DUEL MONSTERS TOURNAMENT ♠ ROUND 1

WHERE: Central Park and Harbor
WHEN: Saturday March, 20th early afternoon

SUMMARY: Round 1 of the duel monster's tournament.
FORMAT: Whatever you want!

Months of planning and recreating an empire from the ground up was finally reaching its climax. Fireworks shot into the sky as the workers ran out of the way trying to avoid the large screen to which the firework stands were attached. If there was still anyone who had not heard that a Duel Monsters Tournament was being held in the city, the sights and sounds quickly informed them.

The same set up was found in the two locations. One at the center of Central Park and the other stretched next to the water by the harbor. The rules the duelists had been given told them where to meet and when to be sure they would be there for the beginning. Since Kaiba couldn’t be in two places at once, especially as he had his own duel to prepare for, a video had been pre-recorded to start the event. The screens turned on at the same time, the KaibaCorp logo flashing across the screen. It disappears to show a montage of duels fought by different monsters. Those who are paying close attention may even notice cards that Kaiba could have only found out about in the City. The montage ends with a Blue Eyes White Dragon destroying everything in its path and causing the screen to fade to white.

The blank screen suddenly changes again to a video of Kaiba. “Welcome to this City’s first chance at a Duel Monster’s Tournament!” it started. “You have had plenty of time to prepare, and now it’s time to show exactly what you can do. At the end of this announcement the tournament will officially start.

“Find your opponent and duel! The winner will go on to the next round. The loser can go home. You have all been given copies of the rules. Any cheating will be punished.”

The Kaiba in the video paused, emphasing a big-brother idea about how cheating would be caught and punished. The look changed into a smirk as he threw his hand forward and dramatically proclaimed,

“Game Start!”

"Duel."

Aki's dusk disc activated as well as she lifted it up. Dealing her hand, she looks at her cards for some time, weighing what to do, before going for it.

"I'm bringing forth Black Garden, and placing one card face down." All around them, an overgrowth of thorns and vines suddenly sprang up, covering the playing area like a dome. For some reason, when the vines touched the ground, scraping noises could be heard as the playing field roots itself into the ground. "Turn end." (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Black_Garden) ()

Billy drew his hand, looking at it. She had that face down card. He didn't know what it was and that worried him slightly. But, she was a kid. Inching away from the thorns, Billy frowned.

"Right. I'll place one card face down and summon Hydrogeddon (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Hydrogeddon) in attack mode." The water dinosaur came onto the field, roaring slightly. Cool. "Uh...Hydrogeddon, attack her life points. I think I can do that." The dinosaur roared and charged towards Aki.

Was he even doing this right?

As soon as Hydrogeddon was summoned, something (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Rose_Token) popped up beside Aki. Aki's eyes widened at the giant dinosaur, but she then shook her head as the monster's attack suddenly halved, due to the effect of Black Garden.

"Trap card activate!" The face down card turns over before the monster hits her. "Doppleganger (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Doppelganger). You take 800 also."

Billy frowned, looking at Aki. Wait, what the heck was that flower thing? Obviously, he didn't read the fine print on any card. Billy nodded, as his life points dropped down. That made sense. Still, he couldn't shake this weirdo feeling in his body. It was like the monster actually hurt him. That was strange.

"I guess it's your turn now."

Aki drew, looking at her cards long and hard. It was pretty obvious that despite her love for the deck, she was still trying to think of what to do, how to play, what to play. After a long wait, she finally decides.

"I summon Twilight Rose Knight (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Twilight_Rose_Knight) to the field!" Thus it happened - and then up popped two roses on Billy's side, while on Aki's side, something else (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Violet_Witch) popped up. "And with my Knight's second effect, I summon Violet Witch!"

A pause.

"Turn end."

As he drew his cards, Billy frowned slightly. "Okay. I'm putting Hydrogeddon in defense mode and summoning another monster in face-down defense mode." Another card appeared on the field as the dinosaur swapped into a more defensive position.

"Turn end."

She didn't hesitate.

"Draw!" She puts down another card. "I summon Lord Poison! (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Lord_Poison) Lord Poison, attack and destroy his Hydrogeddon!"

Unless he had a trap or spell under his sleeve, 400 more points would be coming off once his monster was destroyed. The creature leaped forward, talons outstretched, and slashed.

Billy frowned, as Lord Poison killed his monster. Well. He had squat at the moment. That wasn't helpful. He simply looked at Aki, biting his lip awkwardly as his monster was destroyed. He still had the face-down card, though.

"Turn end."

Billy drew another card, frowning. "I activate my face down card, Magical Mallet! (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Magical_Mallet). I'll return two cards from my hand to my deck, shuffle my deck, then draw back two cards." Putting the two cards on top of his deck, Billy started shuffling and then drew two more cards.

"I'll play one more monster in face-down mode. And with that, turn end."

"Draw!"

At this, she draws. And her eyes light up.

"Twilight Rose Knight!" She raises her hand up with the card, then brings it down onto her disc. "I tune you with my Rose Tokens!"

3 + 2 + 2 = 7

Suddenly, All of the cards on the field - Billy's, Aki's, the Garden - dissipate into nothing. Only Aki's two Rose Tokens and Knight remain, transforming into transparent holograms before they, too, disappear, sucked into a bright light.

"I synchro summon...Black Rose Dragon! (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Black_Rose_Dragon)"

The light suddenly emits rose petals and a powerful wind, knocking the few spectators that have gathered a couple feet and sending debris everywhere. With its entrance secured, the dragon itself appears, and lets out a roar as it looks at Billy. It looks very real, and very, very mad for some reason.

Damn damn damn damn, that isn't good at all. Billy bites his lip, looking from the empty side of the field to the bright light. Suddenly, a strong wind came from the light, knocking Billy hard on his butt. Ouch. That hurt. That wasn't good at all, especially considering the fact that there was a freaking DRAGON looking at him.

"Lemme guess, that thing's gonna attack my life points?"

"Yes!" Aki pointed. "But I'm not finished. I use Thorn of Hatred (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Thorn_of_Malice"), adding 600 lifepoints to my Black Rose Dragon!"

In other words...yeah. Billy was screwed.

"Black Rose Dragon," The dragon roared, spitting out fire. Yes, real fire. "Attack his lifepoints directly!"

"You're kidding me!" Billy yelled, sighing slightly. He looked over at Aki, scowl on his face. He lost. To a six-year-old. This was awful.

As the dragon breathed fire at him, Billy dodged out of the way, mostly out of reflex and long years of dodging cars from Captain Hammer. However, part of the fire caught Billy's jacket on fire. Letting out a small yelp, he threw his jacket onto the ground, stamping on it to put it out. That was real fire! That was honest to God fire! It felt hot and everything! What the hell was going on here?

He looked at his arms, quickly inspecting them. First degree burns. Thank God. "What the hell was that?!" Billy yelled, looking over at Aki. "My jacket got caught on fire and I got burned!"

Aki doesn't answer. Instead, she turns and runs, rubbing her eyes. She wanted to win. She didn't like when her powers did that. She didn't need her dad. She was scared-

Meanwhile, spectators began to look around and talk worriedly. That girl was a superhuman too. And she didn't stop that fire. What was wrong with her? What was she? Did she really just hurt that poor man?

Maggie had promised to come and watch Aki duel (http://community.livejournal.com/capeandcowl/1892925.html?thread=170577725#t170577725) and was looking on nervously from the stands.

Seeing the endgame and both Aki, Billy, and the crowd's reaction, Maggie jumped out of her seat and pushed her way to the edge. "Aki! What happened?"

Billy was freaking out slightly. It didn't occur to him that it might not be a good idea to cause a scene in front of the crowd and potentially freak out the kid. All that was occurring to him was that he had burns on his arm and his jacket was now crispy.

"Her dragon set me on fire! I thought these things were supposed to be holograms, how the heck did it burn me?!"

Maggie stayed near where she saw Aki, but looked over to Billy. "I don't know, but it must be a malfunction in the hologram lasers."

She had a feeling that wasn't the case, but she was interested in both calming him and Aki down, not to mention crowd control. "Do you need a medic?"

Billy frowned, looking at his duel disk than at his arm. "Nah, I'm fine. I've had worse. These are just burns, I'll get some ice and some aloe and I think I'll be fine." He hoped he would be fine.

Somewhere nearby, Aki was hiding behind a tree, rubbing her eyes. Unfortunately for her, people were gathering and staring at her, like she was a freak. A monster.

"Go away!" she screamed, reaching for her duel disc. Instantly people began to back up.

She nodded. "Cold water may be better than ice," she advised. She frowned, otherwise awaiting Aki's response. Someone tried to demand to her what she knew about the situation, and Maggie soundly ignored them.

Aki's reaction to the crowd was a simple one, especially in light of people becoming angrier as she refused to answer their questions. Finally, it became too much. The group was small but they became more and more aggressive until, finally, one grabbed at her arm.

That set her off. The next thing anyone knew, there was a giant rose (http://yugioh.wikia.com/wiki/Rose_Tentacles) grabbing at people with its tentacles. This caused those people who weren't caught to scream and scatter almost instantly; those who were caught could only scream.

A soon as there was an opening for her to leave, however, Aki bolted.

"Aki!" Maggie needed to chase after her, but she couldn't let the bystanders remain in danger.

Shouting with an authority she was unaware of having, she barked to anyone still around to get out of the way. She then thrust out a hand, paper shooting out of her sleeve like water out of a geyser. More monsters wouldn't do well, she thought, so the paper just formed a massive wall that snaked rapidly toward the rose creature, carefully wending its way between it and anyone nearby and keeping it separated from the crowd.

Paper reinforced by paper mastery becomes durable and strong as carbon steel--but remains "paper thin"--resulting in something strong and sharp enough to slice through nearly anything. Maggie's control was good enough that she would not cut through anything she didn't want to, but the edge of the paper wall sped toward the rose's tentacles, hopefully keenly slicing them off so that anyone trapped on the side--now blocked from the monster by the wall itself--could free themselves.

Once she was sure everyone was free, if she was able to do so, Maggie commanded the wall to wrap itself around the rose monster to keep it bound. That was more a trick Michelle or Anita would use, and she wasn't sure how long it would hold, but it would have to do. She then bolted off in the direction Aki ran, hoping she had not gotten far.

Thankfully, the monster seemed to dissipate into pixels after a few minutes. All of the paper fluttered to the ground in a large pile.

Meanwhile, Aki was running. She hated everyone. And everyone hated her. Just like back home. Monster, that's what they saw her as! It didn't matter what anyone else said...

Maggie had in fact been yelled at before for using her powers in public. It was never really something she worried about, for all that it might have made sense.

But she found for once she was worried about excessive power use; when Aki was already freaking to the reaction of the crowd, she didn't want to make the crowd any more nervous than she had to. So she leapt onto a park bench instead, and then scrambled to pull herself up onto a retaining wall, where hopefully she could spot Aki's crimson hair in the area.

Her mind took her back to the time Anita flipped out after seeing the holographic flashback in the British Library. Michelle and Maggie had been able to catch her and calm her down--but she had been Anita's big sister for two and a half years at that point, and Anita was over twice Aki's age. Maggie fretted inwardly that she would neither have the words nor the knowhow to be able to calm the little girl down, let alone find her. She wished to the depths of her soul that Michelle would magically appear and solve everything, but that was not to be.
