[ I've come home ] [closed log]
WHO:
behisgirlfriday and
iron_liver
WHERE: Starting at the top of Pepper's apartment building
WHEN: 3:00 am, 11/06/09
WARNINGS: NO IDEA. Will update as necessary.
SUMMARY: Tony busted himself out of the hospital, almost got kidnapped, and stared at a liquor store for a while. Of course Pepper is worried.
FORMAT: Para?
Even at three in the morning, the City wasn't really asleep. Pepper stood on the edge of the rooftop, mittened hands stuffed in her armpits for warmth and a heavy trench belted around her waist. November was getting colder with each additional day, and she wouldn't be surprised if snow was on its way in the next couple of weeks. The City could use a blanket of snow, just to slough off some of its dirtier edges and corners. The stars were hazy with light pollution from all the neon and streetlights below, but she still found herself trying to pick out patterns in the constellations.

He arced near Pepper's building, already knowing that she would be there waiting. He slowed on the landing, coming around to land a few feet away.

She'd bundled up, knowing that Tony liked to fly fast and high---which meant a lot of freezing November air whipping past at illogical speeds. She didn't like it, but she didn't like him being alone right now. Pepper had given him his space all week, not wanting to---to bend to whatever weird feeling had been twisting unhappily in her gut since Monday, but she felt like being alone was too much for him.

"Pepper, are you ready?" he asked simply, holding out his arms for her.

Pepper didn't like flying. She wasn't scared of heights, per se, but there was a line between "heights" and "flying through the air at mach a million". Tony loved it, though, and she trusted that he wouldn't drop her.
"Where are we going?"
no subject
He took off, not fast, but instead up leisurely. It was still very fast, but not nearly as fast as he usually went. He knew Pepper didn't like to go fast, or at least as fast as he did. If he were by himself, he would have simply looped the planet, over and over, wandering aimlessly, sticking to International airspace.
He had the suddent wistful thought to still fly overseas.

Tony didn't do this unless something was up in a big way. She was surprised that he had allowed her to come along with him, since when he got into 'brooding' mode he usually wanted to get as far away from humanity as possible. She wasn't about to ask questions. He was safer with someone around him right now than he was alone. She'd mentally followed his motions all week, internally cringing at the places he went.
Tony wasn't in a good place, mentally. It wasn't surprising, considering he'd been punched into retardation a couple days before.

This was one of the former weeks. He felt as if he was slowly being pulled, and he couldn't fight against it much longer. His fingers tightened around Pepper's body, holding her tight to the cold metal.
"I haven't," he mentioned out of the blue. He didn't know if she had believed him before, but he wanted to reassert it now.

"I know," she said, her hand tightening on his arm. With her gloves on, she couldn't find purchase on the sleek metal. "I know that it's hard."

Go to the moon. Just stay there until all of this was over.
It was indeed tempting. Looking down on the Earth.
It hurt that it wasn't his home.
"It's normally only passing. I can..." he trailed off. "I can hold off, keep it from my mind," he sighed again. "This week, it's been worse."

She was so, so good at what she did.
"I haven't been keeping up on the network. I'm pretty bad at that, actually. I just never find the time."
That, or she didn't like seeing the motley spread of humans and almost-humans that were constantly looking for help or love or people to hurt on that network.
"If you're having trouble, you can call me. I have a line just for you for a reason, Tony."

He was bitter about it, yes. He had made concession after concession for the Endless, he knew the games it played, and that it wanted to play with everyone, but he was also...annoyed that it had decided that Tony had to suffer along with everyone else.
He had hoped that it wouldn't have done that. Amplifying them the way it had, Desire had sent Tony into a tailspin of hour after hour trying to keep himself from taking the 5 minute walk down to the gas station for cheap liquor.

Was that what Desire wanted? For people to indulge like animals?
There was a reason that Pepper had locked herself in the office. She knew what she could and couldn't do; she knew what she had to control. With everything as crazy as it was, she did just that: she controlled what she could, for fear that everything would fall apart if she didn't hold the pins in place.
"Respect it?" Pepper echoed. "How do you respect Desire? Just do what it---you---want?"
no subject
He arced out over the city, heading for the ocean.
"It wants to be recognized for what it is. That's why it's doing this. Showing all of us the control it has over us, how much it could hurt," he paused, "or even help us."
no subject
Pepper made a noise of agreement low in her throat. "That's what inhibition's all about, isn't it?" she said, curling a little bit closer to his chest. The metal was cold and she was starting to get numb.
"So, because we haven't been pandering to Desire's requests, we've all spent the week going a little bit crazy?"
