SUMMARY: This is the townhall meeting, where everyone can come and show up, and wave accusations and shout to their little heart's content. They can also discuss skrull accusations in a calm manner if they really want.

[ And the large room where the City Council met was open for business. The walls were lined with seats, there were rows and rows of seats, nice lighting, and even a couple tankards of coffee open for business. Look, he wasn't a complete monster! There was security, but they remained silent and observed, instructed only to interfere if things were escalating to violence, and only then. Most of the Mayor's staff were already there before people started to arrive, and they were sitting in most of the seats reserved for the City council. There wasn't music, but it would be a good half hour to forty five minutes before the actual proceedings got started.

When they did, it was all about an open forum. ]

[ Max traded her nurses one last night of observation for being allowed to attend and got herself there. She looks normal now that she's sitting down, hoodie up. Sitting with her back firmly to the wall in the corner and constantly fiddling with the keys in her hand, she watches. ]

What do you think of all this?

[ She eyes him back in return. When she speaks, her voice is still raspy enough that it could be attributed to pneumonia and too much coughing. ]

I don't like it.

[ She sounds like she shouldn’t be out of the hospital. ]

I think it’s a joke. [ Lowering his voice. ] Anyone here could be a Skrull and they’re just gonna act on whoever accuses someone else. It’s fucking retarded. They were always gonna pull some crap like this.

[futurebatwoman]

I don't think it was well thought through.

But then, not much of the reaction has been. [ sighs, leaning against the wall to help support her. ] I was hoping for better.

[ He scoffs and shakes his head. ]

Better than what? Better than panic reactions from a bunch of officials who think the only way to deal with fear is by locking people up? This is how they work, it’s what they always do. It doesn’t matter whether the terrorists they’re dealing with have different genes, religion, or species. They deal with it by trying to look stronger and pretend like they aren't panicking. Truth is none of them were ready for this. They couldn't be. No one's ever ready for it, that's why it works.

[ And it is working, obviously. Because turning everyone against each other is exactly what'll help the Skrulls. ]

Feel a bit strongly about it, huh.

[ she crosses her arms. ] But you're right, at least somewhat.

I don't like people being locked up without a trial. Call me crazy.

I won't. I'm not thrilled about it either.

[hellionated]

That and it’s a distraction. All of us wasting time, locking up innocent people? They’ll eat this up. It’s exactly what they’ll want us to do.

It probably is. But we've been playing into their hands pretty regularly since this whole mess started, why stop now?

At least we weren't about to lock up people who could take them on.

This is all because those idiots kidnapped people and hurt them for no freaking reason. Stupid, all of it. All of them. They're the ones who need locking up.

[futurebatwoman]

It's being investigated, I hear. Pretty sure Spider-man and Batman are working on it. They might get locked up yet.

[He walks up and casually leans on the wall next to her.]

I'm surprised to see you here. They let you out?

I negotiated. Temporary release for staying overnight.

I needed to be here.

[solar_absorber]

[He gives her a disapproving look before nodding.]

Besides, I'm curious what you think about all this.

[ Almost amused. ]

What I think? [ pause, she scans the crowd. ] I don't think I like it. I asked the mayor for more clarification on how the suspects would be held and didn't get enough for my satisfaction.

[He nods.] Yeah, he seems more like the kind to evade answers than give them.

I'm doing fine now. Or. More fine. I don't know.

I just don't know whether to think Skrull or just paranoia.

Might be a bit of both for all we know. Though I definitely think it leans more towards paranoia each day.

Ha. Yeah, I guess I am.

I just wish there was some way to tell. But there isn't, and this is just a giant government-sanctioned version of what - what happened to me.

Yeah, I know. Frankly I think our time would be better spent tracking down whoever did that to you. You probably weren't the only victim.

But try telling that to the mayor. Just reminds me why I don't like politicians and their games.

I wasn't. At least four others. Possibly more, who knows. Some of them may have just died.

I like them less and less by the day.

See, this is the sort of thing we should be protecting people against. Not aliens that may or may not be among us. But paranoid bastards who take the law into their own hands.
