[ with prom coming, kanaya couldn't help being excited. it had been one of her first positive experiences on arriving in the city, so she wanted to try to engender the same experience in others. their household could probably use the money, too, though ron's curios and both her and terezi's employment at the magazine has been enough to help them live comfortably, it never hurt to have more for a rainy day.

[Vriska can think of at least eight things she would rather be doing than standing in her hive being fitted for a stupid dress for this prom thing. She wouldn't really mind that much if it weren't for who had shown up on her doorstep unannounced to make it. She hadn't even asked Kanaya for a dress. But here they were.

A growl bubbles up from her throat as she levels Kanaya with a Look.]

This is completely stupid and unnecessary, why are you even here?

As a favor to a friend. Who, I should note, isn't you.

[ she sets her supply bag down and pulls a measuring tape out, then motions with the other hand for vriska to turn around ]

Now, if you would please.

I'm so hurt. What a surprise! It's not like I could figure that out on my own or anything.

[She stands there defiantly for a few minutes before snorting.]

Ugh, whatever.

[There's only one reason that she turns around and scoops her hair up into a messy bun so it's out of the way for the fitting. That reason is that she doesn't want to disappoint John, and also because she doesn't actually have a dress for this dance.]

There's little point in overestimating your capabilities when you do enough of that for the both of us!

[ she takes a deep breath and remembers this is for john. she is a good and helpful friend and the bigger, more mature person here and she is making vriska a dress to prove it. no one can beat kanaya maryam in a help-off or a mature-off, she's simply the best there is.

and so, as she brings the tape around vriska's waist, she only pulls it too tightly a little tiny bit. ]

[Yes, Kanaya is the bastion of maturity right here. Vriska glares over her shoulder, standing still and sucking in her stomach in a little so the measuring tape isn't as tight.]

Which is the very purpose, to provide a counteraction, and hopefully deflate your overindulged ego somewhat. It's the intersection of helium with a needle.

[ she lets in a little slack for a more accurate reading. after all, if the dress ends up cutting off any circulation or unevenly fit, it will reflect poorly on her work. it isn't like no one will know who made this dress. ]

[She turns back to stare forward, and then down at the ground. This is stupid. She doesn't want to have to put up with this shit.]

Oh, of course not. You are neither the cause or center of any problem whatsoever. They are entirely external and unrelated to any actions of yours that may be accused of such an association.

[ she straightens up and holds the tape level with vriska's armpits ]

Raise your arms.

[ there's some hesitation before she adds: ] ...Please.

You're the one with the problem with my ego. Don't try to pin the blame on me for that just because you don't like it.

[She considers being difficult, but the sooner she gets the over with, the sooner she can get back to a Kanaya free life. So she raises her arms, lips turned down into the moodiest frown.]

Or, as is almost certainly the case, I'm simply the only one who dares voice such issues to you directly.

[ kanaya's not really crazy about lingering with this one either, the position striking her as slightly awkward. it isn't getting any brighter behind you or anything, vriska. ]

[She snorts, shifting uncomfortably. Only uncomfortable from standing, not from Kanaya being here obviously.]

Can you hurry up? My arms are going to get tired.

[ the tape tightens slightly with a pinch, then loosens and is removed. ] Fine.

You might consider every now and then how never imagining the possibility of your failure may blind you from achieving success.

That's a shitty suggestion. Thinking about failure will just make you fail inevitably.

[She tilts her head to glance behind her, and- oh. There went her tarantula falling out of her hair and... right into Kanaya's. She doesn't even remember her crawling into it today.]

[ Aradia is just chillin' in Kanaya's magical mystery sewing den, hanging out like gal pals do. She is also poking into everything, and is currently playing with one of the kittens and a length of trim ]

[ kanaya's rushing about as she does once she gets into a groove, trying to stay out of the way of aradia's poking while still keeping on task. ]

You'll pardon my being preoccupied, I hope. It's been too long since we've simply spent recreational time together. [ partly because "recreational time" is nowhere to be found in her schedule ]

Hmm? Oh, no, don't worry about it! I figured you might need an extra pair of hands, but also I don't actually know how to sew? So let me know if you need me to, I don't know, hold something or run errands!

[ she nod towards the cat, but can't for the life of her remember which one that is. most of the names nepeta gave them were far too involved for her tastes. ]

Haha, I'm just keeping myself occupied! [ she crosses her legs, resting her chin on her hands ] So, who all are you making dresses for? Is everyone coming? I never got around to asking.

They're attending if I'm allowed any kind of input. I've already finished most of their outfits at this point.

[ she points to a few other mannequins that aren't quite as blatantly color-coded ] I've also taken a number of commissions to ensure that our classmates aren't insufficiently garbed.

[Cats Shinji could handle, but the rest of the clutter was making it hard for him to maneuver, and he's not really someone known for his amazing balance.

He trips over his own feet while trying not to run into a mannequin, sending the fabric he's carrying flying up in the air as he falls.

[ kanaya lets out a cringe, but instinctively snaps one of her space-threads and the fabric with it, leaving it to fall into her arms. draping it over her shoulder, she moves to lend him a hand to his feet. ]

Do try to be more careful, Shinji, you could hurt yourself.

Ohhhhh, but I've allowed this place to become such a horrendous mess, it's all quite gotten away from me a bit.

[Shinji takes her hand.] Thanks. Sorry about that. I'm fine, though! [And gets back off the floor, mentally beating himself up god so embarrassing]

There's not much you can do about it until prom's over and things calm down, I guess.

[ one of the cats comes up and rubs against her leg as she surveys the scene ]

That it has even come to this point is shameful. I should determine a method which produces a neater environment despite the volume I've found myself working at.
