There are extensive tables for hor d'oeuvres, small desserts, and champagne as well as an open bar. Room for dancing is obvious, flanked by a small group of musicians. And there are alcoves for the shy, the hiding, the amorous, the machinating, or the creeper lurking.

Absently, Yomiko lifted a finger to her lips in a gesture suggesting that she had lost herself to thought. For a brief moment, the image of a bumbling young woman disappeared; replaced by that of the gifted, deceptively canny agent of the Royal Library's Special Operations.

"It's certainly true that society's changed greatly, even over the last century...and even where I'm from, it's not very different. There's still a great deal of politics taking place, but it's much more concealed now due to the change in how social classes interact. I'm sure that this ball was formed for charity, but there's probably bigger machinations going on within it."

With that, the Agent of the Crown disappeared, replaced once more by the enthusiastic, bubbly librarian. "Ah. But that's just what I've read, anyway. It's really little more than book-based theory."
