01 | He's not as friendly as he seems
WHO: Makishima and Yako
WHERE: a restaurant of Yako's choosing
WHEN: about half an hour or so after this exchange
WARNINGS: Just a general warning for Makishima and his thought processes right now, He's definitely not just taking her to lunch. Will update if necessary.
SUMMARY: In which Makishima is already plotting to plot things by taking a former detective (alibiet a young one) to lunch
FORMAT: Quick to start
Makishima arrived a little early at their predetermined location, having been able to get perfect directions from his communicator. He thought it polite to sit and wait for his newtoy friend to show up. He's not anxious or fidgety. He's in no hurry at all to get anywhere. To be completely honest, he's not even all that hungry. [okay maybe he is a little but he was over exaggerating it] He simply observes the comings and goings around him- they same as he always had done. Ah, was that his little friend there? He believed it was. She was right on time. She looked much younger in person. He gives her a warm smile and waves her over.
"I'm over here. I was a little early. But I think we timed it well."

Though since he probably doesn't know what he signed on for, she'll try not to let it get out of hand. She moves over to his table, her stride and motions composed, but her smile betrays an easy self-assurance that also shows when she pauses to offer a hand for him to shake before she takes her seat and picks up the menu.
"I hope you didn't have to wait too long. Have you already ordered?"

He's relaxed; he doesn't seem to have a care in the world; at least on the outside. In his mind, however, he's observing her every move carefully, trying to guess what kind of person she might be. What kind of questions would she ask? Would she swallow lies and half truths easily? Although it may not be accurate, he's already got a half formed impression of her just by the way she walked in the room. He thinks she'll be a nothing special at best, and a downright pushover at worst. She might now even be worth his time. But...it was still far too early to decide that.
"I take your promptness as a good sign."
He offers her a warm, charming smile.

Normally, Yako has an easier time forming an impression when she's face to face. So far, what she's seen matches up to what she's been able to gather from their previous conversations but... in person, something feels off, though she couldn't say why.
And while she can't place the feeling, Yako Katsuragi's relied on her intuition too long to simply disregard it.
"I never say no to a free lunch." She sounds almost deadly serious, before her expression lightens and she waves one of the waitresses over to their table. "Though if you have a budget, er, now would really be the time to let me know."

Makishima's not the type to worry about things like money. What he really cared about what the person. He was definitely interested in where this could potentially go. Although he was rather fond of brutality, particularly if it made a person being forced to show their true nature, but Makishima wasn't immediately seized with a desire to put this girl.
"I spare no expense when treating others."
He offers a warm smile and pauses for a moment to let her speak if she whiches, out of politeness. When she doesn't, he continues.
"It'd be nice if you could tell me about this place..."

"What exactly would you like to know?" She reaches up, as if to adjust the clip in her hair, smiling apologetically -- at the piggishness or the fact that she's answering his question with another question. "Is there something in particular you're curious about?"

He takes no outward notice of how much she orders, nor the fact she answered him with a question. After all, he wanted her to feel at ease around him. At least for the moment. It was no fun if he was outed as a psychopathic criminal mastermind right away.

"The Porter is responsible for bringing ImPorts like us into the City, and it was first activated five years ago, after the City's entire police force vanished. From what I've been able to gather on the subject, the original ImPorts were instructed to fight crime -- as you can probably imagine, things in the City were quite chaotic without any law enforcement.
"But now? The answer to your question isn't as clear. Lachesis -- the AI that most people assume is responsible for operating the Porter now -- wasn't the one who originally brought ImPorts to the City, and she certainly isn't operating under the same conditions. She's continued to bring in ImPorts, but while every one of us gets called a "hero" when we arrive, that doesn't mean everyone she's brought in is heroic.
"And I'm afraid that's as much of an answer as I can give you."
It wasn't the most satisfying answer she could have given, and judging by her wry smile, she knows it.

The idea is fascinating to him. He was definitely a villain, but he was also a villain with a purpose. Unless he found a purpose to be villainous here, he might actually enjoy being fairly neutral. For now, at least- all it would take is one good reason for him to take up his old role as a bad guy then he would.
