After the late- or was it just really early?- birthday-meeting with Matt and dad the night before, May had immediately headed home to start decorating and generally preparing for the day. This would be the second of Matt and Reilly’s birthday’s she’d be witness to. It was weird to think about. But more than that, she was determined to give this year’s a little more kick to it than the rushed surprise cake from the year before. She knew all the more now how rarely either man celebrated the day at all, let alone happily. And just in case she’d been in danger of forgetting that, Matt’s post the night before had certainly reinforced the point.

So she’d gone all out. Streamers, balloons, all the works she could manage in their small apartment, even a few frosting scented (and oh so carefully webbed by the bottom in place) candles for the birthday boy who couldn’t appreciate the sights. Along, of course, with the finest in ordered food and (non-alcoholic) drink she could manage with the pooled money from interested parties. Now it was just a matter of tricking the boys into both coming and staying long enough to enjoy themselves.

Of course, how could I forget? Superteens don't do student council. It gets in the way of the moping.

You need to have lots of experience in moping for the extracurricular part of your transcript if you want to get into a college with a decent program in Angst-ridden Superheroics.

[She has to cover her mouth to hide the laugh as she tries to keep a serious expression.]

I was wondering if superheroes had to write an extra essay on their applications. I'll keep that in mind when I start the rough drafts next month.

[She shrugged. It was an honest answer.]

I always planned on just going to ESU...but that's not really an option here.

Well, I can't disagree with that ... but NYU and Columbia aren't half bad, either, and they're still here.

[She goes back to picking things up as she thinks out loud.]

I never really...well, since getting the webs, I mean- I've just never really thought much about what I'd actually do. For a normal job. I guess that week teaching was pretty fun...

Peter was Nova's TA but I don't think he knows that

[He stuffs one last handful of trash into his bag, then starts to tie it off.]

I didn't get to teach for very long but it was one of the most rewarding things I've ever done -- even more than the Spider-Thing. Even TAing was a good experience.

[May blinks, trying to picture that. Nope. Can only see dad in his lab uniform and suit for work.]

It's a little different here too, you know? Whatever I do here...stays here. And it'd be something to be an imported Xavier graduate who came back to teach there. It's either that or go to the police academy, I think.

Yeah, you've got a point there. Still, you're being handled a giant reset button -- why not take advantage? You could study lemur biology or paleolithic basketweaving and it won't affect anything back home.

Yeah...but what if I get stuck here? For years and years, that is. I don't want to spend a whole life time on 'why nots,' even if I won't remember it back home.

Heh, I take your meaning. I guess I can hardly talk about going wild, not when I'm doing exactly what I'd have done back home if things had been different.

[She makes a small considering noise, still a bit unsure if this kind of thing was too weird to talk about or not.]

I wonder why dad didn't go do what you're doing...why he ended up in the cops instead of research.

Well, forensic science is definitely something I've thought about in the past ... and I considered applying for a job with the department here, too. Thing is, the cops being mostly imPort and all, a lot of them are way more savvy about things like secret identities -- too much of a risk.

Yeah...But it seems like half the people have secret identities around here, don't they.

Yes. It just- it doesn't make it less important. It just puts a kind of different perspective on it all, doesn't it. Seeing so many other people doing the same thing.
