nothing ventured, nothing gained.
WHO: lil and cross.
WHERE: his place.
WHEN: morning.
WARNINGS: two tall people with bad manners!
SUMMARY: this is domestic.
FORMAT: quicklog.
[ it's still strange to wake up and find a man who's not her husband in bed with her. she isn't sure she'll ever be used to it entirely, and on her bad days, isn't sure she wants to, but today is a better day, and she's as close to content as she ever can be. she isn't raging -- she's always a little crazy, a little tragic, but dangerously close to content. as long as she doesn't think about madison too long or too hard. if she does that, her chest starts to get tight, her emotions start to reel, and regret threatens to swallow her whole.
so lil does her best not to.
she's looking at herself in the mirror as she rinses the toothpaste from her mouth. mutant genes have helped her age gracefully -- she doesn't look as middle-aged as she feels sometimes -- but all that raw emotion has started to show, she thinks, in the slight wrinkles at the corners of her eyes. she stares a minute, her grip on the sides of the sink tightening briefly, then leans to spit into the sink. minty fresh.
leaning out of the bathroom, she calls out: ]
You up, hon?

he was a very strange man, and for a while he tried to hide it to make himself seem more charming but really what man sits in his bedroom naked in front of the sun and sunbathes.
cross does.)
Barely. (he mumbles, finishing off some grading before stretching in front of it.)
Aren't you a welcome sight in the morning.
sorry for the lateness bb
she finishes up with the sink, digging around in the drawers for a hair tie for a bit as she responds mildly enough: ]
Same sight you been havin' most every mornin' for a while, ain't it?
[ ah hah. there's one. she winds it around her hair, pulling it back into a long, long tail before coming back out into the bedroom, eying him a moment with the unembarrassed ease of a woman who's seen what she's looking at more than a few times. a bit dryly: ]
You workin' on your tan?
it is aokay (◡‿◡✿)
exorcists watch people, in order to be able to pick out a demon wearing a person's skin and a genuine person, they had to be adept at it. he offers her a weak smile before sighing.)
My darling, you are Aphrodite herself. I, on the other hand, was cursed to be born a pale boy from the isles. It takes a lot of effort to keep me looking like this.
(oh god, the freckles, if he didn't sit in the sun too long. or maybe he'd go back to his original pale self, the epitome of that terrible stereotype.)
no subject
she lifts a hand to brush red hair back from his face before leaning to press a brief kiss to his mouth. mildly: ]
Y'ain't foolin' anyone with that self-depreciatin' talk, hon.
no subject
You wouldn't know it, but I was not always this handsome. There was a time when I was not.
no subject
That right? What happened, y'get all transformed when a princess kissed you or somethin'?
no subject
Actually, before I got conscripted into the Holy Dark Order, I used to be really lanky because I was piss poor. Can you imagine it? Short hair, terrible beard that was unkempt and I smelled terrible.
(it didn't matter that he was making it up, but there was some truth in the sentiment. a part of him thought that she'd hate to learn that he was skinny because he worked in a lab and that the only reason that he became this bulky was so that he could perform better in battle.)
Anyway, society intervened and I had to shape up.

it's a little amused and a little affectionate when she responds: ]
Y'clean up well, anyway. Guess I was lucky t'just be born with good genes.
no subject
he sighs dramatically, even almost comically as he seems to resign himself to the fate of lilian being far out of his league.)
And that, is why every morning I sit in the sun. Can you imagine if all of this was pale and had freckles? Never again.
no subject
like this, she's almost deceptively docile, curled up against him, affectionate. ]
Don't think it'd be so damn awful, hon. Coupla freckles might even be kinda endearin', y'know.
no subject
all he has to offer is that when she needs him, he'll be there.)
You say that now. Plus, I'm quite sure that all of the freckles were on the side of the face that got lost.
no subject
out loud, she makes a light disbelieving noise. ]
Hey, I know what I like. Ain't any "sayin' that now" bullshit about it. Anyway, who's ever heard of havin' freckles on only one side?
no subject
(he sighs, resigning himself to this fact. maybe it's the fact that he's sure that she could care less.)
no subject
[ it isn't as if she's a stranger to masks anyway. the woman did play at superhero for most her life, even if she was hardly a model hero. it doesn't bother her, not in an aesthetic way. she's lonely enough that it doesn't matter in that sense.
but, at length, she asks: ]
What d'you wear it for, anyway? It ain't like y'gotta hide anythin' from me.
no subject
(he shrugs, it's been attached to his face for so long that it literally has become a part of him. some people think it makes him look untrustworthy, some are intrigued by it, but in the end of the day it does what it's supposed to.)
It's an old battle wound that took the majority of my face off. It's a lot easier to talk to people when they're not wondering where the hell your face is.
no subject
plainly, at length: ]
Well. It don't bother me.
no subject
it terrifies him, and he's thankful that she's on the side with the mask so that she can't see it. it's almost as if he's calculating what her chances of survival are with him, or what's the probability that all of this would be ruined.)
You're really special, you know that?
no subject
she reaches to turn his head towards her, tilting her head to kiss him lightly. ]
So y'keep tellin' me, hon.
no subject
(he rubs her back, slightly. maybe today he'll sketch her expression in his journal, next to his findings of something mundane or the other. it's a silly thing that he does, but he figures if he doesn't sketch or diagram everything that he's encountered, he'll never learn.
lillian is just one of the few subjects that he likes to do for memories sake.)
Are you sure you have to go be a productive member of society?
no subject
Maybe. Why, y'got somethin' more important?
no subject
We could just lie together in bed, all day. I could read, you could lay there being gorgeous. Maybe we'll have a quick shag every once and a while.
no subject
Ain't y'just romantic. Y'sure know how t'sweetalk a girl.
no subject
(he's perfectly content carrying her around the place, before deciding to unceremoniously dumping them both on the bed. a kiss on the cheek before he absolutely spreads out like a huge cat.)
no subject
Y'sure y'don't wanna get somethin' done today instead?
no subject
Fed Tim, read a couple of books, I'm going out for drinks later tonight and ... that's pretty much it. Look at that, I got something done.
no subject
S'pose that means y'got time for me after all.
no subject
We have all the time in the world.
