Remus had been to enough Christmas parties in his lifetime to know when one would end disastrously, including those that had been specifically dated to avoided interfering with other Christmas plans that the guests might have. This was one of them. But his tolerance had kept him quiet, the happy act of cleaning and decorating taken to as easily as any other task he did.

The twins had also been enlisted to help, given the important task of stringing a length of bright red ribbon and pine up the staircase to the second floor. The soft white lights that followed were magic. In fact, none of the lights, save for whatever lamps or overhead lights that Miles insisted upon, were run by electricity, and many were candles, kept only from setting anything ablaze by a flame-freezing charm.

By the time the morning of the party rolled around, the house looked as if it had been pulled straight out of a Christmas card, Remus borrowing from what he remembered of Christmases as Hogwarts and the Burrow, including a single bit of mistletoe in the entry. The snow helped, piling nicely (if in an oddly organized fashion) outside thanks to a little help from Miles, adding to the image; if nothing else, Remus was happy with it, the certainty that he would wind up having to transfigure another person into some sort of object nagging at the back of his mind.

Tin whistles, toy rocking horses, and sprigs of mistletoe were likely going to be very common later in the evening, he mused, tapping his wand rhythmically against the palm of his hand in thought as he checked everything over once more, walking through the sitting and dining rooms and out into the backyard where the tree house had been built out of ice and wood into the tree there. The floating green structures that Kyle Rayner had promised to provide were still missing, but they would be there soon enough.

He pocketed his wand and walked back into the house, shaking free the snow from his boots, and glancing at the clock. People who had offered their assistance had been asked to come early, which meant that the kitchen was soon going to turn into a madhouse, the extra stove only offering so much help. It also meant he had best make tea before he was banned from the room.

It took longer than he would have liked, going up and down those stairs and squeezing past people. He hoped to not have to do that again, or all the sounds that passed to him on contact would be giving him a headache. Longer still, as he brought the rest of what he had prepared for others with him and set it by his sofa seat before returning to the wall with the woefully unwrapped box of stationery. It was his turn to seem embarrassed, frowning at his gift for a second. He'd forgotten about that wrapping part.

But that wasn't the point of the thing, right? So when he looked up, it was a placid smile as he offered it to her. "I apologize for not asking what you would like and taking the risk of guessing."

She took the box into her hands, fingers running over it like it had been the most precious gift she had ever been given - and her expression stated much the same. The fact he had thought of her enough to get her something was more than enough, it hadn't even occurred to her that it wasn't wrapped.

"Thank you, Blue. It's wonderful. And here."

She took that moment to reach into her purse that hung from her side, that she really only had to carry around the gifts she brought, until she found the one wrapped in light blue paper. Each was it's own color, to help her keep them straight.
It was big enough for the small gift (http://www.mineralminers.com/html/sugs151b.jpg) inside the box the wrapping paper hid, and the piece of paper explaining the rare Sugilite stone it was made of, and the healing and powerful properties it held.
It had seemed fitting to him the moment she had seen it.

"Merry Christmas."

Her reaction was infectious, filling him with a warm contentedness, that he was a bit slow to realize what she was doing, fishing through her purse. Oh--that's right. He accepted the box with a gracious nod, taking pause to examine the paper before even thinking to tear it off. The stone therein, though, was much more stunning, and he turned it in hand carefully as he stared at it.

"This..." he trailed off before he hardly began. Was this from the earth? The ground underfoot? At length, he could only think to finish with, "is remarkable, Raven."

Her smile turns into a rather beaming one - she was really thrilled that he liked it, as she always held that fear that her gifts wouldn't fit their preferences. It seemed she had dodged a bullet with this one.

"I'm glad you like it. It's one of the only stones rumored to bring light into the lives of it's owner. I felt it was about time you were given back what you so easily give to others."

Such a thing to say...Blue could hardly not be moved by that. His eyebrows furrowed as he tried to keep a handle on that swell of emotion, looking back at the stone in hand. If these kinds of things were on Terra, too...He wanted Physis to see it. He wanted all of them to. Badly.

"I do not think," he said at length, clearing his throat of that emotion, "that I will ever find myself...with a day there is not something wonderful, here." He looked back up at Raven. "Though I could never ask for...more than your friendship, this...is a perfect gift. Thank you..."

Had she been in any other physical state, she would have simply smiled in return and let what he said be, but unfortunately she was much more emotional than that now.

The smile was there, but so was the moisture that welled up in her eyes. Damn it, Raven, not here, there were large number of people around and none of them needed to see you get weepy. She took enough of a breath to steady herself before speaking.

"You're... very welcome."

He wasn't blind to what his thoughts and feelings were doing to her, and Blue's expression waxed apologetic as he returned the stone to its box.

"Forgive me," he said, leaning closer to speak softly and settle a hand on her shoulder. A smile. "It will not do to have a misunderstanding with your companion if I were to cause you to cry."

She smiled weakly in response to that, tossing a slight look out of the corner of her eye at Rimmer. He was more than used to seeing her cry - hell, he made her cry on a regular basis. But still.

"Thank you. I suppose it's just been awhile since someone's said something like that to me. I needed to hear it."

That revelation didn't sit well with him; a faint frown, just for a moment and it was gone. Perhaps that was only out of friendship's implications, and not outright neglect of her. It was not something he wanted to question--not at the moment, at least.

His hand withdrew, turning and himself leaning against that wall. Blind to the side where she stood, his gaze drifted back down to the box in hand, smiling fondly.

"I understand the complaints...of excess during these traditions, but. I think, overall, I like them. The good outweighs."
