Bakura's Birthday Shindig [OPEN]

WHO: Bakura, open to his roommates, everyone living on Hell Towers 10th (and 9th), their guests, all of Bakura's friends and their guests, and anyone who can con the party location out of Alastair
WHERE: Hell Towers' 10th Floor Mancave

WARNINGS: none unless Kaiba is his usual self. ;)
SUMMARY: Bakura's turning 20! Time for all the fluffballs and assholes who know and like him to party. And collect delicious random CR from each other.

The last-minute party is ready to go. Momiji had been entrusted with the decorations, the cake is coming with Maggie, and food and drink are in the process of being set out. The Mancave is still in pristine form, with arcade games and console games hooked up to the giant TV, and poor Pierre still surviving well enough in his tank. Alastair has his longest techno playlist pumping through the stereo. All they need now is the birthday boy himself!

Oh, and Vector, Alastair has a request for you. Something about space bridges, Tokyo, and January.

Maggie nodded. "He does. I know he'd been feeling down for awhile. I hope this will cheer him up."

"Who else is coming?"

"Mostly people from the floor," Alastair replied with a little shrug. "But that's because Bakura's pretty much collected a bunch of his friends so they'd all live here. Though, I think there's a few others coming, too."

He glanced behind him to make sure his adopted brother wouldn't overhear, and then leaned in conspiratorially. "I don't even know half the people he knows. The Kaiba brothers are the only people not living at Hell Towers that I'm just as familiar with." That, of course, included present company, but he wasn't worried about offending her. He didn't know Maggie; but then, he didn't have a problem being social with strangers. Alastair was not shy.

"Kaiba?" Maggie had met the elder Kaiba twice. Only the second time he had been out of his mind, but neither had been pleasant. She decided not to comment on it, except to note, "I'm glad he found his brother, then."

She changed the subject. "How did you meet Bakura?"

Alastair smirked a bit. He didn't feel like discussing Kaiba at all, so he just nodded. It was good that Kaiba had his brother, that much he could agree on.

"You know, I don't even remember anymore," he answered. "Probably just talking over the comms. I found out he was a friend of Yugi's, that meant he was from my world, so we already had that in common. Everything else just sort of grew out of there."

Belatedly, he remembered that he was supposed to be some kind of host or something. "Oh...I was gonna get a drink, you want something?"

Maggie nodded. "If it's not too much trouble. Thank you very much."

Alastair went to the fridge to fetch a hard cider for himself, but then hesitated. "Uh...we've got iced tea...some beer...a lot of beer...water?"

"Beer is fine." Maggie didn't drink much but if that's what they had the most of, then why not?

"What do you do in the City? I mean, for a living."

Alastair picked out a bottle and handed it over. He liked anything non-American, thanks to his travels in Europe prior to getting blinked into the City, so most of what he had personally gone out to get was fairly exotic.

"R and D at StarkTech," he answered easily. "Mostly programming and computer stuff. You?"

Maggie unceremoniously twisted off the top.

"Starktech? That must be interesting," she replied. Starktech seemed a bit legendary somehow. "I'm a detective. Well, I'm unemployed. But I'm trying to get a detective agency going."

"Nah, it's not really that interesting," Alastair demurred before taking a sip of his drink. "Not unless you're into computer programming, and even then it's pretty routine. Dective is way more interesting."

"Well, I imagine some programming is like detective work. Or at least data recovery, which I guess is sort of the parallel to programming," Maggie mused.

"I'd like to learn to use computers better myself. I can do basic research but that's all."

"There's a lot you don't need to know." Alastair leaned against one of the counters. "I mean, generally speaking - most people who use computers day to day don't need special training or anything. It's almost dummy-proof these days. Now, if you needed, like, hacking into people's voice mails and stuff to investigate..."

He tried not to look smug, and failed. "I suppose it would take some special lessons to learn that stuff. Or you could just hire a hacker to do it for you when you need it."

Maggie's expression changed ever so slightly, as she attempted to interpret his smirk. There was almost a sort of professional coyness.

"Mabye you're right. I'm sure if I need such a person, I'm sure I can find one when the time comes."

She took a swig of beer, reverting back to shy deadpan.

Alastair grinned. Message definitely received.

"Not that I want to discourage anyone from learning computer coding," he added nonchalantly. "I mean, hell, I bothered to get certified last year even though I know more than any classes could ever teach me. Certifications just look good on your record."

"That's true. I'm always worried about taking classes though. I have a habit of reading too much."

Alastair shrugged a little. "I only really read software manuals, so I guess it's just sort of natural for me."

Maggie replied reflexively, "But there's so much else to read." She paused, blushing, knowing not everyone heard the cries of unread books like she did. "Although, uh, software manuals are very instructive..."

Alastair smirked again; he knew full well his reading interests were lame. "I like listening better," he said, and then added, "music. That's more my thing."

"What kind of music?"

"Techno, mostly. Although some pop music and stuff." Alastair waved his drink around nonchalantly. "Thanks to my power I can listen to music in any language, so I like a lot of European and Asian stuff."

"You understand all languages? That's pretty cool. Can you speak them as well?"

"Most of them. It's like this." Alastair set his bottle down so he could gesture while he talked. "I have to hear or read the language first, and then I can respond in it. But in a place like this where we get monsters and space robots and medieval elfy guys and stuff, if it's a language humans can't speak, I can only understand it." He sniffed a bit. "Which is weird. But it doesn't happen a lot."

"You could make a lot of money as a guide. Can you read in other languages as well?"

"Yeah." It had been a while since Alastair bothered with this power, it had become so second-nature to him after more than two years. Having someone poke him about it made him excited enough to share. "I can even code and program in them. It means there's no country's systems I can't hack." He took a sip and smirked. "Also made me kind of indispensable when Stark needed me to go to the new branch in Majr."

Maggie tilted her head, deciding to test it. She spoke the next in Cantonese, with Hong Konger affectation to the language. "So you can understand this?"
