It starts as a normal day for Kang. Well, normal in the City, at least. He wakes up, takes a shower, and eats breakfast before he heads for work. He thinks it's a little odd that he doesn't feel very hungry, but doesn't think much of it. He's sure it's nothing, and he'll get his appetite back by lunch.

[During lunch time, he takes one of his school books with him to study while he picks at a sandwich at a nearby restaurant. Again, he doesn't feel very hungry; he also finds it difficult to focus. Muttering a curse in Nerakese, he closes the book and leans over to put it back in his bag, and in the process, he knocks over his nearly full glass of water on to the floor by accident, hitting it with his arm. A louder curse escapes him as he checks to make sure it didn't get all over another patron or server.]

_{( Setting up camp in restaurants is a hobby of Monica's. She does it usually one afternoon a week, parking herself in a place that's crowded enough to make it a good source of information. Today was that day, and she was idly flipped through magazine and sipping iced tea when she noticed him. )}

Rough day?

[He looks up and smiles when he sees Monica. He's liked their conversations so far.]

It could be worse. I just can't seem to focus on things very well today.

[uzi]

The fact that you're trying already puts you ahead of the curve.

[governorkang]

I've never been the type to give up easily.

[A server shows up to clean the spill, and insists on doing it despite Kang's offer to clean it himself.]

How have you been?

[uzi]

_{( Monica scoots her chair over, not making an effort to help with the cleanup. )}

Same as ever, really. After Venezuela, things have been tame around here. For most of us, at least.

[governorkang]

Something will happen soon enough It's just how things work in this place.

[He's resigned himself to that fact.]

[uzi]

There's no use in getting complacent. _{( She nods, mulling something over. )}

But you also need the good days, so when the bad ones come you can deal with them.

[governorkang]

[Kang blinks, and smiles.]

I knew I liked you for a reason.

[uzi]

_{( Monica swallows her smile by pursing her lips and angling her head down. She doesn't take compliments very well. )}

Well, that's your call, I suppose.

[governorkang]

You're sensible. I don't find many humans that are.

[He notices the reaction, but doesn't say anything about it.]

[uzi]

No, humans tend to run to two traits: pride and selfishness. Neither of these are tempered much by logic or sense.

[governorkang]

I've had plenty of dealings with prideful and selfish humans, as well as other races. It's not limited to your kind.

[Kang's brows furrow slightly.]

You don't like your fellow humans much, do you?

[uzi]

I think it's more accurate to say that I don't like anyone, much. Usually, at least.

[governorkang]

[The rest of the day at work goes by relatively quickly. The last half hour has Kang's stomach starting to feel a little queasy, and a headache forming, and by the time he's on the bus to go back to his quarters, he's getting chills (an interesting new experience for him in a mammal body) even though his skin feels very warm to the touch, and coughing. He at least knows that he's sick, but he has no idea what it is or how to treat it, never having experienced anything more than food poisoning or an infection in his life. He hopes it isn't anything too serious, and that it'll pass quickly enough.]
