There was nothing quite like a night on the town. The bright lights on the streets so far below, the wind through her hair as she swung between buildings, the sounds of late-night-early-morning traffic , and the ocassional girly screams of would-be muggers having their arms twisted by a chick in a black and purple cape.

Yes, this was the life. One of them, anyway.

He tries to keep his face neutral at that comment and isn't entirely successful. It ruffles his feathers.

"Someone named Stephanie Brown, yeah," he says. He's sorry as soon as the words are out of his mouth, but he still half means it.

"Or maybe I was just curious."

"I'm sure Miss Brown can take of herself." She tries not to take that too hard. At least he's not worried she's going to get someone else killed, and she can understand people being worried about her. She worries about her sometimes. At least it means he still cares.

"Curious about what?"

"Yeah," he says, "you're</> sure."

He isn't. He never quite has been, although how much of that feeling NOW is related to his own sense of guilt about things with her, and how much is genuine concern, is anyone's guess. Even he wouldn't be able to say.

Wow, he sure hasn't turned this around at all, has he?

He shrugs. "Just about you. I don't know you. At least, I don't know that I know you."

There's a lot of implication there. He means he doesn't know if they're even from the same place, or how long she's been here, or...if he can trust her. But he can't figure out how to just ASK either. He's never been good at that kind of thing.

"Sometimes I think I don't know you either, but I don't think varying timelines is the only reason for that." It comes out a little harsher than she intended, but it's true. They've both changed. Maybe it's time to get reacquainted.

"You said you were proud of me," she reminds him, half thinking she'll just be telling him. "Does that ring any bells?" If not... well, then they have a lot more catching up to do.

"No. It's not."

He agrees, and if her words cut him, he doesn't show it. It's his own fault they came to this, in a lot of ways. Although it's hers, too, and...Bruce's. Batman's. He doesn't blame Batman for everything - hell, not for half the things he should - but some of what went wrong with him and Stephanie is either directly or indirectly Bruce's fault. Tim has a good memory for things like that.

"I am proud of you," he says, almost automatically.

She can't help but smile a bit at that. It was a nice change of pace, and it meant a lot coming from him. Still, it didn't tell her much whether he remembered or not.

"You know you didn't answer the question."

"I remember," he said, anyway, though he didn't feel like it. He was afraid it wasn't going to make things any less awkward.

"Well there you go," she declared. "If we aren't from the same world we're pretty close." And that was good enough, really. They didn't have to run through the whole timeline for her to decide she trusted him. He had the same cute little frown.

"So were you planning to follow me the whole night or do you want to patrol together?" Like mature adults, she managed to stop herself from adding. They didn't need to open up that barrel of fish. Whatever was left between them was better off shoved into a corner of her mind and forgotten.
