(it is absolutely not common that you end up in the future for your birthday. in fact, despite the discrepancy with his own age back home, cross was actually milking this for all it was worth. when he found out that people actually give you free stuff. a little charm here and a little flirting there, he's got so much free stuff that he doesn't know what to do with it.

what's more, at the moment he's just too excited to spend his birthday not wondering if someone at a party is going to try and kill him. so, throwing caution to the wind, just let the party begin! he's in various locations doing various things.)

(There was just something about the tapping of cane. Perhaps too many a time he had heard it only to be reminded of his status or the tapping of umbrella that the Earl was so fond of when he come to ruin whatever night Cross was trying to enjoy. Or foil. Regardless, it's rare that he isn't acting his usual rapscallion self and like someone of his time era.

After all, servants of God don't get to gaze upon art for so long when they have themselves to sacrifice, right?)

If I had a top hat, I'd tip it.

(Unfortunately for Shade, he was on the side of Cross's missing face and he actually had to turn to see who was tapping it.)

[ Shade didn't make mention, or even acknowledge the turn, other than a polite nod, and a tip of the top hat he actually did wear. Beat that! ]

Why yes, it's me. I suppose congratulations are in order, now that you've survived yet another year. And that is what you are celebrating, is it not?

[ Shade doesn't really care anymore about birthdays, but he's always one for something interesting, and a grown man acting like a boy is hilarious. ]

(Cross just greets the tip with the roll of his eye. Usually when people congratulate him another year living, it's because they're ignorant of what war really is.

But, he doesn't show that emotion, it's easier to have people think he was a manchild than to actually know what he was really like.)

Surviving 211 years, if we wanted to count the Porter's interference.

[foreshadower]

Aha, congratulations indeed. [ The Shade, though, smiled only a small amount for a moment, before continuing. ]

What is it without the porter's interference? Have you lived through that many years? [ A beat. ] I apologize, I'm curious.

[ioudas]

I daresay it is quite rude to ask a gentleman his true age. (he dramatically sighed as if he's been asked the most intrusive of questions.) Thirty-three, and I shall take your congratulations.

(There was a quick once over, trying to gauge how old Shade was, though futile as it was. Coming from a place where no one looks their age, it was quite the habit to drop.)

[ The Shade didn't laugh, but there was certainly an air of amusement lurking somewhere there, a quirk of his lips, or the way his eyes crinkled slightly. ]

I daresay that two hundred and eleven years certainly sounds more impressive! I can hardly fault you for using that.

[ioudas]

(oh dear, this was going to be a very taxing conversation, wasn't it? cross makes a small sneer before turning his attention back to the artwork.)

I've found age to be irrelevant in dealings.

[foreshadower]

Does it? [ He hooks his cane in the crook of his elbow, reaching up with a gloved hand to stroke at his chin while he looked over the painting. ]

There does become a point where it seems of less import to count the years, doesn't there?

[ioudas]

You tend to stop jinxing yourself. (A small quirk of his lips, as if aching for a cigarette.)

The longer you live tends to taunt God.

[foreshadower]

For the average man, yes, I suppose he wouldn't want to taunt God. [ Shade watches Cross for a moment, before looking down toward the next painting, beginning to head there at a lazy saunter. ]

Perhaps there are those that even God does not wish to meddle with.

[ioudas]

Maybe, back when I believed in him.

(why he follows him, cross has no idea. but they move onto the next painting and Cross stares at it, but not at it.)

Even if he did exist, what use would he have for us?

[foreshadower]

[ Shade does look at the painting, and really examines it, but all the while, he continues to speak. ]

The foil, perhaps. Or perhaps he does not have a use at all. We merely exist on his Earth, and shall exist even when he is long gone.

[ioudas]

(for once, cross is pensive rather than interjecting with his opinion. they're his soldiers, aren't they? they're dying for his sake.)

The Vatican would say otherwise.
