Still, everything is gathered. Last photos are taken- and then she stops, camera-phone still in hand. And idea forms.

"You know this is where you carry me right. That's. Kind of your thing."

I brought some things just in case, too. Not sure how many people realize how cold this water may be.

He's lost it. [ She says, voice heavy with disappointment. ]

[ he laughs. ]

What, did you think I was talking about me? What do you think I'm here for?

[ yeah, he's just gonna glance conspiratorially over at the other swimmers. ]

Beats waiting for summer to roll around.

[shotup]

["It's like a step removed from cannibalism." Look, it's gross, okay? Also rude. Also ew. "I would really rather you didn't."]

[shotup]

["Right. Now's not the time to despair." Says the sea lion full of woe and despair. Maybe another swim will cheer him up. "I'm heading back to the water. I feel out of place up here."]

Considering my stomach shriveled up long ago, I doubt it has much of an objection.

[ "Is that you talking or the sea lion"? ]

[shotup]

[Forlornly: "The sea lion."

And then he slipped sadly into the ocean.]

[ She watches and then trots back to her own bag, not sure what the next course of action is. ]

Innovative! [ john follows his gaze, then looks back at bradbury. ] What did bring all this on, anyway?

True, true, but don't be too sad if passerbys ask if you're my grandfather.

That hardly constitutes abusing it, if you ask me. [ He popped another into his mouth, as if it were no thing. ]

Was it from the abuse, or something else, I wonder?

[ his lips quirk. ] Does there need to be a reason for everything?

[ and more seriously, because he likes john to give him a straight answer: ]

I figured I needed something to clear my head.

[waiting]

[ He looks out at the water, not really sure what to say. After a moment: ]

You think he's gonna get better?

[waiting]

Ouch. [ He feigns a wince, clutching at his chest like he's been struck. ]

You really know how to make a guy feel special, don't you?

[Jane simply hands him back his much emptier cup with a grin.]

It's okay, age simply means you're more experienced.

[acclimatized]

Diving headfirst into subzero temperatures will do that.

[ despite his sarcasm, john understands where he's coming from and nods. ]

That's NoHOPE's objective. [ But she's not sure. She's not even sure she cares (she does) as much as she should. That bridge is burned. ]

["It's not cannibalism! You're just a fat fucking cow." He's actually really hungry. So hungry. But nope not gonna eat fellow imPorts even with bear instincts telling him otherwise.

"What's your name, fatty?"]

["I think she chickened out at the last minute. Smarter than the rest of us, but that's nothing new." Not that he cares all that much. Life as a bear isn't much difference from any other shit he's been through. At least he's a killing machine like this. No one fucks with polar bears.]

[shotup]

[He snorts indignantly. "I'm not a cow. I'm a sea lion. And my name is Roy."]

[waiting]

[ Bradbury has distinctly less fond memories of polar bears, so he can't help but bristle at Bond's presence, even if he knows how illogical that is.

He lifts his head, ears flicking uncertainly.

"Well, we can't just stand around here with our paws up our asses." He lumbers over to Bond, nudging him with a shoulder.

"Come on. Let's see if we can round this zoo up. Don't try to eat anyone that talks." ]

[waiting]

At this point, of course, he gives her the most incredulous look he can manage while he's fuzzy and easily weighs more than a ton, the you serious translating pretty clearly across the inter species barrier. His jaw even drops open, like he's speechless, before a strangled sort of noise comes out.

Especially considering her retinue. His gaze swings over to the raccoons, like he's expressing serious doubts about their ability to behave, before he looks back over at her.

She's got to be kidding, right?

[waiting]

[ he cracks a grin, maybe a bit too obviously relieved that john isn't pursuing this line of conversation, and gladly takes the out not to have to explain it in any detail. ]

Yeah, or it could freeze my balls solid. Either way... [ he shrugs. ]

Everyone could use something different once in a while.
