[Alex feels just a small sting of envy which he quickly quashes as he watches Dazzler power up, glowing with her own energy. He should be able to do that, but he can't. But then-]

[Alison runs with him, shooting her photons at anything that comes closer. She blasts pieces and makes them smaller, forcing the impact to be less severe.]

[That light shield was useful, very useful. Alex wondered if he could conceivably do the same with his powers, maybe fine control of them to that specific extent- but then he firmly stopped that thought. No use pondering that now. Stay in the moment. Focus. He was that much more vulnerable without his powers. They run, stopping at intervals to save civilians.]

I thought you didn't want to be a superhero?

Yeah...

[Her break was mostly because Longshot died. Alison couldn't deal with any of that hero stuff for a long time. The only thing she had wanted to do was sing because it was safe.]

It just happens when you're tangled with the X-men.

Yeah, it does. I guess that's life.

[Alex would have been very happy just working on a phD in geophysics, and doing research on Muir Island. Or just doing nothing in Hawaii.]

[And she would have liked for a lot of things to have not occured in her life. Having to participate in gruesome wars on Mojoworld, for one, was something she could have done without.]
