[ there is cake! there is food! don't talk with your mouth full, it's rude. ]

[Nill is still floored that this has happened at all. But the cake is delicious, Kanaya and Kate had clearly spent quite a bit of time on this, and she is surrounded by friends. What more could she ask for? She hadn't even been planning on having a party! She's incredibly touched by all of this, and is grinning as she nibbles at her cake, making sure everyone else is enjoying it as well.]

Nill!

Nill there is human icing sponge here and it's really tasty. Have you had some?!

[Human icing sponge. She will probably never get used to troll phrases. But she nods, and reaches over to a nearby table to pick up her own piece, which is half gone. She's been at it for like ten minutes. She just eats very slowly.]

Do you know what kind it is? It's tasty! We should have some more.

*She's almost done with her second piece.*

[Feferi!! But she does know that it's a vanilla cake with chocolate frosting (her favorite) so she nods and quickly finishes off her first piece. She isn't used to eating so fast, but for Feferi she's willing to risk her silent hiccups.]

[The way Calvin is just stuffing his face with the cake, one might wonder whether he is actually here for Nill or if he even knows what the event is.]

[ you gotta be getting the birthday girl something, come on now. ]

[Oh no!! She hadn't even thought about presents, now with her birthday and Christmas being so close together. But if you've gotten one for her, well. Here she is, suitably flustered by whatever it may be.]

Happy birthday Nill!

[Calvin hands her a big flag he made from an old bedsheet, in imitation of the one above their snow fort in December. Just like that one, its symbol is a wing.]

Pretty neat, huh? You can hang it in your room!

[Nill looks all kinds of excited when she grabs it by the corners and stretches her arms as far as they can go so she can hold it up. Her wings flick behind her and she nods, smiling widely. Hopefully, Davesprite will help her hang it somewhere. She's never been incredibly handy with those kinds of things. Nill lowers her arms and smiles at Calvin, thanks all over her face.]

[Calvin smiles back.]

I'm glad you like it! When you show it off to everyone, make sure you mention who made it.

[She pauses for a moment and then looks around until she spots a marker lying on a nearby table. She gestures for Calvin to follow her. She grabs the marker, lays part of the flag on the table, and holds the utensil out to him. He might as well sign it, right?]

Oh that's right! I knew I forgot something.

[Calvin ordinarily needs no encouragement or invitation to sign his work. He scrawls 'CALVIN- BOY GENIUS' across the cloth with gusto.]

There! Remember to tell everyone I take commissions if they're interested. There's nothing like good advertising to boost a new artist's career!

[Nill watches over his shoulder, and gently places her fingers on his arm so he can hear her laugh. She gathers the flag up in her arms and nods, grinning widely. Of course she'll tell her friends. She doesn't actually know how many of them would want a flag, but there's no harm in asking.]

So are you having a good birthday? I know you're getting great presents at least!

[She is indeed getting great presents! She hadn't asked for any, but there isn't any way she's going to give them back; that would be incredibly rude. So she grins, and nods again. This birthday has been excellent! Great cake, great friends, and, as Calvin had mentioned, great presents.]

Sorry I can't stay very long -- I'm running an experiment at work, you know how it is. [Though in truth, it has less to do with work and more not wanting to be the creep hanging out at the teenage girl's birthday party.] But I wanted to drop by to give you this.

[He hands her a rectangular package wrapped in silvery paper.]

[You're not a creep, Peter! Nill likes you, and she's technically an adult now anyway. It's totally not weird for you to hang out, right? Right.

She takes the present, her face a little pink. There had been no need for presents from anybody! In hindsight, maybe she shouldn't have picked a birthday so close to Christmas, but it wasn't as if she'd been thinking about that at the time, but she isn't going to change her mind now. After a moment of her this was not necessary look, she tears off the paper and her wings perk up. She's never read Austen, but she's always loved books. Nill tilts her head up at him and smiles her thanks.]

[He smiles, seeing her evident pleasure.] I'm glad you like it -- I was hoping you hadn't read her stuff already, or at least not all of it, but I figured even if you had it's always nice to have an upscale version of the classics around.

[And this is definitely a nice version. She flips it open and sees that there are several books inside, which is actually really cool. She reaches out to lightly touch his arm:]

Thank you Peter. This is very nice. I cannot wait to start reading it.

Well, I hope you enjoy it!

[He looks around the party, and back at her.] So, how's your big day going so far?

[She keeps her hand on his arm. It's easier, this way.]

It has been nice. I did not expect to have a party this year to be honest.

[He bends it towards her, so she doesn't have to stretch as far to stay in contact.]

Oh, yeah? Why's that?

[She appreciates the accommodation. And Nill gives a little shrug. Her cheeks are pink.]

I did not really mention it to anyone. My birthday I mean.

Why the heck not? You don't turn...

[His face goes through a series of contortions as he tries to remember how old she is. Well, this is embarrassing.]

... insert-your-age-here every day.

[Aw no that's cute. It makes her laugh, at least.]

I am eighteen now.

Eighteen! Not quite as fun as 21, but getting there.

[Aaaaand feeling old now. This is probably where he should make a relatively-graceful exit, eh?]

[Nill rolls her eyes.]

I will be twenty one some day.

[And she sort of looks off to the side as she notices someone else coming him, giving him a way to make said relatively graceful exit.]

Yeah, but hopefully you won't be around to celebrate with us. [He shrugs, hoping his meaning is clear. He likes Nill a great deal, but that doesn't mean he wants her to be trapped here for three more years.]

Anyway, I'd better let you get back to your teeming admirers. Enjoy the rest of your day, and see you soon, Nill.

[She understands his meaning, and won't correct him--because as bad as being trapped here might seem, it's still better than back home. She isn't about to tell anyone that at her birthday part of all places. So all she does is nod, smiling a bit.]

Thank you for coming and also for the book. I will see you later Peter.

[He gives her a little wave, and heads towards the exit.]

[ the living room's been cleared out to open up a dance floor. the music is probably a little awful if your taste doesn't mesh with a teenage girl's, but that is something you will just have to deal with. ]

[Dancing isn't really something Nill is good at, but she'll be damned if she doesn't love this teenage girl music. It's probably poppy along with the occasional cliché dance song like The Cupid Shuffle or Cha Cha Slide, but she is on the floor and dancing slightly less awkwardly than she thinks she is.]

[ SURPRISE or not so much a surprise: kate's going to be dancing to whatever they're playing. she's quite the energetic dancer.

today's not a day to think of what drug labs she's going to be busting in on or where in queens to search for a certain two-faced criminal's old henchmen. it's nill's day and she's come to enjoy that with her and her friends. ]
