant. ]

[ He shrugs, pressing his mouth into a line for a quick moment. ]

It is what it is. It's too late to change it now.

[ This it? Let him get the door. ]

I suppose.

[ Tonks smiles when Kurt opens the door. ]

Thank you.

[ And soon, through the magic of narration, they are seated at a table for two. Tonks picks up a menu. ]

Well, Kurt, what are we going to do? Are we going to be sensible and have dinner first or shall we start with desert?

I vote for the sensible route, if only because I haven't eaten dinner in anticipation of this being dinner.

[ It made sense to him, at least. ]

Sensible, it is. This time at least. Next time, I'll try for the unsensible option.

[ She browses over the offerings. ]

What d'you think you'll have?

Well, since we're making it a point to leave plenty of room for dessert... Something like. One of these sandwiches, I suppose.

[ They sound like good sandwiches. ]

I'm definitely trying the chocolate chips, french fries I mean. That's not cheating. It's mostly potatoes, yeah?

You're going to feel dreadful later, eating so much sugar.

[ Somebody has healthy habits, yes sirree. ]

I'll have you know I survived my Auror training by having a healthy diet consisting mostly of chips, thank you very much.

[ And sometimes meals that her mother would leave for her. ]

Or maybe I'll have the macaroni and cheese. It has bacon. Everything's better with bacon, yeah?

That seems to be a general rule, yes. [ He's not so sure...] It seems like more of a meal than fries, at any rate.

[ Welp. Tonks knows what she wants to order. She puts down the menu and waits. It's time to play twenty questions. ]

I know that you like to perform but what else do you do when you're not teaching at the Institute?

Plenty of things, though none of it's particularly exciting, you know. I go to the movies, to church... There's the occasional bad-guy bashing. All of the standard fare for the City.

[ In summation. Now that he considers it, he doesn't know too much about Tonks, either. That's what these sorts of outings are for, though. ]

What's church like?

[ Tonks is the most interested in that. It's the one that is the most foreign to her. ]

A bit of the same, minus the church. I've been watching a lot of movies and listening to music. Oh, roller coasters. I've recently [ recently being her time in the City ] discovered them.

I'm also trying to learn a bit more about forensics. Sherlock's been helping me there.

[ He shrugs, pausing for a moment because he's not really sure how to describe church. ] It is fine. I like it. I'm sure everybody has their own opinions on the matter, but the routine and the thought behind it are both things that I find comforting.

[ He gets a bit of a grin out of the idea that roller coasters are something of a hobby for her, and forensics..? That's easy enough to converse about. ]

Oh? I'm sure that's interesting. Rather useful, as well, to what you do.
