Extra notes for November:
- There will be a Thanksgiving hosted here, but I will make a separate log post for it.

"Hey there, Monster! Pull up a seat," she waved to one of the stools next to her. "Finally found my way here, on your excellent suggestion."

He sat down on the stool she had gestured to and leaned his elbows on the table.

"Yeah, they have good pie, don't they? Mmm, pie. It's almost as good as stew. almost."

"Mm, I make a killer mole rat stew myself. I have to say the pie is a little bit better though. Maybe a lot better even." She grinned.

"So what have you been up to, huh? Still looking for that guy you were talking about awhile ago?"

"I dunno if I've ever tried killer mole rat stew."

At the last question, he blinked at her. Guy? Processing, processing, processing. Ah, he got it! His entire demeanour suddenly became enthusiastic.

"O-Chul! Yeah! I haven't seen him at all. The porter lady's seems to be taking forever. But I met another paladin! Well, okay, he said he wasn't a paladin, but he talked like one. He was kinda mean though."

Most mole rats were killers so she didn't bother correcting that.

"Paladin?" Veronica frowned. "What... what does that mean where you're from? 'Cause I know some paladins, and most of them aren't nice. But... well, that's complicated."

"Yeah, this one wasn't very nice. And I know a bunch of people that don't like them, but O-Chul's a paladin and he's really nice! It's um, a type of class, y'know - like "warrior" or "cleric" or whatever."

Tsukiko had warned him about paladins. Just before he ended up in the City, actually. He remembered. On the other hand, he didn't particularly care. O-Chul was his friend regardless of being a paladin, so it was okay.

"A... class? That's not a term I've heard quite applied to that, but you mean profession or rank, right? In the Brotherhood... uh, that's the group I belong... belonged to, 'Paladin' is a rank. The higher of two military tiers, above the Knights."

"Um, something like that."

He wasn't entirely sure how to explain something that just is. And then he caught on to the rest.

"Oh, which one were you?"

"I was in the non-military order, the Scribes. The Knights and Paladins tromp around in big metal power armor and carry guns and super-sledges and have to act intimidating. Scribes gather information, keep records, and learn how to fix things. We do get some combat training, but since the Knights and Paladins hoard the big shiny weapons for themselves, we get special training in hand to hand combat. Which is my preference anyway, I much prefer punching things."

He didn't get the whole bit about power armor or guns or whatever super-sledges were, but he got the gist. Sort of.

"That sounds kind of like a monk. Or an NPC, I guess. Is that what you're gonna do when you go back home?"

"A monk..." Veronica guessed he meant something other than the way she understood the term, but wasn't sure how. She recalled monk as a term for an old world fraternal religious order who holed themselves up in remote strongholds. That sounded about right. "Well, yeah, basically, we are 'the Brotherhood', after all." She paused. "Do I even want to know what an 'NPC' is?"

She shrugged. "Anyway, I kind of left the Brotherhood. We... I didn't see eye to eye with the elder on a number of things. I tried to change things from within..." She paused, remembering she was talking to a relative child, at least cognitively speaking. "Basically, I thought the guy in charge was leading us toward bad things. I couldn't talk him out of it." She sighed, poking her empty plate with her fork.

"You quit?" He sounded rather impressed, and a bit nervous, although it wasn't like he could retroactively do something about it. "I hope they gave you a farewell cake and a nice sendoff."

"I suppose that's a... concise way of putting it. I don't feel like I quit though. That I just... went to do the stuff I really wanted to do another way."

She sucked in her cheeks. "And no. They totally forgot the cake. They should've had Watkins pop out of it with her lazy eye googling all over the place. Then they'd be sure I'd never come back."

He blinked a couple of times at her. "That sounds... really familiar." If he had bothered to think about it, he might have remembered a goblin that had expressed a similar sentiment, although his laziness combined with him not really paying attention in the first place made the whole incident slip his mind. As it was, he was left feeling vaguely unsettled.

"Oh man, I would've made you a cake. I'd be really sad if you left!"

She smiled. "Well, thanks, I'm glad to know I'd be missed. I think I'm ultimately better off. It just makes me... well, never mind."

She sipped her coffee. "So tell me more about this O-Chul guy. What made him so different?"

The Monster became more enthusiastic, instantly beaming at the name. "O-Chul's my best friend! He hung out with me and played board games and talked to me even though I was a monster. He didn't say I was an affront to nature or anything like that."

Veronica raises an eyebrow. "Did someone else tell you you were an affront to nature?"

"Um, I can't remember being called an affront to nature exactly, but I've been called lots of things."

"Well, I've been called lots of things too. Question is, who's calling you what, and does it bother you?"

"I don't really need the insults! But I don't mind some of the stuff, 'cause it's not like I have a real name."

It occurred to him, briefly, that he'd been insulted a lot less since coming to the city. Maybe humans just didn't get insulted as much as monsters did. Oh man, they got a bad rap. He was momentarily filled with a sense of injustice, before deciding that being filled with a sense of injustice was way too much energy, and quickly forgetting the thought.

"Yeah, I've been wondering about that. Do your... people usually not have names?"

"Well, I dunno if my people have names or anything, but I don't have one. I don't really know very much about what I am."

"That's got to be frustrating. So do you live with your own kind, or...?"

She paused. "I don't mean to pry. I think your and my worlds are pretty different so I'm trying to understand. Well, different in some ways at least."

"I don't really know my own kind! Right now I'm living around a bunch of humans, and before it was mostly goblins and some undead. Tsukiko's like, the only human I knew back home, other than O-Chul. But it's not so bad."

"Goblins? Goblins like.... little mischievous green creatures? Man, Monster, you live right out of Taeles of Swords and Chivalrie." She shrugged. "Though we sort of have 'undead.' Ghouls. The feral ones are scary, but the ones that keep their faculties are alright--but they didn't develop their condition of their own volition. The guys who WANT to be immortal, they're the ones you have to keep an eye on."
