I was built to last

WHO: Jane and Rick
WHERE: A bar
WHEN: Sunday night
WARNINGS: nada
SUMMARY: After two weeks of ignoring reality Jane needs to talk about the whole torture thing
FORMAT: whatever works!

[Spike was off doing whatever it was he was doing with that blonde leaving Jane home alone to think which really wasn't something she wanted to do. Bad t.v. and cold Chinese helped her ignore all those damn thoughts, but now it was quiet and thoughts were coming back that just weren't welcome. She needed a drink. Lots of drinks if she was lucky. Lazily she grabbed her comm and threw Bradbury a text asking him to meet her at a less than seedy bar. Hey, she knew how to treat her friends.

Sunday night left the bar empty enough that Jane was able to grab a table in a dark corner. Already she was working on the first of many beers of the night while she waited for Rick to arrive.]

[ He'd been wondering why he hadn't seen much of Jane around of late, but she's never really given him a reason to pry. He'd assumed, if nothing else, that she was on her own business, and that if it was something important, she would have mentioned it.

And truth be told, he'd been a little too distracted with his own duties to take too close a look at anyone else's. Regardless, he was glad to hear from her. It took him a few moments to spot her, considering the seat she'd chosen, but after a little careful scanning around the room, he found her.

Sliding into the seat across her, he raised a brow. ]

Not feeling social? [ He was already looking her over, instinctively, trying to assess why she'd extended the sudden invitation. ]

[ If the question surprises him, he doesn't show it, even if he's not used to doing shop talk in a bar. He folds his hands together and rests them against the edge of the table, not moving to flag down the waiter to order a drink. ]

Business as usual. We bumped it up while that was going down, but with 'em in custody or dead, it's back to business as usual. We got no reason to think City Hall's gonna be the next target.

[ He quirks a brow. ]

Unless you know something I don't.

[ There's a pause, where he isn't sure he's just heart what she said correctly, and then a low hiss of breath when he exhales. ]

Shit, you got caught up in that mess? How'd you get out?

[ It's a lot to take in, in one go, and his expression slips from stunned, to incredulous, and finally to pissed off -- before he reins it in. He doesn't need to be losing his temper, right now.

Finally: ]

Guess anyone would've needed a little time to themselves, after all that. [ He can relate, he thinks, about having things you'd rather wipe from your mind. Too bad the brain doesn't work that way. ]

Wish you'd let me know sooner, though.

[ He frowns at her, hard. He gets the flippancy -- James had had the same way of dealing with it, after all. It's never pleasant, finding yourself suddenly helpless; it's easier to play it off as no big deal than to deal with it head-on.

He's no good at dealing with this stuff, and never has been, so it takes a little more effort than he'd like to admit to think it over, trying to figure out what he can say in response. It's always hard to know what can be said. ]

You know it ain't that easy. [ He says, finally. ] And you know there's more than one way to get at someone than by breaking their bones.

[ She's been in the business, after all. She would know better than most. ]

So why'd you walk in? [ He tipped his head at her, curiously. Offering no judgment, but a simple question. If he'd been in the same situation, he would have said it was simply the right thing to do, but he doesn't know if the same motives apply here. ]
