There was nothing quite like a night on the town. The bright lights on the streets so far below, the wind through her hair as she swung between buildings, the sounds of late-night-early-morning traffic , and the ocassional girly screams of would-be muggers having their arms twisted by a chick in a black and purple cape.

Yes, this was the life. One of them, anyway.

[ Batgirl patrols the slightly less populated outskirts of the city, staying away from the places that already have more vigilantes around than they need. It’s a bit quieter out here, easier to hear what’s going on around her. And that’s really the key, when you don’t have a voice in your ear telling you exactly where you’re needed. ]

[ If she changed into her civilian clothes she could have made herself some waffles for a snack, but as it is she has to settle for a protein bar. Stephanie Brown has waffle powers, Batgirl does not. And that’s fine, really, all that sugar would probably make her sick anyway and there are hours yet until sunrise. ]

[ How had this started again? She tries to remember even as she throws the smoke bomb into the center of the group of kids. They were just kids, after all, none of them older than 20. When she had started watching it had just been two guys, a drug deal. Both had brought back-up, of course, but the based on the numbers it looked like the backup had brought some backup as well.

She only has a few seconds before they start shooting. Not enough time to disarm all of them, but she can damn well try. ]

[Bucky has a trouble with sleeping some nights— alright, most nights. Especially lately. And when he had trouble sleeping, he took a walk. Sometimes he took a ride, you could go just about anywhere for a couple of coins, here, and it seemed like a bit of a waste if you didn't get going sometimes. At least, that's what he told himself, to cover his restlessness. But walking around hadn't gotten old yet.

He didn't wear a costume, because it felt weird to wear one without Steve around. He wasn't looking for a fight, but he found one often enough anyway, City being what it was. One thing he'd never, ever run into, though: a lady mask-type eating what looked, from his squinty-distance, like a candy bar. So, he was gonna be all gallant, or swing for it, at least.]

Does it taste good?

[He says this from far away, at street level, so he's halfway shouting.]

[ At first she thinks he couldn't possibly be talking to her. But when she peers over the edge to where the voice came from, he was definitely looking straight at her.

Well, that was new. ]

I've had better? [ She's experimenting with brands. Protein bars seem to have no lower quality limit, so it's hit or miss. ]

Did you, uh, need something?

[Well no, he was just being a smartass, and now that she's asked, it's making him rethink himself.]

If I tell you my car's broke down, will you help fix it?

[Bucky did not really get the point of patrolling. Back in his day, &c. He always had missions handed to him, he never had to go out to find them.]

I could try, but I'd probably just make it worse.

[ She shrugs. Mechanics are totally beyond her, otherwise she might have been able to hold on to her moped a bit longer. ]

You know that's what they make phones for, right?

[ Nathan was gone again, which was another sore spot for Kate. He was one of the few she had no qualms about patrolling or hitching a ride with. But flying solo was something she had been trained for. It didn't take any effort to fall back into the pattern. It came almost natural for her when she was patrolling.

Repairs and detours aside, the nights were just the way they had always been in the City. Criminals weren't deterred for long and returned to breaking into stores, or selling drugs and weapons at the docks where they thought nobody would catch them. Places they felt safe and in control.

Kate liked to burst their bubble.

A quick run-in with some thugs at a jewelry store and a beatdown later, Batwoman exited as quietly as she had entered. Police were en route thanks to a tip off from the locals, so she had to move. ]

I don't got a phone on me. [Bucky knew cellphones existed, but it was another thing for him to buy one.]

[ Batgirl had been drawn to the scene by the sound of sirens. When she reached the scene, though, it was already too late. Well, that was nothing new. There were an awful lot of people on the job here. She'd have gone someplace less populated by heroes if she had anywhere else to go.

She watched the scene from the rooftops, keeping an eye on things to make sure the cops didn't need a hand with the clean up. ]

[ She points across the street to a pay phone. ]

Maybe it's time to invest. I'd offer to give you a ride but I don't fly. [ So, you know, she'd just be walking him home and that would be weird. ]

[ In a City full of vigilantes, criminals, and everything in between, there was always the odd feeling of being watched by someone (if not something).

She made her way up to the rooftops anyway, as she preferred to stay out of the sight of civilians and stopped about halfway. That was definitely another Bat.

Not one she recalled meeting. ]

You all need to start coming with name tags. [ Was it a joke? ]

[ Of course it was another Bat, sneaking around like that. How could she have ever thought otherwise. But the voice isn't really familiar to Steph, so she turns to see who it is.

Well what do you know. The one Bat she hasn't met not because of timeline shenanigans. ]

What, the bat on my chest and my sunny personality aren't enough? [ Although when Gage was new in town he couldn't figure out which Bat she was supposed to be. Weirdly enough. ]

Maybe I should write "girl" in the middle in big black letters. Think that would do it?

Oh, I don't actually— I don't have a car. This is New York.

I just didn't know if you would. We don't have people stalking about in costumes, where I'm from. Not like this.

No? Well then, welcome to the City. [ She kicks her legs out over the edge of the roof and glances towards some of the nearby shadows. ]

Most Bats aren't as talkative as I am, though. So consider this a special occasion.

I know. I met Batwoman.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say "met" is probably a strong word, there.

[ Kate had been aware there were at least two women running around as Batgirl, but that seemed like forever ago. Another time and place. She had never met them, so running into this one had her suspicious about whether or not she was using "girl" or "woman".

She had only briefly heard on the streets or in the news back in Gotham about a blond Batgirl. Maybe this was the one. ]

I'm not particularly close with the family. [ Which was true.

And with all the alternate universes... keeping up was a bit of a task here. ]

[He shrugs.] We fought Nazi vampires.

[Bucky broke his leg it was embarrassing.]

I've noticed. [ She laces her hands behind her back and smiles. She's heard stories about Batwoman, but she doesn't know who she is and they've never met. Being friendly and making nice aren't exactly on your typical Bat-Agenda, but Steph never really wanted to be a typical Bat anyway. ]

I wouldn't take it personally, they're not great when it comes to new people. Or, you know, anyone Batman didn't hand pick. [ Meaning the two of them, pretty much. ]

Somehow that seems worse than just regular old vampires.

I never get to fight any other kind.

[ For the first time in days, Kate smiled a little herself. ]

Haven't had a problem really. [ A thoughtful pause. ] Robin is the only one, anyway.
