WHERE: That bar that Kenzi rented out for the night.

SUMMARY: Kenzi throws Kang a surprise party for the day he picked to be his hatching day.

[Hopefully the bar isn't difficult to find for anyone attending. It's a nice bar too, Kenzi loves it so much because it reminds here a bit of the Dal minus the pub food and Trick behind the counter.

The inside has been decorated thanks to Kenzi, there's paper lanterns strung up and various birthday related things like balloons and the likes. The bar doesn't normally serve food so Kenzi had someone cater, so there's a few tables set up with anything from BBQ to salads. All in all a nice, varied spread.

The pool tables (there's two of them) are all set up and ready for anyone who wants to play.

There's one table for presents set up next to an empty table that is meant for the cake, which will only come out later.

Hopefully the night goes well considering some of the guests are natives that work with Kang.]

ARRIVALS AND WHATEVER

[wisecracked]

[Kenzi all done up to the nines for this party and she makes an attempt to greet everyone as they come in.]

[governorkang]

[All Kenzi had told Kang was to meet her at the bar at eight o'clock. She'd been acting strange the last few days, and it had made him suspicious that she was planning something.

And, he's apparently been right to be suspicious.

There's nothing on the outside to suggest anything out of the ordinary, but as soon as he opens the door, he stops right in his tracks and stares at the homemade banner proudly saying, "Happy Hatching Day, Kang!"]

I told her not to do anything big.

[He's smiling widely as he says it, though.]

[ Gil's left his present where the other gifts are. His is a fancy ale bottle, but it's wrapped in a way Kang wouldn't be able to tell it's ale until he opened it up. Kenzi's idea, thankfully, not Gil's.

He feels out of place in the bar, but with the birthday boy here, he may as well say hi and congratulate him. ]

She really wanted to. [ That's Kenzi for you. ] Happy birthday, then.

[governorkang]

Thank you, Gil.

[He takes a couple of steps into the bar and looks around at the guests, noticing a few of his Native coworkers.

This will be interesting.]

Where is she?

[invoking]

Kenzi? [ He takes a second to look around the bar. ] ... Huh.

[ Where did she go? ]

[wisecracked]

Right here! [She grins at Gil before moving over to give Kang a hug.]

Sorry, was talking with the band. So, are you surprised?

[governorkang]

I knew you were up to something. I just didn't know it was something like this.

[Kang returns the hug with a rare warm one of his own.]

Thank you, Kenzi.

[invoking]

[ He smiles a bit, stepping back to give them some room. ]

[wisecracked]

[She gives a little laugh as she pulls back.] It is kinda hard to keep things from you but I'm glad it still ended up being a surprise. [She slaps his shoulder before stepping away.] No need to thank me.

[Turning to Gil now.] I know you don't drink but the bartender can make you up some of the drinks without alcohol if there's any you wanna try.

CAKE AND PRESENTS

[The cake comes out and it's definitely one Kenzi went all out on. It's big a big, tiered thing decorated to look as if it's made of bronze scales. It's almost too beautiful to eat. Almost.

It's also time to start opening those presents.]

[governorkang]

...Kenzi, why did you get a cake when you know I don't like sweet things?

[He feels kind of bad for it, that she'd go to that effort for something he won't eat.]

[hastheedge]

It's traditional, [Xanatos answered for Kenzi, as he walked up towards Kang, smile on his face. In his hands, he held a small box, obviously Kang's present as shown by the wrapping paper.] You can't have a birthday without a cake.

Besides, I'm certain the rest of us can do a fair amount of damage to that cake. [He knew he would have a big slice. It looked delicious.]

[governorkang]

Technically, it's my hatching day.

[He says it in a teasing tone, taking a closer look at the details on the cake. She'd done a good job. Then, he notices the present, and he shakes his head.]

You didn't have to.

[hastheedge]

Hatching day or birthday, I think you still deserve a present.

[He offered the small box to Kang, smiling all the while.]

[governorkang]

[He takes the box and easily rips the wrapping paper off with his claws, opening it.]

[hastheedge]

[Inside the box, there's a gift card to a local movie theater as well as a piece of paper with 'iou: one good bottle of alcohol' written on it.]

Knowing me, I'd probably pick out the drink you can't stand. So, tell me what you want and I'll bring it by the office tomorrow or the day after.

[governorkang]

Thank you.

[Kang claps Xanatos on the shoulder warmly, naming a strong, not-sweet liquor he's particularly fond of.]

[hastheedge]

[Xanatos nods, making a mental note of the liquor.]

Good taste. [he says, with a smile and a chuckle] and definitely not what I would have gotten.

[governorkang]

We're known for our love of good alcohol.

[Among other things.]

Do I get a pass for calling out of work tomorrow if I end up hungover?

[hastheedge]

Why the hell not. [Xanatos said, with a grin and a small shrug.]

After all, you only turn...however old you are once in your life.

[governorkang]

[Kang grins as well. This is going to be a good night.]

Forty-eight.

[hastheedge]

And here I was having a small crisis that I was turning forty.

[governorkang]

That's not all that old for a human.

For all I know, I'll live for centuries.

[hastheedge]

One of these days I need to explain the concept of "mid-life crisis" to you. [said jokingly, of course.]

[wisecracked]

What Xanatos said. And as part of tradition you have to blow out candles. Since it would have been a fire hazard [she grins] to have as many candles as you are old I just got a couple of the number candles.

[governorkang]

Be glad I'm not over a century old.

[Kang grins as well.]

[wisecracked]

I don't think there'd be enough cake for all those candles. [She laughs and moves over the light the candles once everyone's around.]

Blow 'em out and make a wish.

[governorkang]

[He's seen enough movies and shows by now to know how it's supposed to be done. He silently makes his wish and blows out the candles.]

[wisecracked]

[And just because she feels she has to;] What'd you wish for?

[Mordin looks like he always does: impeccably neat, dressed in his white-black futuristic lab suit, smiling, every inch a scientist. Except he is carrying a massive hunk of salted pork across his shoulders. He lugs it up to the table for presents and slams it down with no small amount of pride.]

Happy hatching day, Kang.

Where the hell did you find that?

[Kang laughs, definitely appreciating the present.]

[Mordin beams and pats his giant chunk of dead pig fondly.]

Took some effort. Had to construct a database search of all butchers within state area. Then, narrowed down using factors likely to make their products more appealing to you. Process of elimination, some questions, taste testing. Worth it. Better to do things right.

[The Professor is already noticing the difference between the boisterous Kang Kenzi was talking about and the Governor Mordin has dealt with before. It's intriguing.]

[It's a very delicious looking chunk of dead pig, and he's somewhat tempted to have a bit of it that night.]

I'll try to make it last for a while.

[The only thing that would have been better is venison.]

Assume this is your first hatching day among majority human population. Hope you're enjoying yourself so far.

[Mordin had never spent so long living among so many humans before being brought to the City, and is always interested in how the other nonhumans are coping with life on Earth.]

This is the first I've celebrated it. Kenzi made me pick a day, since I don't know when it really is.

[He shrugs. He knows it would have been pointless to argue it with her.]

[Mordin nods.]

Understandable. Most egg-laying species don't attach the same cultural significance to such dates. Vastly different experience from reproducing via live birth.

[He gives a small shrug.]

Salarians generally don't celebrate hatching either. Date simply used to track our age.

[governorkang]

That's not the reason. None of the first generation males like myself know because the humans didn't bother to tell us. We never saw the point in it, given our reason for creation. Those of us that hatched after are a special case.

Oh. I see.

[Mordin inhales.]

Unfortunate circumstances. Cultural dislocation due to species background, no roots or heritage in conventional sense. Hadn't appreciated what it would mean.
