DUEL MONSTERS TOURNAMENT ♠ ROUND 1

WHO: ANYONE AND EVERYONE
WHERE: Central Park and Harbor
WHEN: Saturday March, 20th early afternoon
WARNING: Swearing and card games
SUMMARY: Round 1 of the duel monster's tournament.
FORMAT: Whatever you want!

Months of planning and recreating an empire from the ground up was finally reaching its climax. Fireworks shot into the sky as the workers ran out of the way trying to avoid the large screen to which the firework stands were attached. If there was still anyone who had not heard that a Duel Monsters Tournament was being held in the city, the sights and sounds quickly informed them.

The same set up was found in the two locations. One at the center of Central Park and the other stretched next to the water by the harbor. The rules the duelists had been given told them where to meet and when to be sure they would be there for the beginning. Since Kaiba couldn’t be in two places at once, especially as he had his own duel to prepare for, a video had been pre-recorded to start the event. The screens turned on at the same time, the KaibaCorp logo flashing across the screen. It disappears to show a montage of duels fought by different monsters. Those who are paying close attention may even notice cards that Kaiba could have only found out about in the City. The montage ends with a Blue Eyes White Dragon destroying everything in its path and causing the screen to fade to white.

The blank screen suddenly changes again to a video of Kaiba. “Welcome to this City’s first chance at a Duel Monster’s Tournament!” it started. “You have had plenty of time to prepare, and now it’s time to show exactly what you can do. At the end of this announcement the tournament will officially start.

“Find your opponent and duel! The winner will go on to the next round. The loser can go home. You have all been given copies of the rules. Any cheating will be punished.”

The Kaiba in the video paused, emphasing a big-brother idea about how cheating would be caught and punished. The look changed into a smirk as he threw his hand forward and dramatically proclaimed,

Game Start!

(Make your own threads here for your individual duels. You can log as much of the action as you want. Remember you need to PM me with the winner of each duel before Sunday 11pm CST (whether or not the log is finished). If I don’t have a winner I will proclaim one for you to keep things moving. In case you've forgotten the brackets are here)

Kaiba VS Crow

[identity profile] teppoudama-crow.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
[Crow is standing somewhere near the shore, enjoying the sea breeze, the weight of a duel disk on his arm (just as it should be) and the knowledge and anticipation of the upcoming challenge. When he closes his eyes he can almost pretend that he is in the Satellite, close to Daedalus Bridge, that when he opens them again he'll see their work, the completed bridge. Of course he doesn't, but it still would be nice.

He shakes his head, turning it towards the screen when video starts up. A part of him feels a bit nervous - this is his first totally official tournament. The only thing he has done that would come close, would be dueling in the street war of Satellite, under the name of Team Satisfaction when Kiryu had been still…

No. He would not go there, it would just end in a headache. He'd get enough of that should he end up facing Kiryu, which he wasn't sure was that good of an idea. On the other hand avoiding his old friend was definitely not an option either.

Frowning slightly he listens to the announcement - Kaiba sure has a way to hold peoples attention. He stretches a bit when the video ends, replacing the frown with a predatory grin, stalking of to find himself an opponent. Kiryu or not, first and foremost he was here to have fun~]

Alright, let's get this started!

[identity profile] teppoudama-crow.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 10:23 am (UTC)(link)
Crow decided to stay at the edge of the crowd; far far easier to take his time and pick out an opponent that way. Of course it didn't take long for him to take note of Kaiba - the white coat and the confident-bordering-arrogant step made him more than stand out, especially to Crow after having (again) lived in the same house as Jack for over six months now. Honestly the coat, the demeanor, the way he moved - dye his hair blond and he and Jack pass as weird sort of twins. Of course there where some large differences from what Crow had seen to now - Kaiba wasn't quite as loud as Jack (or perhaps just a different sort of loud) and far less approachable as his housemate (who liked to pretend that he didn't care, but didn't fool anyone, especially not someone who had grown up with him). But from what Crow knew, their style of dueling was rather similar (power-deck with a dragon-type focus).

Interesting. Yes, the more he thought about it the more appealing the thought of challenging Kaiba became. For one because not many people in his time could boast to have dueled the Seto Kaiba. For another because he should probably pay him back for calling him a novice - he had promised so much over the com, hadn't he? Kaiba may be a big fish for a first round opponent, but certainly not more than he could chew, in Crow's opinion at least.

Quietly he followed the taller duelist towards the water, grinning even more predatory than before as he decided to call out and make himself be noticed.

"Looking for someone, Kaiba?"

[identity profile] teppoudama-crow.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 04:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Crow raised an amused eyebrow. At another time a similar comment might have set him of, but here this was to be expected. Trashtalk was as (if not more) common in the streets as in a tournament. He shrugged easily, letting himself be bothered was like showing weakness. Showing weakness before or in a competitive duel was certain death.

"So you keep saying. Care to let me prove you wrong?"

Alastair vs. Kiryu

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-20 04:01 am (UTC)(link)
Having only watched KaibaCorp sanctioned tournaments on television before, Alastair made sure to get there in time for the kickoff. But he sat on his motorcycle off to one side with his helmet on, the visor flipped up so he could hear the announcement. He snorted his pure disdain for the ego-tastic, flashy opening and slapped down the visor before starting up the bike. He was going to attract some attention before picking an opponent, already bound to his promise not to shake down Kaiba right off the bat.

It was a gorgeous day to be dueling. Unseasonably warm, in the 70's, as it had been the last day or so. Alastair had spent much of his free time at home (in between checking up on Bakura) down in the garage, cleaning and tuning his motorcycle after its winter's nap, so it was in prime condition today. He gunned the engine and tore through the dispersing crowd, scattering newbies on his way closer to the water. He picked a good spot and screeched to a stop, the tails of his favorite gray trenchcoat swishing around him like a cloak and falling over the back of the seat. His bootleg duel disk was on his left arm, poised and ready, as he sat astride the red Ducati in wait for a worthy challenger.

Kiryu had arrived before almost everyone, too excited not to get there early. He couldn't help it; dueling was his life and he'd been doing far too little of it in the past year. He didn't really care if it was a tournament or a everyday street duel, it was enough that the opportunity was there. And of course, with the number of duelists from his time showing up, he wouldn't miss it for anything.

Being early had it's advantages too. He could watch everyone else arrive and see just who would be around. His attention caught on Crow especially, but he wanted to save that duel for later. Let Crow worry about the possibly of facing his Earthbound God for a while. He wasn't about to tell his old friend he couldn't actually do anything with it here.

He listened to Kaiba's little speech with only passing attention. Kaiba wasn't nearly as interesting as Alastair. He watched Alastair's stunt with a faint smile and headed over, cape billowing out a bit behind him.

"Showing off?" he teased once he was close enough.

[personal profile] hackeralastair 2010-03-20 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Alastair pulled off his helmet and shook out his red hair, putting on the first genuine smile he'd worn in weeks. "Why shouldn't I?" he teased back. "This little baby's running perfectly and I'm in the mood for some knock-down, drag-out duels."

He tilted his head slightly, assessing Kiryu. For all their time together, as friends and other things, even battling beside each other, they hadn't yet actually faced each other in a serious duel. Alastair had his eyes on a bigger prize, but he wanted a challenge to get him warmed up, not some optimistic newb. "What do you think?" he offered. "Got your eye on anyone for the first round, yet?"

Kiryu shrugged, glancing around again. "Not really. The only person I'm after can wait. He should know what I'm capable of before I challenge him." And if Crow didn't pay attention at all to his duels, too bad for him. He couldn't imagine it wouldn't be obvious if he could summon his God, after all.

He smirked back at Alastair, activating his duel Disk. "Think you can satisfy me?"

Juudai VS Johan

[identity profile] miraclefusion.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 06:07 am (UTC)(link)
Truth be told, Juudai had only been in a real tournament once in his life -- and that had gotten very much interrupted by having to save the world from a laser satellite, causing him to miss the conclusion of the whole thing. He was particularly excited about this one, as a result, and he could feel the spirits in his deck preparing themselves for some well-needed exercise.

He couldn't stop grinning the whole time as he practically dashed down the street, looking for anyone with a duel disk on hand. Cheesy as the opening recording was, he couldn't help but feel stoked by how nostalgic it sounded. Somehow, it just made the flame within him burn even hotter as he scouted for an eligible opponent.

Re: Juudai VS Johan

[identity profile] guardianrainbow.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 06:12 am (UTC)(link)
Johan had been in more than one tournament; he'd missed out on Genex, but there had been others, most especially the one where he'd met the Gem Beasts afterward. He didn't think this one would have something that awesome awaiting at the end, but it didn't matter. He wanted to have a good duel.

His family was ready to do anything and everything they could to help him, of course, so all of them were keeping their eyes out for anyone who might be suitable.

It wasn't that surprising, either, when Ruby Carbuncle sounded the familiar trill, and Johan caught sight of an even more familiar head of hair. "Yo, Juudai!" he called out, waving towards his friend.

[identity profile] miraclefusion.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 06:18 am (UTC)(link)
Juudai perked up as he heard the call. "Oh, Johan!" he greeted as he trotted over, putting on a sly expression. "Well, you know, I was kinda hoping the two of us would last until at least the second round, but I guess I can beat you now and get it over with." Obviously a pseudo-arrogant statement meant to tease him, but some of that arrogance, it seemed, wasn't being all that exaggerated.

[identity profile] guardianrainbow.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Johan's grin was as sly as Juudai's, with challenging gleaming from his turquoise eyes. "Funny, I was thinking the exact same thing. Isn't it strange how our minds work?" He had won one duel against Juudai here already, but if he could pull off another one, especially in a tournament situation, that would be awesome. Granted, if he didn't, there would always be another day.

Billy vs. Aki

[identity profile] amonsterami.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 05:50 pm (UTC)(link)
There were so many people there to watch. So many men, women and children. Children with their parents, all happy and smiling and being a family and-

On the way to her duel, one of the kids passing by with a big cotton candy mound had asked where her parents were. This put her in a not-so-good mood, and put the kid on the ground several yards away with several thorn cuts on his arm and face and his snack on the ground. She walked away as the kid started crying for his mom and dad. Just like she cried and no one back home answered.

So Aki entered the area, looking sullen and upset, waiting for her opponent to show up.

[identity profile] badhorsefan.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Billy entered the park, looking around. His deck was so good. He knew so already. So what if he didn't know that much about this game and so what if he probably didn't know the rules...he would do just fine. He knew that he would. Right? Right.

His eyes lingered on a little kid, holding a duel disk. You had to be kidding him. He walked over to the girl, looking at her. "Are you Aki?"

[identity profile] amonsterami.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 08:55 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mm." The response was quiet, unenthusiastic. But there was something in it that might have seemed foreboding, if anyone could pick up on it. "You're my opponent, aren't you."

[identity profile] badhorsefan.livejournal.com 2010-03-20 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
A little kid. His opponent was a little kid. What. The. Heck. He hated this Kaiba guy more and more now. "Yeah, I'm Billy. I guess we're opponents or something."

Bakura vs Ruka

[personal profile] shiromadoushi 2010-03-20 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
To say Bakura was nervous would be the largest of understatements.

He had been worried about the tournament since Kaiba had announced it. Tournaments never went well for him, something always went horribly wrong. And with the Ring's Voice in the City...

So when Safeguard hadn't met him as he had said he would, Bakura assumed the worst. Something else horrible must have happened to his friend. The fear was all but confirmed when his attempt to contact him on the network went unanswered. Not good, not good, not good!

Calm down, calm down, if something had happened, Vector would have posted something, right? Right. Maybe he just forgot his communicator. Or it wasn't working. Or he was just in the shower or something. Duel a round, and if he still hasn't shown or responded...

He took a deep breath, trying to steady himself. He could do this... Just because something horrible had happened every other tournament he had been present for didn't mean that something horrible would happen at this one....

Right?

For as much as Duel Monsters had been a central aspect of Ruka's life growing up, she honestly didn't like dueling all that much; she hadn't competed in the Fortune Cup willingly, and had wanted to sit this one out just as much. Especially after everything that had been going on recently: she'd somehow jumped forward a month in the City with no recollection of what occurred in the interim, the undead had risen and fallen (again), and many of the people most important to her had either been exPorted, or replaced by alternate selves with no recollection of this place—and, subsequently, no recollection of her.

Her heart was aching, but, just like a month before, she knew there was a more important reason for her to be here. If Aki, as vulnerable and as volatile as she was, was competing, Ruka needed to stay close as possible in case something happened. If she wanted to save this Aki from becoming that closed-off woman, Ruka would have to shield that girl's heart from harm, and keep the doors to that heart propped open until she could keep them open on her own.

Determined to meet Aki head-on when the time came, Ruka latched her customized duel disk to her wrist during Kaiba's speech, wondering who she'd have to face along the way.

[personal profile] shiromadoushi 2010-03-24 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Bakura's disc, oddly enough, was being carried in his right hand, the weight of the machine being more stress than he wanted to put on his arm until he had to. How embarrassing would it be to wear out his arm before he'd even started dueling! And it gave him something to fidget with and not look like he was fidgeting. Though it was probably still very obvious.

He paused, spotting a familiar hair in the crowd and gave a wave. "Ruka-chan!" he called, putting on his best 'nothing's wrong' face as he smiled.

Her head turned at the sound of her name, though it took her a second to spot Ryou waving to her. Smiling, Ruka headed his way, breaking away from the crowd.

"Ryou!" she greeted pleasantly once in range, though her eyes were quickly set to the task of checking him over. Though they were not terribly close friends who spoke often, she worried for him, especially after these past few days. "You're competing, too?"

Calvin vs. Quatre HANDWAVE

[personal profile] magicalworld 2010-03-21 01:39 pm (UTC)(link)
[Quatre is super distracted by all the crap going on in his life right now, too much so for card games, and so Calvin is able to pull out a win over him. Calvin is very very happy and maybe a little surprised that he actually won but he will never admit that]

IKKI VS SLIPSTREAM- handwaved

[identity profile] holymedaroli.livejournal.com 2010-03-21 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
[It's not the neatest match in the world, but Ikki manages to beat Slipstream at the last second with a few cards up his sleeve]

Metabee vs. Anzu HANDWAVE

[identity profile] punmanarmy.livejournal.com 2010-03-22 12:52 am (UTC)(link)
[Metabee is way too awful at strategy and his deck is far too slapdash to do particularly well, so though he puts his heart in it, Anzu's greater experience and time spent working with Yuugi on her deck pulls her through with a fairly neat win.]

Ring Spirit vs. NPC

[personal profile] stealer_ofsouls 2010-03-22 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
In a stunning last-minute move, the NPC pulls a victory from nowhere!

j/k, everyone knew the result of this one; I might fic it out later if I have the time. We'll see.
