Remus had been to enough Christmas parties in his lifetime to know when one would end disastrously, including those that had been specifically dated to avoided interfering with other Christmas plans that the guests might have. This was one of them. But his tolerance had kept him quiet, the happy act of cleaning and decorating taken to as easily as any other task he did.

The twins had also been enlisted to help, given the important task of stringing a length of bright red ribbon and pine up the staircase to the second floor. The soft white lights that followed were magic. In fact, none of the lights, save for whatever lamps or overhead lights that Miles insisted upon, were run by electricity, and many were candles, kept only from setting anything ablaze by a flame-freezing charm.

By the time the morning of the party rolled around, the house looked as if it had been pulled straight out of a Christmas card, Remus borrowing from what he remembered of Christmases as Hogwarts and the Burrow, including a single bit of mistletoe in the entry. The snow helped, piling nicely (if in an oddly organized fashion) outside thanks to a little help from Miles, adding to the image; if nothing else, Remus was happy with it, the certainty that he would wind up having to transfigure another person into some sort of object nagging at the back of his mind.

Tin whistles, toy rocking horses, and sprigs of mistletoe were likely going to be very common later in the evening, he mused, tapping his wand rhythmically against the palm of his hand in thought as he checked everything over once more, walking through the sitting and dining rooms and out into the backyard where the tree house had been built out of ice and wood into the tree there. The floating green structures that Kyle Rayner had promised to provide were still missing, but they would be there soon enough.

He pocketed his wand and walked back into the house, shaking free the snow from his boots, and glancing at the clock. People who had offered their assistance had been asked to come early, which meant that the kitchen was soon going to turn into a madhouse, the extra stove only offering so much help. It also meant he had best make tea before he was banned from the room.

"Hopefully enough. What kind of fish is that?" he asked, taking the bag offered to him, and stepping back into the house so that Sanji could follow him. "The kitchen's this way. Edgeworth will be glad to have another cook."

"Tuna," was the reply, somewhat proudly, as Sanji followed after Phoenix. "I got it before one of the fancy restaurants could buy it for their patrons. I can get a lot of steaks off it, and maybe some sashimi."

[identity profile] objectiondenied.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"Better us then whoever's willing to shell out fifty bucks or more a plate, if you ask me. Sashimi. That's sushi isn't it?" Phoenix asked, not all that familiar with Asian food. He preferred simple and easy and his daughter was a teenager, pizza was the food of choice back home, the same way it was here.

Once in the kitchen, Sanji started depositing things on any available surface - clearly, the preparation had already begun. "I don't know about Asian," he confessed. "It's raw fish, yeah, but sliced into thin, tender strips." He flashed Phoenix a quick grin as he slipped out of his coat. "But if raw isn't your style, I'll be happy to grill you a nice tuna steak."

[identity profile] objectiondenied.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 07:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Phoenix set down the bags he had taken on the floor, the lack of counter space rapidly becoming obvious. Maybe another table wouldn't be a bad idea.

"I like my food as dead as possible, so consider me on the list for a steak. I'm Phoenix, by the way," he nodded to Edgeworth, who had finally noticed the arrival of his second chef. "And this will be my cue to get back to the door."

"Consider it done, Phoenix," Sanji nodded, following his eyes. Oh, so that must be the host...

[identity profile] bluffing-ruffle.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Edgeworth nodded in acknowledgement of Sanji's presence and came up to both introduce himself and view the... rather impressive tuna laying there ready to be made into so many delicious dishes.

"Well. Logic dictates that since most of the other guests helping with preparation duties are here, and since you seem--ah, fairly confident of yourself, even just standing there, you may very well be the sous chef proper?"

What strange eyebrows the man had.

Although he himself was best friends with Wright, and, well. One rarely had room to talk about odd eyebrows with Phoenix nearby.

"We are very grateful to have you on board, I assure you."

Sanji nodded once. "Yeah, that's me. Edgeworth?" He extended a hand - boy, it had been a while since he had to show manners to anybody. "Sanji. I like the setup. A cook could get real comfy in a place like this."

[identity profile] bluffing-ruffle.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Indeed," he said, pleased by the use of his last name; too many people felt themselves rightfully privileged to use his first name when they did not, in fact, have permission to do so. He very much liked Sanji already, and the subsequent compliment to the kitchens around them served to help with that.

"That's good to hear," Edgeworth replied, "As we'll be here a while yet. Please, do settle yourself as you prefer."

"Don't mind if I do." Sanji tossed his coat somewhere out of the way and immediately rolled up the sleeves of his dress shirt. Somewhere in one of his parcels was his knife - he only had one, so far, but it was really nice, and a cook lived by his knives. While hunting for it, he asked over his shoulder, "Would you have a fit if I smoked in here? Or should I do like at the restaurant and go out back for a break...?"

He washed his hands first, and got right to work. There was a lot to be done if they were to have such a huge and varied dinner ready by the time people arrived.

[identity profile] bluffing-ruffle.livejournal.com 2009-12-22 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Edgeworth picked up the coat, willing to take it to the room where all the others were being stored himself so as to provide maximum amount of time possible for Sanji to do his culinary magic. He remained in place long enough to catch sight of the knife and silently give it his approval, idly wondering if the blond might let him take a peek at it later--likely not, given how possessive most people were of such things, and if that was the case he would not blame the man. Still, it was nice to see.

"Hm. No smoking in the kitchen, please. However, that door there," he said, pointing to the locked one that led out to the wraparound porch, "Will lead you directly out for whenever you wish to do so, so it's not a particularly large walk."

After that, he left the kitchen to go toss the coat onto the neat little pile where the rest of them lay.

Sanji was getting used to those kinds of directions - although the City's smoking laws boggled him sometimes. "Yeah, sure. All right. It's your place, I'll be good." He still pulled out one cigarette to chew on, unlit, while he worked.

And maybe, just maybe, if Edgeworth wanted a peek at his knife, or to talk gourmet food preparation, he would be a ready audience. Once the ham was in the oven, though.

Already working in the kitchen was Bakura, hair tied back with a ribbon and wearing an apron, prepping one of the dishes he had brought from home to go into the oven. He looked up with a smile. "Sanji, hello!" he said with a laugh. "I should have expected to see you!"
notadartboard: (cool smile)

[personal profile] notadartboard 2009-12-23 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, yeah, that kid. "Ah. Hey, Bakura. Should have figured you would get roped into this too. What've you got there?" He peeped at the dish out of sheer curiosity. "Huh...nice oven. I should be able to fit the ham in there at the same time, hm?"
shiromadoushi: (Happy ^_^)

[personal profile] shiromadoushi 2009-12-23 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Bakura gave a soft laugh. "Volunteered, no coercion needed! And it's herbed salmon!" He smiled happily. "Probably, if it's going in at the same temperature!"
notadartboard: (blah blah blah)

[personal profile] notadartboard 2009-12-23 02:53 am (UTC)(link)
Sanji considered it for a moment. "For properly prepared salmon? Yes, I'm pretty sure they can go in at the same temperature. The ham just needs longer." His curiosity was more than piqued by someone who actually knew how to properly prepare seafood.

"I'll get that started first and then start cutting the tuna. What else have you got?"
shiromadoushi: (Busy working or cooking)

I really should colour this icon :D

[personal profile] shiromadoushi 2009-12-23 03:03 am (UTC)(link)
Bakura's a Japanese boy who can cook, of course he knows how to prep seafood properly.

"Heeeh, you brought tuna?" he grinned, turning to look at the fish. "Aaah, that's a nice one!" he exclaimed.

"And I have [list of various Japanese dishes + soba]. Most of them just needing to be heated up!"

[personal profile] notadartboard 2009-12-23 03:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Mm. Not bad." Even if Sanji didn't recognize the actual countries of origin, he had a handle on the widest range of cuisine - and he knew most of those by name. "I'll need to do a lot of cutting and cooking. But the mousse should wait until last so it doesn't congeal while it's chilling."

He plucked up his fine knife and got to work chopping vegetables to roast with the ham, first, quietly humming to himself.
shiromadoushi: (Yo!)

[personal profile] shiromadoushi 2009-12-23 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Bakura nodded. "Just let me know if you need any help!" he smiled. "I did most the prep work for mine already so that I could help up with everyone else!"
notadartboard: (why yes i'm a cook)

[personal profile] notadartboard 2009-12-23 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
"Uh huh," Sanji murmured distractedly. "Let me know when you get done with your own stuff, I'll see if there's anything then."

He was used to working around other cooks, at least, so having others in the kitchen wasn't a problem at all. But he fell into a sort of concentration on his own menu for the time being.
