DUEL MONSTERS TOURNAMENT ♠ ROUND 1
WHO: ANYONE AND EVERYONE
WHERE: Central Park and Harbor
WHEN: Saturday March, 20th early afternoon
WARNING: Swearing and card games
SUMMARY: Round 1 of the duel monster's tournament.
FORMAT: Whatever you want!
Months of planning and recreating an empire from the ground up was finally reaching its climax. Fireworks shot into the sky as the workers ran out of the way trying to avoid the large screen to which the firework stands were attached. If there was still anyone who had not heard that a Duel Monsters Tournament was being held in the city, the sights and sounds quickly informed them.
The same set up was found in the two locations. One at the center of Central Park and the other stretched next to the water by the harbor. The rules the duelists had been given told them where to meet and when to be sure they would be there for the beginning. Since Kaiba couldn’t be in two places at once, especially as he had his own duel to prepare for, a video had been pre-recorded to start the event. The screens turned on at the same time, the KaibaCorp logo flashing across the screen. It disappears to show a montage of duels fought by different monsters. Those who are paying close attention may even notice cards that Kaiba could have only found out about in the City. The montage ends with a Blue Eyes White Dragon destroying everything in its path and causing the screen to fade to white.
The blank screen suddenly changes again to a video of Kaiba. “Welcome to this City’s first chance at a Duel Monster’s Tournament!” it started. “You have had plenty of time to prepare, and now it’s time to show exactly what you can do. At the end of this announcement the tournament will officially start.
“Find your opponent and duel! The winner will go on to the next round. The loser can go home. You have all been given copies of the rules. Any cheating will be punished.”
The Kaiba in the video paused, emphasing a big-brother idea about how cheating would be caught and punished. The look changed into a smirk as he threw his hand forward and dramatically proclaimed,
“Game Start!”
(Make your own threads here for your individual duels. You can log as much of the action as you want. Remember you need to PM me with the winner of each duel before Sunday 11pm CST (whether or not the log is finished). If I don’t have a winner I will proclaim one for you to keep things moving. In case you've forgotten the brackets are here)

Alastair vs. Kiryu
It was a gorgeous day to be dueling. Unseasonably warm, in the 70's, as it had been the last day or so. Alastair had spent much of his free time at home (in between checking up on Bakura) down in the garage, cleaning and tuning his motorcycle after its winter's nap, so it was in prime condition today. He gunned the engine and tore through the dispersing crowd, scattering newbies on his way closer to the water. He picked a good spot and screeched to a stop, the tails of his favorite gray trenchcoat swishing around him like a cloak and falling over the back of the seat. His bootleg duel disk was on his left arm, poised and ready, as he sat astride the red Ducati in wait for a worthy challenger.

Being early had it's advantages too. He could watch everyone else arrive and see just who would be around. His attention caught on Crow especially, but he wanted to save that duel for later. Let Crow worry about the possibly of facing his Earthbound God for a while. He wasn't about to tell his old friend he couldn't actually do anything with it here.
He listened to Kaiba's little speech with only passing attention. Kaiba wasn't nearly as interesting as Alastair. He watched Alastair's stunt with a faint smile and headed over, cape billowing out a bit behind him.
"Showing off?" he teased once he was close enough.

He tilted his head slightly, assessing Kiryu. For all their time together, as friends and other things, even battling beside each other, they hadn't yet actually faced each other in a serious duel. Alastair had his eyes on a bigger prize, but he wanted a challenge to get him warmed up, not some optimistic newb. "What do you think?" he offered. "Got your eye on anyone for the first round, yet?"
no subject
He smirked back at Alastair, activating his duel Disk. "Think you can satisfy me?"
no subject
He took a few steps to the side so he wasn't next to his bike, and grinned as the wind off the harbor flapped his coat around his ankles. This was going to be good, and they were both going to look good doing it, too.

He drew his first five cards and then a sixth, glancing over them. "I'll take the the first turn. I play Infernity Demon in attack mode and set two cards face down. Then I'll activate Terraforming, letting me add a field spell from my deck to my hand."
The Duel Disk pushed out one of the cards from his deck and he took it, immediately activating the tray in the disk for it. "And I'll activate Dark Zone now. All Dark monsters have their attack increased by 500 and their defense decreased by 400."
The area around them became noticeably darker, though not nearly enough to make it difficult to see. Infernity Demon's attack points ticked up to 2300.
"End turn."

He drew his card and worked quickly, already preparing his strategy. "One monster in defense, and this card face down." He slid the second one into the trap slot, but kept his poker face on as best he could. "That's all. End turn."
no subject
"My turn. Draw!"
He took his time studying the card he drew. Activating it this turn would probably be best. But first:
"Infernity Demon attacks your defense monster!"

He tried his best not to flinch and the domed cage formed around him, but he wasn't sure he succeeded. It was a useful card, but it brought back plenty of bad memories.
"Neither of us can attack until the end phase of your second turn. End turn."
no subject
He drew and ordered his cards before giving them a scowl. His favored strategies were not coming together very quickly today. "Fine, then. I'll summon UFO Turtle...in Attack mode." It was risky, but as long as the Nightmare Steel Cage was up, he could leave monsters wide open. "And this face down. That ends my turn."
no subject
Alastair wasn't the only not getting exactly the cards he was looking for. That was partially why he'd played a stall card in the first place. Kiryu looked over his card one more time. "End turn."

He chuckled a little when he draw his card. Not what he'd been waiting for, but it would do.
"I summon Infernity Guardian in attack mode. Then I'll activate Infernity Burst. You take 800 points of damage for every Infernity monster I have on the field!"

He had made that move less to get a fresh monster and more to shuffle his deck, in the hope it would improve his outlook. He plucked the card from the middle of his deck and gave it a quick shuffle before jamming it back into the slot on the duel disk, at which he slapped the monster down - too bad it had to be in Attack mode. "I summon The Thing in the Crater, for now."

"I'm activating one last card, the trap card Full Burst. It deals you 200 damage for every card I discard from my hand."
Kiryu lifted the last card in his hand and slipped it into the Graveyard, his grin just getting bigger. "End turn."
no subject
Well, that would help. He needed to work out the combo quickly. "First, I summon Invasion of Flames - in defense mode," he noted. "Gorlag gets an extra five hundred attack points for every Fire monster on the field, including itself, so it stands at 2000. And because of Invasion of Flames' effect, neither of us can use trap cards this turn." He plucked up the card he had just drawn. "Next, I activate Monster Reborn to bring back UFO Turtle." That brought the Gorlag up another 500 points. It was finally strong enough! He also flipped his last - well, first - monster into attack: Science Soldier. It just so happened to be a Dark monster, which gave it a respectable 1300 attack points. "And last, I play Stop Defense - on your Infernity Necromancer!" It was on the field, waiting for this chance. The Dark Zone gave it a few attack points, but not enough, and now it was in attack mode...
no subject
He turned Infernity Necromancer to attack mode and gestured for Alastair to go on.

"Infernity Guardian still has more attack points than your UFO Turtle right now. Even if it could be destroyed right now..."

This is what had been missing from his life.
(no subject)
oh god I forgot one of Gorlag's effects last turn - sorry!
fff that's okay.
