WHO: Charles Xavier (
oxfordian) & Daria Morgendorffer (
onmyneck)
WHERE: Xavier Institute
WHEN: Mid-day, Powers Training.
WARNINGS: None!
SUMMARY: Daria is enrolled in Charles' Powers Training class at the Institute, and Charles offers to help her discover her powers.
FORMAT: Anything goes; prose to start.
It was a part of Charles' curriculum and practise to attempt to decipher the Porter-granted skills of his students when they were brought into his class, and this new student would be no exception. While in some cases it could be entirely obvious, others were much more subdued -- after all, when a student was unaware of their own new abilities, their minds were not entirely able to divulge those secrets as it was not conscious of them either. Charles had spent quite a bit of his time perfecting the capability, though it was by no means immaculate and certainly not definitive. He would usually request for his new students to come to class about ten minutes early, to give him an open window of opportunity without having to find activities for his entire class.
It was in that ten minutes that Charles was waiting patiently at his desk for the arrival of his anticipated student. He was preparing an additional syllabus and a few of the week's assignments in advance, but lifted his head each time he heard a sound in anticipation of being as polite as possible -- even if listening for minds would have been more effective.

Part of her feels she should at least be pleasant to this guy that's supposed to be helping her with powers she was fairly sure she didn't have, but another part of her just wanted to hope that ignoring him would just make it work faster.
She knocks on the door, trying to at least not make herself look like an idiot.]

[ He's wearing an expression that betrays his appreciation that she's arrived on time. It's not entirely often that his students arrive on time when they're new -- sometimes they don't arrive at all, in which case he finds himself having to wrestle with another handful of school-hating students. It doesn't bother him entirely. Not as much as it had at first, really; now it was only something to keep him busy. Arguments with teenagers.
It did not help that he was only slightly older than them himself, but he hoped that he at least presented himself with a bit more maturity. ] Thank you for arriving on time. I suppose you're already aware that when you're brought here, you're given a sort of power?
I'm here to help you find out what that is. Ah, and learn to control it.
no subject
I think you should know that I have no idea what my power even is. If I have one, that is.
no subject
That's no surprise, really! I've run into the case often. Ah, there are quite a few students who arrive without knowledge of it -- just your presence here lets me know that, yes, you certainly must have one.
[ Charles stops messing about with his papers on his desk then and straightens up, slides a hand into his pocket. He gestures once at his temple, then he's smiling. It's almost smug, in a "young dude who probably needs to be put in his place" sort of way. ] It goes without saying that I've a power of my own. I can read minds.
--Do you mind?
no subject
Is it necessary to read my mind? I think I have a doctor's note that excludes me from it.
no subject
Well, I -- suppose not entirely, but I'm not going to be of much help without it, am I?
no subject
[She's sounding a little bit annoyed here, trying to defend herself a little.]
no subject
You're entirely right. There's a chance I can try to pick up on your abilities, just by -- rummaging about in your mind for a bit. Painless, really.

[ Charles raises his brows as though he's completely certain of this, before he turns around and retrieves the small stack of papers he's prepared. ] Instead, we can turn to this. Your syllabus.

What sort of things am I supposed to be studying here?
no subject
My course is for powers training, specifically. Even if you're unaware of the powers that you possess, it is possible through the course to attempt to discover it -- with classmates' and my own help, of course. We, ah, we work as a team to improve upon and enhance our skills. Ones that we came into the City with originally, as well as ones given to us upon entry.

[She's still flicking through the papers a bit before she looks back up at him.]
And the other classmates are people who were moved here too, I suppose.
no subject
Ah, yes. A combination of both, really. There are students who came here with skills and -- powers, as it were, -- from their own homes. As well as the ones that were given to them by the Porter.
It is a mix, really. Though I've not noticed much of a difference, between those who acquired the skills genetically and those who acquired them by other means.

[Can you feel the lack of enthusiasm oozing out of the word 'gym'?]
no subject
Yes. Ah, yes, it's something like that. But it's much more interesting than what you're used to, I can assure you of that.
no subject
As long as it doesn't involve pom-poms, I'll survive.
no subject
It most certainly does not, so I am glad for your continued existence. Now, do you have any questions? Class is going to begin soon, and I should hope to ensure you'll be on track.
no subject
I don't think so. I'd like to find out my powers before something dangerous happens, anyway.
