It's the most wonderful time of the year. The sun is shining, the mosquitoes are biting, and it's time to think about what the hell you're doing to do with your life now that the summer is winding down. Which is probably why you've ended up at the City Hall sponsored First Semi-Annual Job Fair Spectacular.

The small park has been pretty much taken over by this event. Tables for each company/group that signed up are in rows with either a representative to speak with or a held down stack of promotional materials for any interested parties to pick up. Good luck, job hunters.

A few. It isn't booming, but I can understand that the job isn't so glamorous. Even the police force sounds more impressive than City Hall security detail.

[ His smile remains, still a little embarrassed, but resigned. ]

[ He inclines his shoulders slowly. ]

I suppose so. Besides -- who knows how many out there are even qualified. We can learn on our feet with what I do, but you at least need people who can operate a firearm.

[ He nods a little absently. ]

I think most people are more interested in ignoring their problems than solving them, these days.

[ He knits his fingers together anxiously. ]

Since January. I've been working the same job nearly as long, though I can't say I'll be doing it forever.

Oh, I'm not sure. I used to do consulting before I retired. Maybe something like that again.

Security. And military, on occasion -- I used to be a Marine, so I've got a wealth of knowledge to share.

[ He begrudgingly goes a little red, both pleased and flustered by the flattery, and nods proudly. ]

Yes, well, if I have to work again I may as well make myself useful. At least then it doesn't feel like a waste of time.

Right. I don't usually like a distraction but sometimes you find them necessary. Uh, to relax. Around here.

[ He pauses, then shrugs his shoulders. ]

Mostly working. But if you get lucky you'll also have good company to spend your time with.

[ He raises his eyebrow briefly, before contemplating. He's a little wary. ]

Ah -- no, it's all right. I'll get some later when my shift here is over. Thank you, though. I'm fine. [ He smiles faintly and nods his head. ] It was nice meeting you.
