Remus had been to enough Christmas parties in his lifetime to know when one would end disastrously, including those that had been specifically dated to avoided interfering with other Christmas plans that the guests might have. This was one of them. But his tolerance had kept him quiet, the happy act of cleaning and decorating taken to as easily as any other task he did.

The twins had also been enlisted to help, given the important task of stringing a length of bright red ribbon and pine up the staircase to the second floor. The soft white lights that followed were magic. In fact, none of the lights, save for whatever lamps or overhead lights that Miles insisted upon, were run by electricity, and many were candles, kept only from setting anything ablaze by a flame-freezing charm.

By the time the morning of the party rolled around, the house looked as if it had been pulled straight out of a Christmas card, Remus borrowing from what he remembered of Christmases as Hogwarts and the Burrow, including a single bit of mistletoe in the entry. The snow helped, piling nicely (if in an oddly organized fashion) outside thanks to a little help from Miles, adding to the image; if nothing else, Remus was happy with it, the certainty that he would wind up having to transfigure another person into some sort of object nagging at the back of his mind.

Tin whistles, toy rocking horses, and sprigs of mistletoe were likely going to be very common later in the evening, he mused, tapping his wand rhythmically against the palm of his hand in thought as he checked everything over once more, walking through the sitting and dining rooms and out into the backyard where the tree house had been built out of ice and wood into the tree there. The floating green structures that Kyle Rayner had promised to provide were still missing, but they would be there soon enough.

He pocketed his wand and walked back into the house, shaking free the snow from his boots, and glancing at the clock. People who had offered their assistance had been asked to come early, which meant that the kitchen was soon going to turn into a madhouse, the extra stove only offering so much help. It also meant he had best make tea before he was banned from the room.

"I must admit, I don't know the proper etiquette either, at least not this world's. So I shall be selfish and ask that you would open them now, so that I might see the look on your face."

Liadrin rested her hands over his. "You should not have bought me anything, your company is always enough."

The touch made him just about melt into a puddle right there on the spot. "Well, then! Let's see what we have here..."

He unwrapped the squarish case first, and his reaction was unmistakable - not only did his visible eye widen, but his mouth gaped open so far that his unlit cigarette fell out. He completely forgot about the lady beside him as he fell to admiring and caressing the set of knives in the case for a few minutes.

After a bit, he stammered, "...I...I don't deserve such a kindness. Not from my lady. This is...this is incredible..."

His expression was more than enough to please her. Liadrin laughed and covered her mouth with her hand; ears upright and cheeks slightly flushed as she nodded to him at his side. "You deserve it. Trust me."

After a moment she added, "I suppose I don't need to ask if you like it."

There was really only one thing he could do: Sanji bowed and took her hand, kissing it gently.

"Thank you. For everything." He straightened up and tucked a bit of his hair behind his right ear. "Now I absolutely insist that you get the gift I have for you...when I can find Usopp." The thought that his friend might have forgotten the presents did occur to him, but he put it aside for now.

She turned her wrist up to catch his chin, drawing him close to set a kiss gently on his lips. "I shall graciously accept it when you do find him."

...and then dissolved into a pile of mush, glowing with the biggest smile ever. His mind kept babbling she kissed me, she kissed me, she kissed me! When he could work his mouth properly, Sanji was close to squealing with joy. "And that is the best gift of all! Better than all the kitchen supplies in the world. Thank you, thank you...Liadrin."

"You're welcome, Sanji." She smiled, feeling warmth rise in her chest as she clasped her hands over her heart. The shared joy reminded her of the Light, reminded of her home, and she took a moment to catch her breath before speaking again.

"I wish you all the best."

"And you. Happy...winter whatever." Sanji chuckled and leaned in to give her a quick peck on the cheek. "I think I'd better go store these in the kitchen before the master of the house sees them and corners me to talk shop. I'll be back in a bit with your gift~!"

"Veil." She added as he moved away, not really caring whether he heard it or not. From the day that he'd arrived he had been nothing but kind to her, which at the time was comforting in comparison with those around her who wore her thin with complaints and defiance. Liadrin set her hands on her hips and sighed; what in the name of the Light was she doing? He was a human. She's spent so much time taking revenge on his kind. For all the talk of forgiveness, for all the lectures from the Naaru and their priests, was it really fair to allow herself such familiarity?

"I suppose it cannot be helped." Liadrin sighed to herself, dropping down to sit on a nearby couch.

It wasn't too terribly long before Sanji returned, having had to replenish some dishes and then accost Usopp before finding where the gifts had been deposited. He had with him a small box, clearly professionally-wrapped as well - all the best jewelry shops offered that. He swept over and perched himself on the couch next to her, holding out the box in one hand. "For you."

Liadrin took the package from him, holding it gently with the very tips of her fingers. "May I?" She asked, already poised to pull open the wrapping. She knew from what everyone had said that this evening was not the proper one for opening gifts, but this was not her holiday, either, and she wanted to know what he had bought her so badly.

"Please do," he replied, trying to control his beaming smile (and failing). He was sure a lady of her stature probably had jewels galore - jewels of the kind that would set Nami drooling, no less - but somehow, the little silver pendant shaped like a whorled seashell, cradling a blue-green faceted stone, made Sanji think of her instantly. It really made no sense, since he was the one from a seafaring world. He had gotten it without a second thought.

He really wanted to see her reaction, now.

[identity profile] liadrin.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Her movements were quick and precise, she managed to remove every last scrap of paper and ribbon without so much as a tear or a fumble. The box itself came last, of course, and as she lifted the lid her emerald eyes widened in awe. Air sucked between her teeth, she gazed silently at the necklace, too moved to speak.

"...Oh Sanji," She breathed, managing to blink a few times, "It's breath-taking."

"You really like it?" he asked to be sure. "It reminded me a little of home. I didn't know how elves feel about the ocean, though..."

[identity profile] liadrin.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
"I love it."

Liadrin picked the necklace up and began struggling to clasp it shut around the back of her neck. "My kin sailed across the entire ocean. Mighty ships with beautiful sails, all in the hopes of finding a place where we could be safe and left in peace." She paused, still fiddling with the pendant, unable to successfully lock it in place.

[personal profile] notadartboard 2009-12-24 05:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh, here. Let me." Sanji moved in to assist, sweeping aside her hair with a hand in order to find the clasp and close it. He was beside himself with joy that she liked it, and found himself briefly wondering if Nami would ever accept a gift like this from him...without checking to see how valuable the stone was and if she could sell it...

He shook it off and smiled brightly. "There. Now you can think of the sea whenever you wear it."

[identity profile] liadrin.livejournal.com 2009-12-24 09:05 pm (UTC)(link)
"I shall think of you, instead. A far more valuable treasure than any azure ocean." Liadrin moved to the nearest window, tilting her head from side to side, admiring the pendant in her reflection. True, she had owned many more valuable objects in Azeroth, but it was as Koltira had said, the thought behind a gift was what truly mattered.

"I hope you won't forget me when you return home, either." She said with a smile, still watching the glass.

[personal profile] notadartboard 2009-12-24 10:46 pm (UTC)(link)
It looked like Sanji was about to be out-charmed by the object of his charm. "I hope so, too," he said, keeping a friendly lilt to his voice. "I don't know what it's going to be like when that happens. But I think I'm not going to worry about that just now."

[identity profile] liadrin.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 02:49 am (UTC)(link)
Liadrin went silent at this. She hadn't the slightest idea what to say anymore. If it was jealousy pricking at the back of her mind, she could think of no way to solve it. Liadrin was glad he had a dream to return to, of course, but all the same, some part of her was unhappy about it.

"I...should let you return to work."

[personal profile] notadartboard 2009-12-25 03:05 am (UTC)(link)
"Hm?" Sanji wondered at the change in demeanor. "Come on, now, I don't want to see you frown. This is a party and a holiday, let's be happy." He went to her and took her hand again, bowing over it - he didn't want to push his chances, after all. "I'll be around all night. Don't leave without a kiss goodnight~..."

[identity profile] liadrin.livejournal.com 2009-12-25 03:28 am (UTC)(link)
"I am happy. I've no reason to feel anything but happy." Which she thought was true; her sudden mood swing was completely irrational and he had no desire to bring down his night in the slightest. "You would not mind me stopping you once more, before I go?"
notadartboard: (stupidest grin)

[personal profile] notadartboard 2009-12-25 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
"Please do," he insisted, grinning. "And if there's anything I can bring you, let me know~..."
