SUMMARY: This log is forever open to fraternize, socialize, and otherwise eat pie in Ned's restaurant. Increasingly throughout the month, the Pie Hole will be decorated for Halloween! All day on the 31st there will be candy apples and popcorn balls behind the counter for trick-or-treaters and anyone else adventurous enough to come in wearing a Halloween costume.

[ He smirks a little. ]

I was thinking of something more like a shadow. Or, you know, a bad habit. But it also reminds you what to look for, right? And what to avoid.

[glowsferatu]

No, a leech is a hemophage, [ ~* her kin *~ ] and not always aquatic. I think it's definitely one of those fish.

But I...suppose I know what you mean. It even works in some cases, when the signs and parallels are strongest. With others, I can't help thinking the only common pattern is me.

[retropolis]

Well -- yes, of course you'll be a common pattern in your own relationships. Whatever exactly that means usually still has a lot to do with circumstances. Sometimes they're more spontaneous than anyone can predict, for better or worse.

You just have to try your best.

[glowsferatu]

You shouldn't give it any less, but...what I mean is that sometimes we may be the common element bringing them to that inevitable ruin. Maybe it isn't the other person's fault at all.

Well, not completely, at least.

[retropolis]

[ He frowns again, shifting uncomfortably in his seat. It's a little too close to home. ]

I have a hard time picturing what sort of common element could make that possible.

[glowsferatu]

That may be a failure of imagination. [ or just a less potent self loathing. ] What I mean is that when things sour with people, we always tend to think on how awful they are for bringing it to that point, but what if they aren't the ones who were ever awful? What if it was us all along?

[retropolis]

[ Just a lot of denial to accept responsibility. He bristles a bit. ]

Maybe that happens sometimes. The few good people I know that are still alive I've managed to keep on good terms with.

[ His frown tightens for a moment then relaxes a bit, along with his shoulders. He admits: ]

... It was different when I was younger. I just didn't understand what the problem was, back then.

[glowsferatu]

Everything's different when you're younger. [ talking as if about a distant past. right, kanaya. ] You don't have quite as much say in the matter, but there's less to be responsible for, as well.

Those both increase with time, but they're still in constant conflict. Really, we're probably lucky there are people who will tolerate the missteps, because we're bound to have issues trying to keep the two in balance.

[retropolis]

[ He smiles slightly at that, but it's only enough of a smile to keep it from being a frown. ]

Or we're also lucky there are people who make bigger missteps than ours. I think another person's problems are always much easier to solve.

[glowsferatu]

Easily. [ said like it's the most obvious statement in the world. ]

But...I don't know. It's stupid, I start to feel frustrated with being ignored over things I've never even informed anyone I'm experiencing. Things I should be able to sort on my own. It's all only ever my own fault, when you get down to it.

[retropolis]

[ He bites the corner of his lip thoughtfully. ]

It's a matter of prioritizing emotions. You either feel ignored or you feel like a burden, but some problems need more than one pair of eyes to find solutions for. When I was a Marine we tried not to keep much from one another because if one man is compromised, the whole team might feel it, but-- [ But he's a hypocrite. ] Sometimes you're too close to the answer to see it yourself.

[glowsferatu]

I guess. But you never know what they'll do with it. Maybe they do nothing for the situation and just blow it off, or worse, just tell you you're wrong for feeling it. Or at all.

Feeling isn't what anyone counts on me for. [ eyeing her plate idly, she tucks her chin into her hand and finishes the last bite of her pie. ]

[retropolis]

[ He sips his coffee, looking at her from over the cup. ]

Well-- I'm sorry to hear that. I imagine that can't be easy on a young girl. [ It sure isn't for him. ] You know, if you're in any trouble I don't mind listening if ever you require a little advice.

[ Are you a Troubled Teen... ]

[glowsferatu]

[ there's a little uneasiness on her face. she must sound pretty pitiful right, doesn't she? well, that won't do at all. ]

It can't be easy for anyone of any age, whether a young girl or not. But when were we ever promised it would be easy? I don't know that easy is even a real word, just a myth that somehow snuck its way into our vocabulary.

But, um...thanks. I'll be sure to keep the offer in mind.

[retropolis]

[ He doesn't look entirely convinced by her answer, but what else is there to say? Nelson clears his throat, hand brushing over his mouth nervously. ]

I don't mean-- well, I know we hardly know each other well, I only offer because I suspect I'll have insight as far as some things are concerned. [ If only they knew. ] Um... neutral insight, that is. I'd hate to pry into personal business.

[glowsferatu]

[ no one's getting into personal business, though it's hard to say whether they've ended up doing so already. all kinds of feelings with few details associated to them at all. ]

Right. Well, I suppose it would have to be neutral, I have trouble imagining that you've ever been a young girl. But then, perhaps not all of my life is exactly specific to that facet, or any of the others that I know to be unique for me.

I don't really know enough about you to say what you haven't experienced. [ hell, maybe he's even a secret vampire for all she knows. ]

[retropolis]

Well -- or me you. But sometimes neutral advice can be the most helpful, in my own experience. It can do wonders having insight from someone who hasn't already made up their mind upon a situation.

[ He smiles -- a little tensely -- and finishes up his coffee. He checks his watch. ]

Anyway... I suppose I ought to let you get back to work. Didn't mean to take up all of your morning.

[ she looks up with a start when he says that. minako and lancer are taking orders from the other customers seated now, and there's another just coming in the door. casual work environment though it may be, she can't help but feel she's been slacking off.

she rises from the booth and takes their plates, giving the group just taking their seats a nod and letting them know she'll be with them in just a moment. ]

Of course. So...shall I top off your coffee before you go, or should I just bring out the check?

[retropolis]

[ Even if it hasn't been all that long, Nelson does feel guilty for taking up her time; he's not late for work yet, but he won't be offensively early if he heads out shortly. ]

Um -- just the check will be fine. Thank you. [ He smiles. ] Sorry. I did enjoy the company.

Likewise. We'll have to do this again sometime.

[ she slips out of the booth and off toward the kitchen. ] I'll be right back with your check.
